Fireworks will be lighting up the sky over Richmond to celebrate the 4th of July -- except that the BIG show will be on Belle Island Sunday, July 3rd.

The Grucci Company, which is the producer of the really big shows across the country, are staging the downtown event. There will be live entertainment and musical accompaniment. While Belle Island is the main staging site, the finale will be a huge burst off of the roadbed of Lee Bridge.

LEGENDS BREWERY would be a fine spot from which to watch the show, but I bet a quarter it is sold out. What could be better viewing sites than the hills of Tredegar, or anywhere on Browns Island...especially the pier extending into the James River? :w00t:

Remember, the downtown fireworks display is SUNDAY JULY 3rd. Blast off is after 9PM

There are a few changes in this month's First Friday.

For one thing, it will start an hour earlier at 5PM and end at 9PM tomorrow.

From today's Richmond dot com:

The Empire Theatre on West Broad between Adams and Jefferson Streets is dead center of First Friday activities.

The Broadway musical comedy called DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS is playing there and is getting great reviews.

The fire works display over the James River in Downtown Richmond Sunday night was spectacular, and is said to have been the largest fireworks show in all of Virginia.

I saw the Macy's show last night over the Hudson River from a friend's apartment on a high floor about 3 blocks from the river. The fire works were blasted off of barges in the Hudson. Our view was hemmed in by New York City skyscrapers, but it was quite a show.

Still, the one in Richmond was right up there with Macy's.

Here are views of the Richmond show from yesterday's RTD:

They should follow the success of ice-skating rink from last winter and place an outdoor roller-skating rink on the lot. Or perhaps some outdoor bowling lanes. Or maybe project a movie on the blank side of the CenterStage building.

Sorry...I'm just brainstorming in text form. :silly:

I got to participate in the dragon boat race last saturday and had a great time. There was quite a scene along the tracks heading east, and the boathouse deck was the perfect spot to cool off and watch the spectacle - and the Conch Republic was a great place to have a few cold ones after the practices we got to do earlier in the week, though I have to admit the beer was better thasn their food. I think this is a great tradition for Richmond, really takes advantage of our natural resources - I think this could really grow.\

I also got to see (from the river) the ruins of what I assume was the old Yeungling brewery (out front of the west side of the eastern larger building). I heard some history about this building and hope they do something interesting with it ounce they finally get that portion of the capital trail done

Tomorrow night's First Friday Art Walk will start and end an hour earlier than in the past.

A new feature intended to involve youngsters is unofficially called "Teen First Friday" and will take place about six blocks east of The Gallery District on the lot adjacent to Richmond CenterStage at 6th and East Broad Streets.

Click on the highlighted story in the body of this Richmond dot com article for details:

http://www2.richmond.com/entertainment/2011/aug/04/first-fridays-prepares-august-event-and-crowds-ar-1215934/

While DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS will be on stage (in its final week) at The Empire Theatre in The Gallery District, no shows are booked indoors tomorrow night at Richmond CenterStage facilities nor at the nearby National Theatre and Richmond Coliseum.

About a month before The National Folk Festival there will be a big fireworks show similar to the one that drew thousands to Browns Island and surroundings on July 4th weekend.

BUT, this one, scheduled for Labor Day, Monday September 5th, will take place at Rocketts Landing which is a mile or so downstream from Browns Island.

And appropriately, it will be billed as "Rockets Red Glare."
