The Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival will be held this Saturday, July 31st from 8AM until 4:30PM on The James River at Rocketts Landing.

It features 40-foot human-powered canoes decorated with ornate Chinese dragon heads sculling up and down the river.

I can't find out much about this event, but I believe it's a first for Richmond.

And it's FREE.

Sounds like fun to me. If you need a pick-up whilst at Rocketts Landing slip intoTHE BOATHOUSE bar on its upper deck for a nip and stay for dinner.

I was at the canal today and it looks like they are 3/4 of the way done draining it (seems that they do that yearly now when the river is low in an effort to yank all of the grass out of it I guess). I don't see how it can be ready for the duck race.

My guess is the draining process is slow, requiring vacuum pumps and lots of time. Refilling it is probably a simple matter of opening the gate and letting river do its thing. Probably only takes a matter of hours to fill again.

"Getting down and dirty"

"Want to get down and dirty with 1,500 of your closest friends? On Saturday, Aug. 7, the Chesterfield Parks and Recreation Department and the Richmond Sports Backers are hosting the Second Annual Henricus Dauber Dash, a five-mile mud run through Henricus Historical Park. This messy race is not only a fun way to get some exercise and exfoliate your skin, but also provides a chance to showcase one of the county’s most historic and scenic attractions."

Yesterday was full of events in and near downtown Richmond.

There was a duck race launched from Brown's Island into a very shallow Haxall Canal. Also, the Dragon Boat races took place in the James at Rocketts Landing.

You can check out videos of both events in the videos accompanying this story from today's RTD:

11,000 Purple Martins swooped down to roost in Bradford Pear Trees north of The Farmers Market in Shockoe Bottom last night. And while not that many humans turned out to watch, there was a goodly number of bird watchers and folks out for a good time.

Hey, here's a fun idea for tonight::thumbsup:

Take the "Eerie Night's Ghost Tour of Richmond" at 6PM from the north end of The 17th Street Farmers Market -- cost: $10 to $13. It ends at 7:30PM, then have a nice dinner at LULU's, or HAVANA 59, or JULEP's or elsewhere and be on hand for the roosting of the Purple martins around 8:30PM.

The Carytown Watermelon Festival is this weekend August 8, 2010!

Imagine...115,000 people, over 2500 watermelons and you! With 80 musicians, over 100 exhibitors, one of the largest kids areas of any festival on the east coast and all of the great Carytown style, the Carytown Watermelon Festival has become the largest one day festival in the state of Virginia.

Saturday and Sunday, August 14th and 15th, a new musical event called Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont will launch what it hopes will be an annual event.

Chaka Khan and Chuck Mangione will be two of the featured attractions.

For more, see:

http://www.jazzatmaymont.com

Melissa Ruggieri has borrowed Karri Peifer's Richmond dot com plaint of "Why Richmond, Why?" Only, Melissa's query relates to the upcoming Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont.

The hilly Maymont Estate with limited performance space seems an odd choice for such an event, IMO -- especially in the blistering heat of August. The Landmark Theatre, Siegel Center or Coliseum might attract more concert-goers who would also enjoy cooling off while listening to jazz.

The Carytown Watermelon Festival is this weekend August 8, 2010!

Here's another reminder of Sunday's Watermelon Festival in Carytown.

If as many people who attended last year show up and are willing to part with an extra dollar, it can go toward restoration of the Byrd Theatre which is in dire straits. 100,000 people times $1 equals one hundred thousand grand. :tough:

I think the church that holds services in the theatre on Sundays is spearheading the collection. Look for one of the congregation and verify that your donation is going to the Byrd.

Virginia Commonwealth University has at least four performing arts venues on its Academic campus.

The Singleton Center on Park Avenue at Harrison Street houses the 500-seat Vlahcevic Concert Hall and the Raymond Hodges Theatre with more than 250 seats.

Shaffer Street Playhouse between West Franklin Street and Park Avenue can accommodate about 100 in various configurations. (When I was a student there in the 1940's, Shaffer Street Playhouse was the only performance venue that could accommodate more than 50 people.)

The newest is The Grace Street Theatre on the street of that name between Shaffer and Harrison Streets. Formerly known as The Lee Theatre, it was converted from a 500-seat second-run movie house to an intimate hall of 250 tiered seats and an expanded stage that is used primarily by VCU's Dance Department.

VCU's very active Music Department operates out of a renovated church on the Fan District triangle formed by Harrison Street to the west, Shaffer Street to the east, Park and Grove Avenues to the north and south, respectively.

Vlahcevic Hall at The Singleton Center is the site of the annual Mary Ann Rennolds Chamber Music series. More than 75% of its seats sell out before the first concert.

Here is the upcoming Chamber Music Schedule and ticket price scale from today's RTD:

http://www2.timesdis...08g1-ar-413170/

It is to be noted that The University of Richmond also has a very active performance program in the three facilities known as The Modlin Center for the Arts on its beautiful suburban campus.

The inaugeral Richmond Jazz Festival ended yesterday at Maymont Park and drew considerably more attendees than anticipated -- about 8,000 on Saturday and an estimated 3,000 on a less than sunny Sunday.

Did anyone go to see/hear Garrison Keillor and The Prairie Home Companion show Friday night at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens?

Keillor, whatever one may think about his kind of humor, is an entertainer of significant prominence. It amazes me that the show received such minimal print publicity. Unlike newspapers in some other cities The Times Dispatch is not generous about assigning staff writers to review musical concerts at local venues. Melissa Ruggierri does a masterful job of covering the local music scene but she can't be everywhere at once. The RTD, Richmond dot com, Style Weekly and local blogs should provide more entertainment coverage, IMO.

But then again, since I'm not in Richmond, maybe Friday evening's Prairie Home Companion was cancelled due to rain or some other circumstance.

Look at this forecast for the rest of today, Friday, September 3rd!

Nothing but sunshine and/or partly cloudy skys in Richmond while we in the northeast (NYCity and environs) anticipate a wet evening.

Of course, it's a holiday weekend, but for those remaining in town tonight is September's FIRST FRIDAY.

If you have tickets to see Cedric, The Entertainer tonight at The Landmark Theatre, the show has been postponed. No reason is given for the cancellation, but a new date of November 13th has been set.
