I have to admit that I am not surprised at the results from yesterday nationwide. However I do think that people were mostly voting against Bush and the war. I wish the Dems would come up with a platform that involved something besides discontent with Republicans. the only two times since WWII that the Dems have had success like yesterday was yesterday (obviously) and in 1974 in the wake of Watergate. Personally I don't think history has been kind to that Congress or to the Carter administration, so I hope the dems have something better going on now.

I hope these guys have a better plan.

I also think it's time for the moderates to form their own party and leave behind the donkey and elephant. Chafee lost almost exclusively because of the R next to his name on the ballot. It had very little to do with his personal record.

That's what I'm talking about.

What pissed me off after yesterday, is that the only ballot question to get rejected is the one for Fort Adams State Park. What is the point of rejecting that? If everyone else voted for the Zoo, recreation facilities, etc, why not Fort Adams? It's a big tourist draw, with the jazz and folk festivals for starters.

Well at least the casino got rejected, I do not think that it would have been good in the long run for the state of Rhode Island, especially the way they were going about it...

Those key issues would be fine since they are pretty high visibility and could help them with the executive branch in two years. And of course they also align with the whitehouse on immigration issues.

I would like a party (that isn't quite as radical as libertarians) whose platform involves smaller government intrusion in our lives. Dems want to make the poor feel better at the expense of the rich but since this countermands our economy the results are typically disastrous. Republicans want to spend less and help noone but also want to tell us what to do every minute of our lives.

Maybe it is time to move to Canada

democrats know that to help people you need to raise taxes and cut spending elsewhere (like a couple hundred billion on a war that's just a losing battle). republicans don't want to help anyone but themselves and make it seem like they help everyone by cutting taxes, but spend like crazy on unnecessary things (like said war).

Totally agreed. If the voters are willing to give money to improve a big attraction upstate, why are they unwilling to give money to improve a big attraction downstate?

This is like insisting that visitors to the zoo pay for $11 million worth of improvements, which is more than unrealistic. As private events with dwindling attendance that pay a fee to the state for using the park, the Folk & Jazz Festivals don't produce enough money to fund the $4 million price tag of park improvements. Fort Adams is a state park open for free to all residents; we all have a stake in its upkeep.

Keith Stokes, of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, put it best on RI Future:

disagree all you want, but RWP is not owned by the state which is why it is called a "city asset." It is the city's responsibility, it is on the city's books. Fort Adams is a state park. It is a "state asset" as it is on the states books, and is the state's responsibility.

I don't like having to vote on these bond issues, I'm no econimist and don't understand the state's budget, that is what I elect and pay the General Assembly to do.

How do these things even get on the ballot? If supporting Fort Adams were so damn important, where were the vote yes people before the election?

It gets to the point when reading through the ballot that there are hundreds of millions of dollars in bonds that I'm being asked to approve, can we afford all these bonds? At some point I'm going to vote no, and it may come down to a coin toss, which is why I pay the General Assembly to actually figure these things out.

I voted no on Fort Adams because I figure out of all the bonds I was being asked to approve, that Fort Adams was in pretty good shape as is, and could wait until next time, or get funding somewhere else, or come up with a plan where less money was needed.

i wish it would snow.
