Major cities covet the annual French Film Festival that is held every spring in Richmond. This year's dates are Thursday, March 24th through Sunday, March 27th, 2011.

Organized and presented at Richmond's Byrd Theatre, the event is sponsored by Virginia Commonwealth University in collaboration with The University of Richmond and is recognized by the French Government as the largest festival in America honoring the French film industry.

Two blocks from Carytown's Byrd Theatre is The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts which is currently exhibiting the Picasso collection through May 15th. It is on loan from Musee National Picasso in Paris. Richmond is one of only seven world cities selected for the exhibition. Others have been Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Seattle. Following Richmond, the collection moves to San Francisco and Sydney before returning to Paris. Reservations are "de rigueur."

There are many excellent dining options in Carytown including two 4-star French restaurants -- CAN CAN BRASSERIE and AMOUR WINE BISTRO.

Screenings at The Byrd during the festival generally sell out.

Here is a chance to get inside the Central National Bank towner, as this event has recently shown up on Facebook.

Time: Friday, April 8 · 5:00pm - 10:00pm

Location: 219 East Broad St. Richmond, VA 23241

Created ByJohn Dombroski

More Info: The VACANCY Project invites the public (and local government officials) into Richmond's vacant Central National Bank to experience a series of light and sound installations through the building's interior. The project hopes to creatively address and affect issues of building vacancy in Richmond by observing the history of the Central National Bank and its current state of decay and disuse. Lighting design in the space is composed with respect to the building's architectural features, history, and deterioration. The project's sound design is composed of natural audio recorded at the Bank in 2011, and of local popular music recorded in Richmond in 1929.

Once Richmond's tallest building, the twenty three story Central National Bank stood as a testament to Richmond's economic strength during America's Depression. Built in 1929 to provide needed office space and draw new businesses to the heart of the city, it became the pulse of a bustling Virginia economy.

Times changed and the city shifted. The skyscraper now stands vacant (along with 2,400 other structures), with rich history and potential, visible to nearly all of Richmond.

The VACANCY Project is a collaboration between sculptor Joshua Bennett and sound artist John Dombroski, undergraduate students who received a research grant from the VCU School of the Arts supporting the project.

WOW! I'd really like to see (and hear) this. The cavernous bank lobby is like a cathedral, especially when bathed in artful lighting. Pity it's not scheduled on First Friday, April 1st. I wish it were also presented the week of April 11th when I'll be in Richmond.

May 6th is FIRST FRIDAY ART WALK in downtown's Gallery District. And the indubitable highlight will be 25+ nude body-painted live models of both sexes at Gallery 5.:shades: The last time the Gallery presented a similar exhibit more than 5,000 people lined up along West Marshall Street. They were entertained by flame eaters, buskers and entertainers of other stripes while awaiting entry.

GALLERY 5 is in the oldest fire house building in Virginia and is located at the intersection of West Marshall Street, North Jefferson Street and Brook Road across from Ram Cat Alley Apartments. For visual reference, The Empire Theatre and Milk Bottle Apartment building are nearby.

Here's more info from Greater Jackson Ward News:

http://www.gjwn.net/...drawers-meetup/

PS: Among other restaurants nearby, take note that MARSHALL STREET CAFE AND JAZZ CLUB has reopened at the corner of West Marshall and Adams Streets (about half-a-block from GALLERY 5.) The restaurant has been totally rebuilt after being demolished about a year ago when an automobile smashed into it.

There's lots going on downtown Friday night. In addition to the monthly Art Walk featuring the "disrobed" attraction described in the above posting, there is plenty of art to see at numerous galleries. If the weather is good, there will be thousands of art lovers and carousers along the Gallery District sidewalks.

And don't forget, you can kick it off with a visit to Brown's Island for a 6:30PM concert by CARBON LEAF at Friday Cheers. Here's a youtube of the band playing recently at The National:

Some tickets are still available at The National for SLEIGH BELLS/CSS (http://www.thenationalva.com) where doors open at 7:30PM for the 8:30 show.

It would be wise to secure dinner reservations at your restaurant of choice.

And why not top it off with a whirl around the large dance floor at http://www.offthehookahva.ning.com/ which is open til 2AM.at The Lady Bird/Hat Factory building on the canal in Shockoe Slip? But you might want to call ahead on your cell to see if you can get in since the place is so popular. If not, there are many other club options in The Slip and Bottom.

Yesterday was the opening of Dominion Riverrock Festival on Brown's Island along downtown Richmond's riverfront.

The weather looked a bit threatening, but big crowds enjoyed activities.

Click the video and related stories for today's (Saturday) programming. Looks like a lot of fun

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 21st) will be a big day at Colonial Downs in New Kent County. Four steeplechase races over hurdles and one on the flat will be featured at the 79th annual running of The Strawberry Hill Race.

And, I have read that this will be the first Strawberry Hill event where pari-mutual betting will be allowed.

So, place your bets, folks. Action begins at 11AM and ends at 8PM.

Here's the website with all necessary information:

It seems to be a well-kept seceret, but guess who's in town?

Elliott Yamin, that's who!

And he'll be appearing tomorrow (Saturday, June 4th) between noon and 8PM on Brown's Island in THE STONE SOUL FEST.

Elliott is very popular after his appearances on American Idol a few years ago. He's a Richmond native and every time he returns to the city he draws thousands of people (remember when he filled up The Diamond with 12,000 admirers)?

Venture Richmond sent out one of its notices announcing the show and if I could post it here I would. Unfortunately, it doesn't transfer.

I bet it is being well-publicized on radio.

THE STONE SOUL FEST will also feature performers such as Rick Ross, Lil Mo, Plunky & Oneness and Jagged Edge.

PS: I found the website:

Last summer was the inaugural year of The Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont. While it did reasonably well, it was not profitable. However, organizers have decidecd to try again this year with a larger and costlier festival.

It will be held at Maymont on August 13th and 14th with two warm-up musical events preceding it . A sponsor kick-off will be held at Richmond CenterStage (presumably in The Carpenter Theatre) on August 12th and a concert by local artists called "Homegrown at the Hipp" on August 11th.

We've been waiting for an opening announcement about programing at the newly renovated Hippodrome. Will this prelude to the Maymont Jazz Festival be it?
