Pedestrian Shaming in Charlotte

It sounds more concerned about an older lady walking to the grocery store at night than any kind of criticism of walking to a store.  I hope someone helps here and gets her to a store with a ride or goes and buys the groceries for her.

She wants to walk and enjoys it (per other people that spoke to her). She is apparently annoyed she gets stopped by so many people when she just wants to walk to the store versus get in the car to go a few blocks. The point of my post is people see walking in Charlotte as concerning. In other cities, even at night, an old lady walking to the store is just part of every day life / not weird. Here it is considered dangerous. 

I don't blame the poster for thinking this way as it is the prevailing thought in Charlotte to think something is wrong if somebody old is walking at night to the store. People are coming from good intentions wanting to help her, but it also means as a community we believe cars = safe / normal and walking at night is dangerous.

It they build the red line for me, I promise I will never drive again unless going out of town. Actually, I moved up here (lake) 15 years ago because they said if was going to be built.

Davidson will now cite jaywalkers if they don't use the crosswalks in downtown Davidson.

^ Hope they also plan to cite crosswalk encroachers, speeders and stop sign runners.

If drivers are not stopping at crosswalks, as the law requires, then pedestrians don't get any benefit from using them.

Boy, you'll get a ticket in a heartbeat in Oregon if you drive through a crosswalk with someone even looking like they're going to step into it. This law really needs to be enforced.

Zebra crossings are often a danger. People think that drivers will stop as they are crossing, and half of the time they don't. Foreigners should be warned that traffic only stops for deer and geese (sometimes). The crosswalks seem to be targets for the daring. I will not blame locals as we are a small percentage of the population. Where are the cops?  I support zebra crossings. I just wish that laws demanding drivers stop for pedestrians were tougher and/or enforced.

As a pedestrian I am ashamed that anyone in this city would think this is okay to do.  There was a girls soccer game at Pearl St Park.  I wish I had a ticket pad I could have busted at least 6 doing this.  The city needs to not allow this to happen. 

These people would call the cops on me if I ever parked like that on their curb in their neighborhood which I am guessing from the cars and vehicles I saw is quite nice and nearby too.

It gets even worse sometimes. I've seen people just straight up parking in the bike lane blocking the entire path.

Has anybody called 311 and reported a non-emergency parking issue to get CMPD's attention on this? They may just not be driving down this street to notice the violation and if people start complaining they may ticket these offenders. In instances like this, we need to be as aggressive as the Karen's that call 311 every time they see anything they don't like on THEIR street. The entitled $50,000+ SUV crowd doesn't get to do whatever they want just because princess / center of the universe is playing soccer.

What's crazy about this is that there are probably close to 1000+ parking spots within an easy 5-minute walk from here. They are just extremely lazy. If the city isn't going to enforce they need a citizen-driven reporting system like NYC where the reporter gets a 25% kick back as in incentive.

Okay from Charleston our sister city on the coast.  Even the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian bike protected lane is not safe from motorists.

No injuries reported after vehicle drives onto pedestrian lane of the Ravenel: CPD (msn.com)

the driver was reportedly follwing this GPS and was from the great state of Florida.

The most charitable interpretation of their failure to do anything useful here is CDOT is intentionally letting it become a crapshow in order to speed the pedestrianization of the street.

I don't really think that is what is happening here but...

[I cross this street as a pedestrian very frequently and  I honestly believe I am more likely to get hit here than when I am crossing South blvd. ]

From both a pedestrian perspective and a car perspective, this intersection is A LOT. Its very stressful to drive through and walk through. I think eliminating cars on Camden (except during delivery windows) would make this intersection vastly safer. which reminds me I never finished my PED plaza on Camden rendering.

Pedestrians don't have a chance . . . (corner of South Blvd. and Rensselaer) at the pedestrian crossing.

That intersection really should have a normal set of traffic signals.  I think they would be more noticeable for the average driver instead of just the pedestrian crossing lights.

It's been a while since anyone has commented on how criminal it is that there is no traffic light with pedestrian crossings at Belmont and N Davidson yet. 

So let me renew that: It is absolutely criminal it is that there is no traffic light with pedestrian crossings at Belmont and N Davidson yet.
