Charlotte-Douglas Airport (CLT) Expansion

2 out of the 3 years CLT-BCN has operated were when US and AA were separate carriers. Last year was the first year CLT-BCN was operated by AA.

CLT/JFK/MIA/PHL/ORD are all US gateways to BCN for AA. Whilst BCN is a large market, it isn't as large as say FCO and likely doesn't need flights to five different hubs, especially when PHL/JFK/MIA might be better equipped to handle the traffic flows.

Remember US didn't have a choice. All TATL flying had to be routed over CLT or PHL. Now DFW/JFK/MIA/ORD are also in the picture.

Well AA has just loaded a new schedule, and Barcelona has got extension for this season: running through to the end of September rather than the start.

Barcelona is a OneWorld hub as well with Iberia, don't forget that... Which would help maintaining flights from American's second largest hub.

Iberia has really cut back their hub at Barcelona to the point that it's not a hub anymore. There are 5 destinations from Barcelona that Iberia serves, 4 of those are in Spain. You could theoretically connect to another oneworld carrier in Barcelona such as Qatar or Cathay Pacific but the schedules are not setup for connections. Barcelona is truly a destination airport as far as oneworld is concerned.

Hasn't Vueling filled Iberia's role in BCN since IAG brought Vueling?

I saw that today as well. I would personally rather be cautiously optimistic regarding our transatlantic future than to think that this extension is reflective of the overall performance of our transatlantic network. I was surprised to see JFK-ZRH to get extended as well. I still personally wouldn't be surprised to see a transatlantic route get cut from CLT, especially if AA's transatlantic performance is as bad as they say.

AA doesn't codeshare with Vueling-so it really doesn't matter where Vueling flies at this point. IIRC, they currently only codeshare with Iberia, Qatar, and BA.  There might be an interline agreement in place between them.

They have a "Connections Agreement" whilst not the same as a codeshare it means that "passengers will benefit from Vueling’s 140 destinations in Europe, the Middle East. and Africa, via Barcelona" and "enables Vueling to operate as a feeder for long haul flights."

^Just as I suspected, that's basically a glorified interline.

I just checked AA.com to various European and Spanish domestic destinations this summer, and it was all CLT-MAD connecting to Iberia, Air Nostrum, or Iberia Express. I'm surprised they don't codeshare, tbh.

We're getting Saturday only summer seasonal service to Bangor, ME on a CRJ 700.

This is the first new route addition in a while it seems like... even if it is only a few flights during the summer, hopefully it can eventually grow to daily

Frontier is also adding a new route between Charlotte and Cleveland-Hopkins. The flight is Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday and intro fares are $27 each way.

Flight times:
Depart Cleveland: 7:20PM
Arrive Charlotte: 9:00PM

Depart Charlotte: 9:50PM
Arrive Cleveland: 11:26PM

Only competition is the 7 nonstop flights on American Airlines that seem to average around $300 round trip.

BCN will stay. AA does amazingly well with the city pair partially due to Mediterranean cruise traffic in summer. The only thing I can see changing is downgrading the aircraft type (330 to 767).

Can't wait to work it. When do we add Marsh Harbour too?  When does it begin?

▪ Charlotte to Georgetown: Starting June 3, the flight will depart on Saturdays at 9:20 a.m. and arrive at about 11:40 a.m. The return flight will leave Georgetown at 12:20 p.m. and land in Charlotte at about 2:34 p.m. The flight will be suspended between Aug. 20 and Oct. 6, which is the peak hurricane season.

▪ Charlotte to Bangor: This season route will run June 3 to Aug. 19. Flights will depart at 9:30 a.m. and arrive at 12:10 p.m. in Bangor, with a return flight leaving Bangor at 12:45 p.m. and arriving in Charlotte at 3:35 p.m.

The Georgetown flights are up on American.  Little under $1000 for a round trip in Business in June.

Passenger numbers actually declined this year. However, the number of local passengers increased 7%, and international flying increased 10% too.

Charlotte's 1% decline in passenger volume perfectly matches American Airlines 1% decline in load factors in 2016 vs. 2015 (across their entire network). Hub airports dominated by American Airlines were all relatively flat or posted small declines in passenger volume in 2016, whereas airports with lots of Low Cost Carrier activity, Delta hubs (growing in Seattle and LAX), and United hubs (they are converting more regional jets to bigger planes) posted stronger growth.

PHX declined 1.4%
MIA only grew 0.32%
DFW  only grew 0.20%

Basically, American Airlines planes were less full this year (at CLT and in their entire system) despite them operating the same number of flights at Charlotte Douglas.

I was in this airport on Monday and Tuesday.  Not at all impressed the first day, the newer part is much nicer.

I was also in Birmingham Tuesday.  One of the nicest small airports in the country.  Flew out of Memphis yesterday. It would be difficult to find a worse airport (excluding LaGuardia).  It's not inconvenient because crowds are small but the lobby bathroom hasn't changed since it was built in the sixties and food options are extremely limited.  Based on city size and all the cargo flown out of there, very surprised by that airport.

I'm hopeful that Charlotte will have one of the nicer airports of it's size in 10 years...
