  1. Just an observation as the national economy heads towards 'depression' (IMO), it's distressing to see all the armed robberies plagueing the Triad at the moment. Last night the Vitamin Shoppe on Hanes Mall Circle was robbed and earlier this week a Food Lion in Greensboro was robbed. It seems daily that multiple robberies are happening in Winston-Salem and Greensboro. It's also distressing that both major cities are now dealing with budgetary woes that will most likely put the brakes on any city financial backing to proposed projects.
  2. What ever happened to Flow's plans for Jaguar/Range Rover on Silas Creek??
  3. My concern is that Winston-Salem won't have the money to lend to this project. It is projected that the city could have a $2million dollar plus deficit for this fiscal year thanks to the economic downturn. They have already announced a hiring freeze and cut all non-essential spending. This could put the brakes on any new projects.
  4. It just disgusts me... all these companies that started here that were once so strong get snapped up be outsiders and ruined..
  5. Great pics! I was hoping to make it and got called into work on a support issue when I was getting ready to leave the house.. GRRR! Some of his staff showed me some pics they took at the Obama office in Winston yesterday. Wish I could have been there..
  6. Hello? Hello? Is Anyone in here? The Triad Forum has been awful quiet lately.....
  7. Late breaking word that Wachovia is actively pursuing a buyer. They are already in talks with Citibank. Wachovia is on life support and on the verge of failing. This is a dark day for the storied bank that started in the Twin City.
  8. Wachovia is being pummeled today in the stock market. Some figures suggest a 74% chance of the bank failing in the next 5 years. It is now a prime takeover/merger target. This could be extremely bad for Winston-Salem. There is a thread in the Charlotte forum here.
  9. Don't forget the March of Dimes NC Chili Championship and Rubber Duck Regatta at Tanglewood! I'll be out there volunteering!
  10. They've cut more before.. at one time a job cut would have spelled doom and gloom, but as time progresses RJR is not as major of a contributor to WS' economy. Still, it's gonna be tough in this economy to quickly find a new job for many of these folks, I hope the severence packages are generous. I truly dread the day though they vacate their office towers in downtown...
  11. My cousin got informed that his was one of the 570 jobs. It's a shame, at one time you had a good job at RJR for life.
  12. Did any other UPer's go to the Winston-Salem Air Show this weekend? I went Sunday and had a good time AFTER the NIGHTMARE of traffic and parking!!! It took me approximately one hour to go from the Business 40/US52 interchange to a parking space. Parking was scarce and event-run parking was EXTREMELY poorly managed. I had told some friends in Hickory about this event and it took them 2 hours to go from the Village Tavern on Stratford Rd to the airport. While I hope they keep running this event, something must be done to handle the crowds they got Sunday. I don't think they were expecting what they got and were poorly equiped to handle what they had, several parking lots had empty spaces but were blocked off from access. I had very negative comments from my friends on the airport, the city, and the planning of this event. I hope they remedy this next year so I may feel comfortable inviting out of town folks in 2010.
  13. B/E Aerospace is opening an additional facility to produce airplane seats in a 90,000 square foot building in the West Point Business Park off Stratford Rd. in Winston-Salem. B/E's income has been increasing and last quarter's was a record. WSJ Article about B/E expansion
  14. Pierce Homes, who has built many communities in the Triad, is now out of business. Many homeowners wonder if their warranties will be honored by anyone and there are communities which aren't finished. Some homeowners are looking at legal alternatives. This company has been building homes locally for almost 25 years, and has fallen victim to the economy and the downturn in the housing market. FOX 8 Article on Pierce Homes Closing.
  15. I worry about them too, a perfect storm could leave W-S's downtown virtually devoid of employment for some time....
  16. Reynolds American Tobacco is reviewing all salaried positions in preps for further layoffs. There are approximately 1800 salaried workers still in Forsyth County. Any reduction would take place by the end of September. This is on top of the IT dept shutdown that took effect this month due to outsourcing. I dread the day those two towers are darkened in downtown W-S. WSJ Article about RJR job cuts
  17. I haven't read about Honda moving, are they going to have 2 Honda locations in W-S? They have invested quite a bit of money on the Peters Creek Pkwy facility with the parking decks and everything.
  18. The Carolina's first and only Lamborghini dealer is now open in Greensboro on W. Wendover Ave. The city was chosen due to it's central location to other population areas and highway access. I'll take the red convertible please!! FOX WHGP Article
  19. Has anyone seen this website? It's called digitalforsyth.org, and it's a compilation of various library photo collection in Forsyth county. There are 1000's of pics digitally stored there. I looked at the 'structures' category and they have over 2100 images in that category. It was sad to see some of the amazing buildings which used to be in downtown Winston that were gone by the 60's. There also were some interesting photos of parades, fires, etc. If you got some time, check it out!
  20. Not picking on you in particular cityboi, but I find it very interesting on this board that everyone seems to 'hate' HOA's in new subdivisions while no-one seems to mind building associations (same thing) or Historical Neighborhood Associations which can be set-up to do the same things an HOA in a new subdivision does. Aren't they all trying to achieve the same thing? And if an HOA isn't for you there are still many neighborhoods where they don't exist. HOA's aren't necessarily a bad thing, it's more on the people who run them, how they interpret the rules, and how even handed they enforce them. They can actually be a tool to help make the subdivison feel more like a neighborhood.
  21. I just want to thank FOX8 for alerting the ENTIRE Triad to the cheap gas on Peters Creek PKWY. Every station (especially the Hess/Wilco at Silas Creek/Peters Creek) is packed on the verge of needing crowd control! Now I have to wait in lines reminescent of the Katrina shortage scares to get gas! FYI-Gas was $3.73 here yesterday, in other areas of W-S it was $3.89-$3.99.
  22. I don't think we'll see many financial mergers in the next couple of quarters.. these institutions want to work out their own myriad of problems (most banks have a least a couple of issues) even though the group as a whole did perform better than what Wall St. expected last quarter. Maybe BB&T can stay independant and start growing again when the dust clears. I think they could initiate a 'merger' which would increase their presence here.
