  1. Man what’s going on with Wooden Robot? Is it just me, or has their beer quality taken a sharp sharp decline? I went today and had a very mediocre winter ale and followed it up with their tried and true Good Morning Vietnam which was completely undrinkable. My wife felt the same way. Such a shame for what used it to be my favorite brewery in Charlotte.
  2. This is going to be a VERY interesting building. That parcel is very narrow and very long. I am not sure of any high rises in the city that are on a lot with dimensions like this one. (Sidenote - RIP Bulldog, one of my favorite places to grab a mediocre beer in Southend for a while) I wonder if anyone has taken a swing at the land on Summit and Church which I believe is a refrigeration equipment warehouse. That seems like very valuable land which is currently under-utilized.
  3. ^ lol This is Charlotte. Its going to be a handful of stick build luxury apartments and all the retail will be 5/3 Bank branches with drive-throughs.
  4. Its okay, it kind of gives me warmup kit vibes. I still think the logo for the team is bad and building the team branding around a bad logo is just going to make everything else bad too.
  5. Let’s take Uptown’s Wonderwall which is eventually going to be hidden by other developments and install it here. Would make for a much more interesting view than the black mesh (which doesn’t look very good in my opinion).
  6. Would you feel differently if he reaches a settlement or something? I'm starting to think that all of the talk about him being traded right now may indicate that he is going to quietly settle with these women to avoid the messy legal process that would surely unfold. I'm torn on it. Don't forget that Ben Roethlisberger is still starting on an NFL team and Kobe Bryant has been deified in NBA circles. Not saying that makes it right, but there is precedent.
  7. Thats a solid list. I guess I've just aged out of knowing where all the cool kids are these days.
  8. You say that like it isn't the main appeal of Tyber Creek Also, your point about there not being any bars that stay open until 2AM in Southend is pretty remarkable. Even in my crappy little hometown of 20k people, the bars are open until 2. Seems like the core neighborhood for 20-somethings should be able to support more bars that stay open late.
  9. You beer lovers are aware of Snallygaster I'm sure. One of the biggest beer festivals in the US features the best breweries in the US and abroad. Two of Charlotte's best and brightest will be there this year. Resident Culture & Wooden Robot making appearances and I'm sure they will impress. Full list on their website: https://www.snallygasterdc.com/ I wish I could be there. Maybe next year.
  10. Back in my construction days, we would get put up in all kinds of "cost effective" hotels. The guys I worked with never seemed to mind, but they were likely used to after years of travelling around doing construction. I mostly worked local projects so I could go home afterwards, but some of my coworkers would spend 12+ months straight in an extended stay hotel. One of the reasons I ended up quitting was because I got put up in a Super 8 in Milford CT that had a nasty rat infestation and was really run down. I hated coming home from a 12 hour day doing construction to a nasty hotel room. Those construction workers out there are tough, trust me.
  11. You understand that this isn't weird or rare at all once demolition fencing goes up, right? Its just people going into the buildings to look for scrap copper or anything else they can salvage before the building gets torn down. The demolition contractor likely didn't even bother locking the doors.
  12. Resident Culture has started posting job openings for their Southend location on their Instagram. I completely forgot that they were opening a new spot in the Gold District.
  13. Agreed. The excitement of the height and density have worn off and now I’m just stuck on the monolith of a parking garage. Can’t see past it. Not to mention the fact that screening on parking decks almost always looks 100x worse in reality than in renderings. If a massive deck is unavoidable, I wish we could at least take something like the Honeywell design and put it here. It would fit in better with all the brick buildings around it.
  14. This is what happens when you subcontract the landscaping to Dr. Seuss. In all seriousness though, that is bizarre and it looks like the bulk of the tree's root-bed is going to be under loose landscaping soil and above grade. That tree is going to topple with the first storm, right? or is this more of an optical illusion?
  15. The rendering that shows Central looks to include wide sidewalks and retail. I think the city needs think about how to slow traffic down on that stretch of Central to see much more than that. It feels way better walking up between Pecan and Thomas because it goes down to one lane and everyone drives a bit slower. Its the same issue with South Blvd in Southend. I'd love to see some patio dining options in this area, but not sure it would feel too cozy there. Regardless, I think it would be hard for this development not to be a big improvement here. I wish we could go back in time and hold some of the other developments on this strip to a higher standard in this regard, because everything around this has already closed itself off to Central and Pecan. If you look at what is around this development you have a CVS surrounded by surface parking, an apartment building's leasing office, Snooze which sandwiched parking between itself and the sidewalk, a pawn shop with bars on the windows, Midwood Smokehouse which also sandwiched parking between itself and the sidewalk, two more commercial buildings with zero pedestrian interaction, and the corpse of a Dairy Queen from 70 years ago. Pecan isn't too much better.
  16. I think you linked to the wrong horrifying murder case. The link you posted is about the three year old shot and killed in Northwest Charlotte. Both stories are disgusting and disheartening. NODA homicide link is below: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/crime/charlotte-noda-homicide-hurricane-ida-evacuee-suspect-wanted/275-c33dd3c7-0f17-4b8d-9254-8de98de5caa0
  17. Yeah I'm with you. Its funny how stark the contrast is in the sentiments of UP and places like that. Axios commenters really really love parking is what I have realized.
  18. Wow those comments are NEGATIVE. Apparently that parking lot was near and dear to many hearts.
  19. I remember cowering under that tree as hurricane Irma's remnants came through Charlotte in 2017 and begging my dog to poop so I could go back inside.
  20. Also, I'm struggling to make out the approved building heights. I'm assuming there is nothing of note here height-wise, but can anyone confirm?
  21. Hold on . . . are those preserved historic buildings, open public spaces, and wide and pedestrian activated sidewalks? Did you mean to post this on the Charlotte board?
  22. How about that for timing . . . Have they released a site plan or even a general plan on what to expect from this development? The fact that there hasn't been any type of press on this is curious.
  23. I want this thing to work and be useful so badly, but I just can't help but wonder who out there will actually get value from this. 20 minute headways to connect the edge of Plaza Midwood to Uptown seems like it will serve a very very niche (read small) market.
  24. Other than their building in Austin, Aspen Heights has a pretty underwhelming portfolio in my opinion. When I read the article I thought, "surely this can't be the same Aspen Heights that builds the cheaply-built college town apartments?" But it is. I have a bad feeling about this one. Maybe I'm just bitter that those awesome single story buildings couldn't be salvaged.
