55 West

55 West has good street interaction--in Orlando, this is all you can really hope for unless a mayor in the future pushes to sell off the executive airport, turn it into an urban neighborhood, and eliminate height restrictions on downtown.

Generally I've been satisfied with the street interaction on most new downtown projects; the Plaza remains questionable. Highlights are Thornton Park Central and the u/c Paramount.

I've noticed tons of peds walking along Court St. all day and night. also, peds crossing underneath between PTP North and South. fairly busy walking paths. I think Bento Cafe is helping that along a bit. Once Corona opens tomorrow, see how busy PTP will become with two major bookend resaurant/bars at the two corners of the development.

As for 55W, I say wait until it's painted... that design looks promising once the details are done with.

i guess. IMHO, 55W is the ugliest building downtown. it looks like it belongs on Disney property, not an urban center. Oh well...density is density in Orlando.

I think it really depends upon where & from what angle you're viewing it from. From the front at ground level, it looks pretty impressive. But from just about anywhere else, you're right. Looks like it ought to be in LBV or I-Drive somewhere.

Orlando.... <_<

why all the sudden hate for all of our buildings downtown

As much as I like Downtown Orlando, I'll be the first to admit that we have some pretty ugly buildings downtown. And it's no coincidence that some of our most disappointing new designs are the ones that have come up short in the height department. For example, I wouldn't have as many qualms about the design of Solaire if it didn't look so squat. The same goes for 55 West, though, honestly I wouldn't want a 500+ foot version of this building in our downtown...it's too ugly for icon status. Yeah, it looks fine from the south and ground level, but whenever i see that gigantic parking pedestal from any other angle, all I can think of is:

what are these f*ckers thinking with this paint scheme on the E-W facades? I'm getting p*ssed here. I thought they were going to offset the beige with maroon colored balconies or something. instead, it's all monochrome with darker balcony plates...
