Orlando Magic

Recommended Posts

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern has died. He led a big expansion of the league in the 1980’s and had a belief in the viability of an NBA team in Orlando when most in the sports community were skeptical.

Our condolences to his family and friends.

I’m not a fan of the DeVos family at all but I give my heartiest thanks and props to them for stepping up and paying their hourly employees for the remainder of the regular season that has been curtailed. That includes the Orlando Magic, the Lakeland Magic and the Solar Bears.

Great job!

Yesterday was Black Thursday indeed. John Morgan is a caricature and I scarcely take anything he says seriously but I can understand his frustration with the Magic. This guarantees at least 3 more years being a bottom-tier team. The Magic SHOULD be better for it long-term but it’s gonna be a hopeless half-decade.

It’s official - John Morgan declares the Magic “the worst team in all of sports”:

https://m.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/archives/2021/03/25/john-morgan-ethers-orlando-magic-on-twitter-calling-them-worst-team-in-all-of-sports

From The Orlando Weekly

I know Morgan is a bright fellow,  but he should write about things he knows such as bars, getting out of DUIs and legalizing pot since his knowledge of basketball and sports seems lacking. The Magic- while bad- are nowhere near the worst NBA franchise (see Twolves currently and all time). Also, throughout sports there are and have been much worse (Bucs and Jags are historically terrible) and Cleveland, as a City, seems to have a special form of suffering.  And I like Gordon as a person and a player, but no one (except the OW writer) viewed him as team's "loan bright spot".

This teardown was long past due and is the only way to ever get over the mediocrity. And no that is not guaranteed but it is historically valid- see Spurs, GSW, Cavs, Heat- all championships were built on having the worst record a few years prior to the championship and clearing cap room and drafting well (although the Heat didn't draft well for about 15 years).

For the most part the media is giving the Magic FO high marks for finally ripping off the bandage.

Once again, it’s Groundhog Day at the Am. The good news for Coach Clifford is that several of his predecessors moved on to big wins as soon as they got away from the DeVos’ Gang That Can’t Shoot Straight.

That’s the kind of out of the box thinking we’ll never see from the DeVos family…

I'm sure she is a swell person and she was a fairly good player, but she has only has one year of assistant level experience at the pro-level.  I think that outside of the box thinking is what gets you a game show host as a president.

I would hope that in the name of "equity" they would not choose her over others like Kenny Atkinson, Ty Corbin, Vanderpoole, Jerry Stackhouse or several other young assistants who have spent years learning the trade.

If the Magic are going to roll out a bunch of athletes who barely know the fundamentals of team basketball then I'd prefer they have an experienced hand steering the ship.

I'd love to have her as an assistant coach. I'd also be thrilled to get Becky Hammon as a head coach.

In what would be a delicious bit of irony after his role in the first departure of Coach Brian Hill, the Athletic is reporting University of Memphis Coach Penny Hardaway is being seriously considered as the Magic’s next coach:

Actually the Magic told him he didn't make the cut so he withdrew his name (widely reported). Not uncommon.

Also, Memphis seems to be cleaning up in the recruiting department so he has every reason to stay.

Orlando City Sale complete to Wilf Family. . .

But with Minority Stake sold to DeVos Family :tw_grimace:  YIKES!

DON'T MAKE MY TEAM INTO THE TRAGIC!

"As minority investors, the DeVos family will mainly fulfill an advisory role, providing insight and helping the Wilfs integrate into the Orlando community. They will not hold a voting position on the board and will not serve in a daily operational role."

I don’t even have words. That’s like making Randy Fine UCF’s Athletic Director. I’m glad I long ago decided to focus on collegiate sports.
