  1. In most historically English-speaking regions with a large mining industry you'll often find traces of Cornish immigration and influence. Cornwall mined tin for over 4000 years and locals developed quite the reputation for their expertise of extracting tin, copper, and other semi-precious metals out of the ground. The closest place that has (good) fresh pasties in the US is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A large Cornish community moved to the UP (Michigan's UP, not this website) for the Iron/Copper mining up that way in the late 1800's / early 1900's. The Finns who also immigrated to the region adopted pasties into their cuisine as well. As a half-Finn / half-Cornishman myself, the cultural fusion is fascinating. Just make sure to ask for "Swede" instead of "Rutabaga" if ordering one in Cornwall.
  2. I think this really highlights that there is definitely still a space for "premium" malls with high-end stores and top amenities. I frequently hear from folks that they are "going to South Park today" and will window-shop or buy a luxury item. On the other hand they'll just order online or go to the Outlet mall if shopping for lower-end/every-day clothing.
  3. Non-bank financial services here. Two days per week in-office is our new requirement. In reality uptake has been....low, but sounds like management will start turning the screws over the next month or two. I'm personally fine with hybrid and do feel a positive impact from being co-located with people I am working with. However, my NY/NJ colleagues are irate. There will be a lot of pressure on our company as folks leave for remote opportunities and we remain painfully understaffed in key areas.
  4. Shame about the plane. However, please explain what else the US should do to "do something" that DOESN'T end in a nuclear war?
  5. Greensboro is tucked in closer to the Appalachians. A lot of our weather in the Piedmont of NC is driven by Cold Air Damming (CAD) creating a "wedge" of cold air. Essentially, relatively shallow cold air is pushed out of the NE against the eastern side of the Appalachians. Since Greensboro is closer to the mountains that are funneling cold air down out of the NE, it takes longer for this effect to break down than in Raleigh or Charlotte. This type of weather is also associated with damp, wet weather during the fall, winter, and spring, causing more average rainfall as well.
  6. Today I got in what will likely be my last trip to the Midnight Diner in its current location. Not sure I'll make it to Uptown Cab on the other hand, or at least I won't say so on a semi-public forum.....
  7. Saw the fanfest Uptown tonight and it was a little...sparse.
  8. Depends on how optimistic you are, but it's potentially true. We did slow down our rate of growth in the past census, but given COVID issues it's a bit of a ???? until 2030. If I had to pick one year only I'd say 2027, but we'll never 100% *truly* know the exact year.
  9. I've always had better luck with Bojangle's out in the countryside.
  10. Honestly a lot of fun: https://iafisher.com/projects/cities/usa I was proud of getting over 400!
  11. I think my girlfriend is most upset that they will be losing the Bowling Alley and the Sushi Bar as part of this......
  12. I would disagree, but I come from a family of yooper Packers fans! In all seriousness, I'm interested to see how different the actual "official" 2020 numbers are vs. the 2020 census estimate. Hopefully we stay above 900K!
  13. As a former Michigander, I'm mostly just upset that Wisconsin annexed the UP!
  14. Just this past weekend I ran 5K on the American Tobacco Trail while visiting friends in Durham. Hope the XCLT trail can be just as impactful when it is completed.
  15. FINALLY. Have been waiting to use the new section (and had actually snuck onto a little bit of it a few times...I know I'm not alone in this)
  16. https://www.iheartberlin.de/a-glimpse-of-berlins-future-in-the-next-50-years/ Cool look at imaginations of what Berlin will look like in 50 years. I'm sure it (and Charlotte) will both be nearly unrecognizable.
  17. This happened with my parents. 2/3 kids ended up living in Charlotte, and this past year they finally pulled the trigger and moved to Matthews from Michigan.
  18. Unfortunately saw a motorbike (one of the types that rides in big groups around town without any mufflers and doing wheelies) rider try to use the Streetcar lane today to pass someone. His wheel got stuck in the track and he wiped out. Fortunately he was wearing a helmet and EMS was there within 5 mins, but scary to watch in person.
  19. Very random request, but does anyone know of any Albanian-American groups, clubs, organizations, restaurants, or events in the region? Feel free to shoot me a PM. Edit: It's not for myself, but for someone I know that I want to convince to move here.
  20. I enjoyed my meal when I went there for my GF's birthday - but I definitely had the chicken version of one of their dishes. I can't speak to the vegan menu there.
  21. The power of social media I suppose. I agree, it gets a bit crazy but I like Charlotte getting the extra attention as a small-market team. Also youngest player to have a Triple Double in NBA history last night!
  22. Thoughts on Hayward? I really like him and hope he does well, but paying $39M/year (when you include the waiving of Batum's contract) is a LOT.
  23. As someone with deep Michigan roots, I am very happy to see this. Parts of Detroit have definitely rebounded and are doing immensely better, but it will take generations to recover from the mass de-industrialization and white-flight that took place from 1960-2010. Detroit peaked at 1.85M residents around 1950 in only half the sq. miles as Charlotte. It was 4x as dense as modern day Charlotte back then. Imagine if Charlotte lost 2/3 of it's population and how empty it would feel....truly a tragedy
  24. Might be a little late, but volunteer to be a poll worker if you are younger and in good health and not in contact with at-risk individuals.
