Throwback Thursday to 2009 when a proposal for Nashville Medical Mart was announced as a concept for the site of the old convention center. Plans for this fell through (largely due to a competing proposed similar project in Cleveland) and the site is now home to the successful Fifth+Broadway center.

Medical Mart? Wow, the "excitement!" lol

So glad this didn't move forward. Too incredible of a spot for a few healthcare offices.

The plan was that the medical mart would have had permanent showrooms for medical equipment and supplies, with space for trade shows/convention gatherings catering to the medical industry. An office tower was included in the proposal. At a time before Broadway tourism had exploded, it was a legit option for taking that property back toward a business/professional focus, enhancing Nashville’s emerging status as a giant in the health care field. With hindsight, Fifth+Broad is the better option, because the medical mart and bachelorettes/party wagons are certainly not the ideal mix.

I just googled for an update on the Cleveland Medical Mart, since that city won the three way race with Nashville and NYC to develop such a medical business innovation. Well, it seems it was a race to the bottom and their med mart is being dissolved into being just an expansion of exhibit space for their city’s convention center.

A few items about the CMM. Not a rosy future for the venture it seems. I am glad they won, and we got what we got.

This was Lower Boadway in Nashville in the past compared to what is here today. I remember it wasn't a place to bring your family it was full of adult bookstores. The city cleaned all of this out decades ago
