  1. Out of curiousity, has anyone been to Zaytoon's restaurant at 301 N. Elm Street? I have a business lunch there next week and was curious...
  2. The busses are manufactured by the Gillig Corporation, one of the largest manufacturers of public buses in the country. Here is a link to the Hybrid bus page on the Gillig website.
  3. Effective October 1st, 2009; it will be illegal to dump plastic bottles into any landfill in NC. They must be recycled. Of course, it will be virtually impossible for many cities and counties to police this...
  4. StoryCorps will be in downtown Winston-Salem thru March 21st recording stories from people in the area. This is a national oral history project with all the recordings being sent to the Library of Congress. Some will be selected to be broadcast on NPR. They are taking appointments if you, or someone you know, has a story you'd like to tell about your life. To make an appointment, call 800-850-4406 or visit www.storycorps.net. Read about it here.
  5. First off, I'm glad it sounds like no one was hurt in your accident! Second, you didn't have a bunch of stickers that could have held the fender on after the wreck? lol
  6. I have friends visit from all over the country and they are all overly impressed with Emerald Pointe. It has been rated one of the best water parks in the country and they continue to do a good job! They are indeed an asset to the Triad!
  7. Evidently, Struever will be lucky to be in business, another victim of this economy. There are defaulting on loans on several projects totalling into the millions of dollars, including their project in Durham and are facing multiple lawsuits. They have officially anounced they will not be the lead developer of the North District project for the PTRP. They have put park officials in touch with another developer from Baltimore, Wexford. No agreement has been reached with Wexford yet. Read the WSJ article here.
  8. In defense of the article, Jimmy John's is having the grand opening celebration for this location Thursday. You can get the #1 and #6 sandwich for just 1 between 11am and 3pm.
  9. The Gaslight Anthem - Old White Lincoln from 'The 59 Sound' album!
  10. Here is a link to the Digital Forsyth website showing a picture of the final days of passenger service to Winston-Salem with Southern Railway's Number 16 train. There are pictures on there as well of the final passenger train between N. Wilkesboro and Winston-Salem.
  11. December unemployment figures for the Triad were released today, while the region is tracking simlar to the state (8.5 for the Triad, 8.7 for the state), the only two MSA's to add jobs in NC last month were the Winston-Salem MSA and the Greensboro-High Point MSA. Winston-Salem added 1400 jobs last month while Greensboro-High Point added 100. Still, there is much uncertainty about what Wells-Fargo will do with the 2,900 employees in the Winston-Salem area...
  12. If the option was easily available now to ride a train to ATL, have a decent schedule, and take relatively the same amount of time as the car (4.5-5 hours from my house depending on Charlotte/ATL traffic), I would take the train on certain occasions. If a high speed rail option was available, the only time I would entertain a car trip to ATL is if I was there for a long period of time and was goig to be doing some power shopping! Marta is fairly easy to use, but the bus schedules could be better.. you can be left standing at some stops for quite a while waiting for a transfer.
  13. I would so like to see this happen.. I like going to ATL, but absolutely detest the traffic. Alas, I'll be a senior in the nursing home by the time this comes to fruition.
  14. Well that bodes well if they ever fire a missle at Charlotte..
  15. I'm in W-S and it barely coated the ground here... sorry..
  16. This is a baby step which means little... city benefits for same sex partners, until this is done the hiring stance means nothing to me or the gay community. The Triad still lags behind many of our desired peers in this category. Where do the cities stand on the issue of Prop 8 and same sex marriage? Where are the out and proud police officers, fire fighters, EMT's, etc? If many of these folks publically outed themselves they would be 'blackballed' at work with little chance of promotion by their supervisors.
  17. I noticed the signs Sat. night going to Greensboro... also on the way back from a late night in Charlotte tonight I saw several caravans of cars/RV's heading up I-85 with signs saying they were going to the inauguration.. I can't wait til Tuesday!!
  18. Look for liquidation sales at all area Circuit City stores. The company is going to liquidate all locations. Winston-Salem Journal article about Circuit City liquidation..
  19. Let's not forget that HOA's can have special assessments for building upkeep or improvements. (This happened recently to the OLD YMCA in Winston, they had a special assessment to remortar the bricks on the building.) I would be more concerned with potential special assessments than the monthly HOA dues in a highrise building.
  20. I hope to do a weekend trip to downtown Raleigh in the spring when the weather's a tad nicer. One thing about your downtown, it's very deceiving.. it appears smaller (especially when viewed from I-40/440) but it's larger than expected and very walkable.
  21. Thanks for the suggestions! I had a great trip, but was kind of surprised at the number of downtown eateries closed on New Years. Ended up having lunch at The Pit. Good BBQ. Man, u guys need a bigger train station too!! lol Jones, tried Moonlight Pizza today while in Raleigh with work. The spaghetti was yummy indeed!
  22. While most corporate grocery store offices profess 'gay-friendliness', the management in their locations are usually quite homophobic. They may not do anything that would draw attention to a gay employee, but discrimination is rampant, especially in promotions and pay. I say this after having worked in many aspects of the grocery business for 21 years, including much contact with Food Lion.
  23. I decided to try out the train service in NC for New Year's. As far as the whole trip, this is how it went... took the WSTA bus to the downtown Transportation Center to catch the Amtrak Connector operated by PART. Arrived at High Point and took the Piedmont to Raleigh. Train left on time and arrived 10 min early. Left Raleigh on New Year's day on the Carolinian. Train arrived at Raleigh 12 min early. Passengers had ample time for a smoke break at the station. Arrived at High Point and took the Amtrak Connector back to the downtown Tranportation Center. Then caught a cab to the house. The city bus cost $1, the Amtrak Connector cost $2, the Piedmont's fare from HP to RAL was $13, the Carolinian's fare was $16, trip back on the connector was $2, and the taxi was $16.20. Grand total for the trip was $50.20, with the biggest expense being the taxi home (WSTA busses were not running for the holiday.) I was pleased with the trains, there were a few empty seats on the Piedmont; but the Carolinian was fairly well packed until Greensboro. The stations in High Point and Greensboro were beautiful and very functional. However Durham's and Raleigh's are both inadequate (as earlier addressed on this thread.) I was impressed with the cross section of people on the train, lots of college students and young professionals; many who had travelled to a downtown area (Raleigh, Richmond, DC, etc.) to meet friends for New Year's partying. I will probably use the train to go to Raleigh again, but I'm not sure if I could use it for Charlotte. I like to go club hopping and Raleigh's got a good club scene (GLBT) all with walking distance downtown plus plenty of restaurants. However, Charlotte's GLBT scene is a bit spread out for that. The only complaints I heard from folks were higher fares being charged by the conducter than what was listed on the website by Amtrak.
