Plan Baton Rouge

Sorry but I don't see what is actually better about this, never did. Seems like they could have done much better with the design and open up the Old State Capitol grounds into the park and add some of the features like chairs, tables, and outlets like North Blvd but to a smaller scale. Otherwise I see people using it for a couple months because its new and then not much after, being a waste of money in the long run. Only thing they are adding is greenspace and a new fountain..

A Jackson Square type of park would have been better, IMO.

Not sure how much I like them getting rid of the main fountain...but overall looks like an improvement for BR's Living Room

Construction begins on Repentance Park

Less than two months after the $7.2 million North Boulevard Town Square was opened downtown, construction is under way on a companion project, Repentance Park, with completion expected in late summer, says the Downtown Development District. Part of the Riverfront Master Plan, the $3.5 million project is being paid for with state sales tax rebates, the DDD says. It is designed to increase foot traffic through downtown and improve connectivity between the Governmental Building area, the Baton Rouge River Center, the North Boulevard Town Square, and the museums, shops and restaurants near the Shaw Center for the Arts and along River Road and Third Street. The project features ADA compliant accesses at North Boulevard Town Square, the Old State Capitol Grounds and the Shaw Center, by way of a pedestrian promenade along St. Phillip Street. One of the project's features is a gradually sloped lawn down to River Road, which will create an amphitheater type space for concerts and other events. A lit pathway descending along the southern edge of the site will have benches oriented toward the Old State Capitol grounds. A portion of the existing wall at City Hall Plaza will also be removed, encouraging foot traffic west into a grove of shade trees that pushes out onto the highest terrace of Repentance Park. The design team includes Reed Hildebrand Associates, Reich Associates, Trahan Architects, Suzanne Turner Associates, ABMB Engineers, Craul Land Scientists and LAM Partners. Arrighi Construction is the contractor. A number of renderings are included in a 17-page design presentation of the project, which you can check out here.

Metro Council to take up Municipal Dock work Wednesday

Engineers have five weeks to get the downtown Municipal Dock ready for the return of cruise ships to Baton Rouge. Beginning April 19, four new vessels—two paddle wheelers and two small cruise ships—will make regular stops in downtown Baton Rouge as they cruise up and down the Mississippi. "This is a whole new economic engine to come to town," says Downtown Development District Executive Director Davis Rhorer, who got an update on the progress of the dock work at this morning's monthly DDD meeting. "These companies are also bringing a tour bus, so when the boats disembark, the buses will bring the passengers around the city to various sites." Rhorer says he's confident the work on the dock, which includes painting, minor repairs and improved lighting, will be done when the first of the season's 25 vessels docks next month. The Metro Council is expected to vote on the engineering contract for the repairs, which are being done in phases and total about $900,000, at its regular meeting Wednesday. The council meets at 4 p.m. on the third floor of the Governmental Building, 222 St. Louis St. See the council's full agenda here

That can't be right. That's in even worse shape than what the article tries to explain.

Remember the Trahan proposal?

Same Municiple Dock.

I've been on it plenty of times, it's foundation is probably sound, only thing that's there is the steel frame ontop of the concrete slab.

Instead of half assing this in a few weeks deadline I'd much rather them do it right the first time. They need to instal a concrete walkway from the steps to the road, right? And there needs to be a new shoulder built for busses, right?

There are no steps there currently, you have to walk up the levee or up the bike path. A new shoulder will be built unless they use the parking under the bridge. With that area, more than just a month is needed to make it proper but from the sounds of it it might be a low-budget company that only requires a cheap outdoor dock.

This is confusing...in this mornings Advocate they refered to the landing w the "paper-clips" which would be BR Landing or City Dock as they say; across from the RiverCenter next to the LASM; not the old Muinicipal Dock just south of the Bridge. Hopefully the $909,000 to revamp it will be worth it.

It's in this article that talks about downtown murals....

I hope it's the one downtown and not that rusted garbage by LSU. What a ugly way to say hi to people getting off a paddle wheel boat

Wow.

Paperclips is a horrible spot honestly. That pier should be for the public, that area doesn't need commerce like the Municople Dock and Catfish Town do. After some work it can look like the same ones Hollywood and the Belle have. You know after investment and construction, dilapidated proporties can add value to the neighborhood. (Capitol House, LASM, Hotel Indigo, etc)

I understand but atleast the dock downtown by the Kidd is downtown and has restaurant/casinos/hotels/etc. The one by LSU is on a levee behind a run down state property storage warehouse. Which do you want a visitors first impression to be? For me I would hope it's downtown.

I see. Honestly the cruise terminal/dock isn't what I'd want to see there anyway. Neither are ideal locations.
