SouthEnd "Gold District"

Giant "For Lease" sign out front of the WePak building in Southend.  I'm honestly surprised that this building has lasted in this neighborhood.  It has a massive footprint and is in a prime location, sandwiched between Craft, Unknown, and Seoul Food.  Not to mention is is horrifically ugly and acts as  barrier for pedestrians between all of those locations.  Seems to me like an apartment developer would have been itching to snatch this up.

I actually find this portion of the building to be attractive. Yeah, the cheap remodel takes away from the character but there's a lot of potential here.  Now the rest of the facility can be torn down but please save this part.

I agree with that.  There are parts of this building that could be cool if they are renovated, broken up into smaller units, and completely re envisioned.  I really like how Craft was able to use the back wall as a projection screen to show movies for their patrons.  The same wall has a mural on it right outside Unknown.   But the shipping/receiving dock on the corner of Bland and Church surrounded by barbed wire is horrible.  Even that part of the building though, would be awesome as a courtyard or beer garden for a new tenant.

General question: Is there enough demand for all of these new retail places that are coming online in the Gold District and South End? It just seems like a lot of spaces  are available for lease all at once (Eden's leasing Atherton 2.0, Asana with the Design Center & others, the Railyard, this thing making Bland St less Bland, and DFA).  For example, I drive past the prime  (maybe?) corner spot in the new apartment complex at South and Remount that has sat empty since the apartment complex opened.

I think there is a ton of demand in Southend along Camden, Tremont, and in the Gold District.  I think retail fronting South Blvd is more challenging.

In my ideal vision of South End, Camden would become a pedestrian-only street with tons of retail.

That's an excellent idea... I think I will add it to my "wish-list" as well. cover the entire street with brick add some benches/seating and you've got a sweet little hangout spot!

Funny thing about Charlotte Saw. I took  tools to them once for sharpening (I lived in Dilworth). The clerk said it would be two weeks for service. As an explanation of the delay he added, unnecessarily, that the small tool sharpener specialist had cut off a finger and would be out for a while. This happened.

Wonder if that had anything to do with its recent sale to a new owner.  The old owner had a fantastic collection of old concert stubs from the 60s and 70s on the wall. (as well as posters promoting concerts).  I've been taking my wife's knives down there over the past few years and, for me, it usually takes less than a day for the several knives.

It's living history.  I hope that whole street stays intact for a while.....maybe even adding a brewpub along the way.

I second that.  The problem I have felt about South End is you arrive there and can't tell where the heart of is.  This is especially true for an outsider visiting the city.  There's a nagging feeling of "am I there yet?"  Something is missing.  I have felt that there should be a big plaza, surrounding by shops, restaurants, etc, at one of the lightrail stops.  You get off the train and you know immediately your in the middle of SouthEnd.  You can take a seat in this plaza, relax and figure out what you want to do.  You don't automatically have to have some particular destination in mind, which is the way it is now.  Having that sort of central plaza atmosphere helps you get oriented, and as you wander off, you know instinctively where to go back to, where the starting point is.  By blocking off Camden St. as pedestrian only, replacing the pavement with brick and benches, maybe putting in a water fountain, you automatically have your central plaza surrounded by shops and other retail and entertainment.  Voila!  South End has its heart.

Agreed. I feel like South End needs a main drag filled with shops, nightlife and restaurants. Some might say that South Blvd is the main drag of South End but I disagree with that, There's not as much as there could be on South Blvd and same with other streets located in South End.
