New Hotels in/around Uptown

Since I am a Hilton guy I wanted to see about the hotels they have in this area.

Couple of things on their website:

Homewood Suites opening August 4 by the Ellis on N College

rebrand of the Holiday Inn Uptown to Doubletree by Hilton uptown "opening" Nov. 20

total Hilton properties in the metro area 67 across all brands with 6 with 2 more coming soon uptown.   Marriott brands still dominate uptown Charlotte.  14 locations across all their brands. 

still my idea is for the Hilton uptown to convert to their new Signia brand and add 400 room tower on the parking lot across the convention center and then we would have a hotel bigger than the Westin and this is their new convention oriented brand.  Massive new 975 room Signia by Hilton opening in downtown Atlanta.

And the Charlotte area is still missing many Hilton brands like Tapestry, Curio, Conrad, Motto, Tempo,

That whole project is hands down some of the worst architecture in uptown. The street presence isn't much better either.

I think with the right materials it would look stunning. 

I love the way it looks, the colors, shape, etc. It’s just the materials that kill it for me. But I’d still say i like it more than dislike. But I can imagine the sun fading the paint making it look worse. One solution is build around it with prettier buildings lol

That is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the aerial of the massive parking lot across the street.

It honestly looks like its still under construction.   It looks like they wrapped it the same press board they use in residential construction that they attach siding to.

they had their soft opening last week when they were advertising rooms just in time for the Beyonce concert as I saw it on the Hilton app.

Rode past this site last week and it finally looks complete. The hotel is basically what I expected, nothing fancy but at least another option for hotel guests.

On a side note, the number of what I assume to be homeless people between N College and Tryon Street (where the old Mecklenburg county services building sits) was pretty astounding. There must have been 40-50 people walking/sitting around that area, and most seemed to be in pretty rough shape. I know this gets into the much larger topic of mental healthcare in this country, but I have to think the physical presence and perception of this area is really holding back the north end of Uptown.

I believe that is a food drop off site for several charity groups.  The homeless congregate there because of that.

This is correct. Multiple non profits and churches pass out food and have access to the annex building by the county as part of the Homeless Resource Center. In addition, with the building abandoned and little oversight over the lot, it is an easy gathering space where you don't feel like you are intruding on private property or have security guards chasing you away.

The Element hotel opening Dec. 19 according to the Marriott website.

and my photo is the worst angle ever on the Element hotel LOL. 

and we need more uptown rooms for sure.  The American Legion convention is spread  around 14 uptown hotels next week.

and thanks to a tip there was a huge meeting of Trader Joe's Captains which maybe means managers.  Aloha shirts all over uptown earlier this week.  Hopefully they saw this market needs more than 3 locations.

Not new hotels but lots of renovations of the big players uptown.  From the Biz Journal. 

First 700 room Westin. 

""The Westin Charlotte’s three-phase renovation project targets 50,000 square feet of hotel spaces. Those efforts will reinvent the hotel’s meeting space, refresh its fitness facilities, update rooms with the Westin’s signature Heavenly bedding and overhaul the lobby, making way for a new, 140-seat restaurant and bar concept.

“I think it was time to reinvest in the Westin,” says Abigail Gravgaard, complex director of sales & marketing for The Westin Charlotte and Charlotte Marriott City Center. “We’ve got a significant new supply (of hotels) that has come in. We need to make sure we’re keeping relevant.”

The Westin, at 601 S. College St., is Charlotte’s largest hotel with 700 rooms.   The newly upgraded meeting spaces will open in May, with the lobby revamp to be completed in December. Design choices focus on natural woods, a neutral color scheme, plenty of greenery and a dynamic light fixture known as the Dogwood Dapple — a nod to North Carolina’s state flower""       

(much needed overall is going to happen in the lobby and I have always thought that space was too big and empty so the addition of a restaurant/bar is good thing.)

then over at our small Ritz Carlton hotel

Hope the Westin can renovate their outdoor area along Brooklyn. Sidewalks are in need of repair where the trees are planted and landscape lighting are all broken. I know it is pretty much the smoking area for the hotel but wish the Westin could use their imagination a little for that area.

^The exterior of the Westin needs a paint job REALLY bad. Lots of chipped and pealing paint / stucco. I'm sure their maintenance team is overworked, but they seem behind. The Soco Bar signage on College has also had stickers to Free Palestine posted all over it for 3 weeks now.

Agree.  The Westin does seem tired.  They need to fix the fountain spouts and up lighting on that corner facing the JW.  They haven’t worked in like 10 years.

according to the Marriott website, this will be opening this month.  The Element by Westin is an extended-stay hotel.
