I am just having a hard time putting my mind on billions. One billion is a ton. Hell, $500 million is a ton when it comes to development.

A few things about why a large corporation would possibly like to move here.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - as well as price. Smack in the middle of Detroit and Chicago, this is an ideal location for a major company with global needs. However, even then, a multi billion facility and 10,000 jobs would be insane. Think of what else this would spur in the vicinity and region. GR is already the top local for most tooling and die work done for the auto industry and it is beating on the East side heartilty in these sectors.

On a side note, there is one organization in town with enough cash to spend $2 billion outright - the VAI. While this is most likely not tied to them - it would be possible.

What he does know about the project, specifically the investment it may bring, suggests it's worthy of all the buzz.

"All I know is that it's in the billions of dollars. So it's a substantial amount of money," says Langlois.

To me, that doesnt mean its a billion dollar project.

And I agree with Jeff, I dont think it will have a casino.

Just sayin'

You know, the more I talk with people who are supposedly "plugged in" -- even though they will not reveal what they know -- I believe this project is going to literally shock us all by its sheer impact on the region. Either that or there's a whole lot of bulls....t going on here and I don't think these people would put their reputations on the line for nothing.

I'm going with it's going to be huge and a huge impact for this area based on coversations and some serious digging i've done today... I just hope i'm not on vacation in mexico when it gets announced :P

You guys are so obsessed with tall towers that you can't see the forest for the.....tall towers. Whatever this is will have MUCH bigger ramifications than simply adding to the skyline.

Here are some more thoughts:

edit: never mind

Will it even consist of significant height? I dont know about this. I dont think any significant height is permitted in this area in the Zoning ordinance unless a lot of rezoning takes place. Nor is this property part of the DDA, and I don't think the TIF authority applies either.

But it could be a GREAT catalyst for further development.

Boy, I feel like such a buzz-kill here :(

 allbusiness, you know what has been the most shocking to me over the past two days. It is the unbelievable power of this site. Somehow, some way, some of the most innovative, influential and entreprenurial people in this area (maybe in the State) have made their way to this website. They may not post very often (or at all), but they're here. And they can't stand keeping their mouths shut because this is SO huge and it will mean SO much to this area. I don't know how close they are to a deal, but just the news coverage alone will be quite a sight to see.

All I have to say is that from what I understand, all the answers to this project lie within the walls of this forum. You need not look any further than our discussions here. I'm still looking, but I know I'm getting very close.

I know, kinda sounds like the Matrix

there was a small article in yesterday's gr press stating that if amway were willing to add more commuter lines that berrian county could become a chicago suburb.

with such a large investment, could there be a high speed rail depot as a central hub in this location from chicago to grand rapids ? its quite a stretch from the press article, however i hope any angle of this investment includes rail as it aids in the city's longterm viability & growth

We're not nearly making it a BIG enough deal...

big enough deal...

what about the burj dubai relocated in grand rapids, i mean you could see it on 131 coming north all the way from kzoo and south from rockford. that would be big, and gr would be on the international map in a second. plus it fits the timeline of construction. i mean, why not shoot for the stars and have the world's tallest in gr michigan.

here's a billion dollar investment in the city of seattle, parts of this project include an ubran village, streetcars, and a biotech hub.

here is a 26 billion saudi arabian plan to build a whole new city.

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/12/20/0...2.rfmm4n2n.html

overall, you can do a lot with a billion dollar investment, when the land itself will account for less then 10% of that cost.

You guys have got to get off the height thing. You're not thinking BIG enough as far as IMPACT, SPLASH, SHOCKWAVE, RAMIFICATIONS.

I agree. All that land is not for one big tower. I drove down through there today. Whomever is doing this has big plans for the whole site. The term used earlier in some of the articles was a project of "national significance".

What does that mean? To me it means whatever this is, it is going to put GR on the map......for good.

I apologize if someone else already mentioned this. It has been a long day....
