Thought a thread for bicycle-related infrastructural and program developments seemed appropriate. Post any news related cycling in Richmond. Also, feel free to share any articles that were previously shared in broader threads here on bicycles. 

Just resharing the article on the bike-share program coming to Richmond because I came across another curious article (see 2nd link) on how Milwaukee's bike-share program teamed up with their Housing Authority in order to ensure accessibility to lower- and low income neighborhoods.

I love cycling around RVA!  I'm really hoping to see some more development and upkeep of bike lanes.

With the introduction of Pokemon Go I've been seeing so many more people walking and biking around RVA and enjoying our great public spaces, it's been amazing!  Hopefully it will get more people to see how great bikeable and walkable places can be.

I bike to and from work everyday (now playing Pokemon Go so it takes twice as long). I would still love to see some more bike friendly development. However I don't have as much a problem as everyone else with biking in traffic.

I often bike to work as well. I don't mind biking in traffic, but some roads can be a bit irritating.  There is a stretch of Janhke Road that I take on my way to work that has no shoulder and cars often like to pass within a foot, narrowly missing oncoming traffic.  Luckily it is eventially supposed to get updated to be a bike friendly route.

You can see all the roads that are slated to be updated to be more bicycle friendly in the RVA Bicycle Master Plan.

Kim Gray decides to delay acceptance of grant money for bike lanes on 1st and 2nd a month. Community conversations should be arranged, but these plans have been in the bike master plan since 2015...

Thoughts?

Personally I would love if the bike lane that take from 2nd to the Belvidere Bridge were extended through the city to my apartment.

I'm all for bike lanes, I'm unsure of why she wanted the delay, doesn't make much sense to me. Out of the two streets, I'd really like to see first street get a bike lane, it would help connect the lower income housing across the interstate to connect to broad street and the new rapid bus line.

Article about bike lanes on First and Second streets in Jackson Ward.  I understand why people who don't cycle are a bit apprehensive about this, but once the lanes are in place, I think the skeptics will be surprised by how much bike lanes improve urban life (not to mention make car-free living easier in RVA).

Thanks for the share. I am quite sure that studies have shown that the addition of bike lanes increases accessibility to sidewalk businesses... plus they aren't planning on reducing parking lanes, just travel lanes.

If I'm not mistaken, reducing a travel lane ought to slow down traffic too.  Should make the neighborhood more pedestrian friendly.  Sounds like a win-win.

Nice find.  I think that they need to connect UR to the bike network, but this is a good start.  Extending Patterson to Libbie (if not to the county line) would be another project that I would like to see.  From a pure safety standpoint, Cary/River needs a grade separated bike/running trail at least at far west as Tuckahoe Creek.
