New Orleans Theater District

The Morris F.X. Municipal Auditorium(7,000), Mahaila Jackson Theater of Performing Arts(2,317), The Orpheum Theater(1,700), and The Seanger Theater(2,794) still sadly remain closed more than a year after hurricane katrina swamped the venues. With all four venues out of service the Louisiana Philharmonica Orchestra along with the New Orleans Opera were left homeless.

The Orpheum was purchased by a Texas Based company which is continuing the renevation after the theater was swamped. So far the remaing venues will be closed indefinitley. Many wonder how long will the city be deprived of the performing arts and theartical performances.

I think those theaters are going to be torn down and then rebuilt, better than ever. Otherwise, they would be up and running by now.

Keep us updated, I'll keep my eyes open. I do live in BR. Not too many cities have their own Theatre District; so I think it's very important for all of them to thrive again. I really hope everything comes around and works out, like Uptown said "better than ever".

I really hope some of these reopen. I only got to go to the Saenger once before the storm. It was beautiful inside with the Roman looking sculptures. A very classy theater for the city.

I was taking a standardized test and it had a story about gas lighting and if it was true New Orleans was on of the first cities in the U.S. to use gas lighting. It was used in the theaters and the ones who used it were considered high-end because of the superiority of gas lighting over other means such as fire.

I think joy is going to be renovated to fit into the canal street vision plan.

Good news for New Orleans and the state of Louisiana "Broadway South" passed the senate, it's on it's way to the House. New Orleans is the perfect place for "Broadway South." There are no theaters showing major broadway productions between Houston and Birmingham and Memphis. We're talking about millions of people that live within driving distance of New Orleans who don't live near a city with major broadway shows. Given that New Orleans is the arts center of the South, it is natural for it to have a great theater district. New Orleans should focus more on pursuing this because it fits in perfectly with what the city is instead of trying to make it into something the city isn't.
