  1. Would love to see the ACC implode personally. FSU bolts for sure. Clemson probably and I wouldn't doubt seeing Miami and Notre Dame follow suit. I hope UNC gets an invite from the Big Ten and the NC Legislature makes them stay in a watered-down ACC. That would be beautiful.
  2. Some time ago I was poo-pooed when I said casiNO. Bad deal. Bad location. Bad operator. Bad decision by the city. Promised a Ferrari receiving a Yugo.
  3. Observation (not to derail this thread): 110 East would look fantastic where Honeywell is and Honeywell would fit in perfectly where 110 East is.
  4. Growing pains, y'all. Designs aren't universally appealing. I initially hated the USAA building but after it was completed found that I was wrong. I love The Line building. Wish it was 20 floors higher. Some people hate it. Neither perspective is right.......just a perspective. Let me toot Charlotte's horn for those who have been feeling down about Charlotte lately (from an outsiders perspective). Bank of America Corporate Center.............in the 1980's and into the 1990's NO ONE believed that a 60 floor corporate office building could be built in Charlotte.......but it was. NBA........NO ONE thought Charlotte would get or could support an NBA franchise.......but it did. NFL..........NO ONE believed that Charlotte, NC would get an NFL franchise. Charlotte, seriously? But it did. Light Rail........why would a sprawling Sun Belt city need light rail? You guys built it and I would imagine the economic impact has been in the billions of dollars. This is why Charlotte now is growing, densifying and urbanizing at the rate it is.......because you folks have defied expectations and done things no one thought you could or should do. Who do you think you are, Atlanta? Not only are you growing South End but all over the place is urbanizing. I see it every time I go over there. A blah building doesn't negate everything else. Perspective, y'all. Growing pains.
  5. There are still places where you can clear your head and cleanse your spirit.........they're just harder to find.
  6. For those who don't know, the ocean is just beyond the houses on the right of the picture. When I was in college there was a dumpy little cottage I stayed in during summer in the vicinity of that picture. It's no longer there......demolished for the Hilton Garden Inn there now. Sorry, very off-topic.
  7. I absolutely love this building. Would love to see more like it.
  8. Animals.........one of the most overrated albums in the history of music. No blue font.
  9. I know a UPer who has family roots in Tyrell County........me.
  10. I think the city has a golden opportunity to refurbish/reimagine Scope, reinvent Chrysler Hall (by adding the previously seen glass enclosure) and totally transforming the plaza/outdoor area with an outdoor venue and public square concept with a lot of green space. Really this area is the heart of downtown and could do wonders for bringing more people there to live or visit. I have never liked the idea of a new arena outside of downtown. A vibrant arena and concert hall with heavy programming can help undo some of the decline over the last couple of years (since Paul Fraim retired).
  11. Damn. Seriously? In case it's unclear, my comment is about the sheer stupidity of the age comment.
  12. I wonder if the existing Amtrak station (or at least the site) could become a new CTC where city bus service and Greyhound could co-locate. Obviously keep Amtrak there while Gateway Station is being built. Then the current CTC site could be redeveloped not including a contentious bus transfer station. Begin building the Amtrak station at Gateway as phase 1 and the rest of the development as it can be. How about some type of dedicated bus/shuttle service that runs from the Blue Line and Gold Line stops at Spectrum Center to Gateway Station (Amtrak) to the airport at 15 minute headways? Also a bus/shuttle from said new CTC site to Gateway.
  13. Could Greyhound be located in the CTC? Seems logical (to me).
  14. If I could afford it..........Charleston hands down. To be close to family that probably won't come back this way...........Charlotte or Raleigh If I was 20 years younger and rich...........a close-in suburb of London
  15. Convention center, casino, mixed-use are all better options than a dead mall. Do this right by having residential to bring more full-time residents downtown. A convention center to bring customers for downtown businesses and hotels. A casino to make it "an exciting place". Keep some retail tenants facing the streets. Then upgrade Scope and Chrysler Hall. All great things to help re-energize downtown. These are all things the City can do. I would bet a new convention center and casino in the heart of downtown would interest hotel developers.
  16. As much as I hate to say it, I never thought a new arena should be built anyway. There is no major league team from any sport (new, expansion or relocating) that is going to locate here. Move forward with renovating Scope. At least it may be a catalyst for additional growth/development in downtown.
  17. Shouldn't this show the powers-that-be how imperative the new station at Gateway is? Forget the other development on the site if the market isn't there but get moving with the station.
  18. I think it's cool that a lot of you folks can walk around and see your city changing daily.
  19. This project hurts my brain. Does the $88 million include the hotel tower or is that just for the theatre renovation?
  20. Will the new library and the existing old church be open to each other? A few years ago in Norfolk, VA the city built a new very modern library adjacent to a very old building and integrated the two. It is very lovely and interesting with one part being classic and the other side modern. Picture below.
  21. Was in Charlotte this weekend visiting my daughter. Highlights included finally getting to explore in the Plaza Midwood, Elizabeth and Commonwealth Park areas. Very neat urban neighborhoods. Beautiful fall foliage. We love the rows of bungalows and homes. Very reminiscent of where I live (architecturally). My wife and I love the houses setback on their little hills. Keep in mind I live on the coast where we have no hills so a house a few feet higher than street level may as well be on a mountain to me. Went to Repo Records. Very extensive selection of vinyl and CD's. Found a few good 80's finds. Basically walked around some areas and drove through others. Very pleasant afternoon. Hit some small shops and a cool vintage place. One thing I notice in Charlotte that I'm not used to is people are so "busy". Slow down ya'll Had a great time and will explore some more areas next time. Also, holy smokes, there are apartment buildings going up everywhere. Reminded of me of Wings stores at the beach........a new one on every corner.
  22. Is that a crane base in the left of the last photo? If so, add it to the list.
  23. How much of the growth in Austin is attributable to the tech industry? Are there other sectors contributing to the job growth in Austin? What would the effects be in Austin if the tech industry had a downturn? I don't know much about Austin but my perception is heavily skewed towards tech. I would guess some governmental as well. Energy? Oil? I know I've heard a lot about Oracle, Dell, Amazon, Google, Facebook, etc. there.
  24. That's exciting. Great building as proposed, will be awesome ten floors taller.
