  1. I think this building is more than 385' counting the crown. If we are including the spires of the Batman Building, then we should include the crown on this one.
  2. 2nd avenue is one of the most pleasant and interesting streets downtown. Trees are good! Let's have more! Could the city require builders to plant the types of trees with more survival potential?
  3. I know a former teamster whose dad was a friend of Hoffa's. He says Hoffa is under a bridge in New Jersey.
  4. If there are structural issues they should be addressed, but be careful, it is an irreplaceable icon. I've always thought it should be open on weekends and nights. There are a lot of tourists in town on weekends and many of them would stumble on it by accident and remember it thereafter as a charming piece of local color. I love fresh-roasted pecans! I also love Neigeville's description of Nashville as "grit and glitz side by side." Spot on! Could that be made into a slogan? Could something be done with "grit, glitz and grits?"
  5. The arcade is a time capsule that enables us to get in touch with the past. It needs to be just what it is. Upscaling it would destroy its charm.
  6. Did you know that the flatiron building is only 16 feet taller than Nashville's sky house? And it has two less floors?
  7. That Flatiron building would be just about right! If only Nashville had been built on a world-class harbor, or been part of an empire the sun never set on. In truth, I always wanted to live in Italy or New York, but it didn't happen. Now I am trying to enjoy Nashville's transition to a vibrant, thriving town and it makes that tough when photos of world-class architectural gems are posted here. I think I'll suck it up and go to YouTube for a trip to Venice, Queen of the Adriatic, to see the wonders created by a despotic power.
  8. I worked for 30 years in the building that preceded the Marriott on this site. So, if they follow the architectural rendering, it looks like there will be a balcony and three more floors, making 38. That plus being situated on high ground will make the Marriott prominent in the skyline. I like the building, but now I feel like we've built our share of glass buildings, so could we have some other material.
  9. I don't see any metal reinforcement rods sticking up through the 35th floor. You normally see those when an additional floor is going to be added. I also recall that one of their representatives once said that it was to be a 35 story building, which is what it is now. Anyone have any inside information?
  10. Even if an incentive package were huge, if the economic benefit to the city was many times the incentive package and it produced a watershed moment in the city's history; well?
  11. They made this part of trolley barn project larger than originally planned. Maybe the rest will get bigger as well.
  12. I hope its just photographic distortion, but my eye tells me that the Marriott is a leaning tower!
  13. Lotta good things happening here! Anyone tried the Brooklyn fish from Proper Bagel?
  14. The antebellum mansion was a longtime beauty spot which will never exist again. Another big loss was the block containing the art galleries, J J's, the Noshville and the nice old house, apparently for a project that is not going forward. We should consider carefully before we go down the path Houston took which has resulted in a city without a heritage and mile after mile of end to end strip malls interspersed with artificial, cooky-cutter enclaves, a town with a disjointed appearance. Of course one can drive downtown and admire the impressive and stylish towers. And there is the Woodlands oasis giving some relief in a vast wasteland. But couldn't Nashville take some lessons in historic preservation from, say, San Antonio, Galveston, or maybe Chattanooga? I will say that I think almost every Downtown, Sobro, and Gulch development has improved on what went before, and I like very much the Dream Hotel and James Robertson historic preservation projects, but the bottom line is that heritage discarded never comes again. And this town depends on its looks to attract the visitors who create the vibrancy and prosperity we are currently enjoying.
  15. I always liked the International Market. It was one of my youngest son's favorite eateries when he lived in Nashville. He presently lives in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. and works for Blue Sky Animation.
  16. I love this concept. I have heard that when we used to have horse races the jockeys who came to town for them stayed in the old Dream Hotel. True?
  17. The original pizza in Naples, Italy had thin crust, came in only two versions and had few ingredients. I remember when the first thing I wanted on a visit to Detroit was a pizza, because there was no decent pizza in the South. My oldest son makes the best pizza I have ever had, but its not available commercially.
