  1. Nashville metro area is right at 2 mil. Memphis is something over 1.3 mil. The city of Atlanta is smaller than Nashville, but gets to 5.1 mil by the time they claim 29 counties as their metro. I think your stats are better than mine. What I saw was a map which showed the Memphis area larger. But hey, I stirred up 9775 replies.
  2. Stats can be misleading. Nashville is a metropolitan government and counts the population of all of Davidson County as city population. Atlanta does not count all of Fulton County as its city population.
  3. Generalized statements are never very accurate. There are all kinds of people everywhere. I have met Brits who were anti-American snobs and have also met Brits who were welcoming and friendly.
  4. Many luncheon restaurants with a variety of foods, including excellent and genuine New York pizza. A Planters peanut shop, an old shoe repair store, an old watch repair store, an old style shoeshine stand, and a post office. There once were an art gallery and art studio upstairs, but I'm not sure if they are still there. There are tables and chairs in the concourse where you can eat your food. It is like being in a time machine.
  5. Exactly. And I think we've run out of luck on candidates. By the way, didn't Briley also say that we were not to be judged by what we build and it was time to allocate money to the suburbs?
  6. It was the beauty spot of that area. I enjoyed it for many years. The American idea is one of utilitarianism, and that has made us the richest nation in history. But we have destroyed our architectural heritage and now we have to pay thousands of dollars to travel to Europe in order to see the world as we wish it looked.
  7. The above advice is very good and I pretty much do the same things. The first time I drove to Washington I parked my car and immediately a man came over and asked for money. He felt it necessary to tell me that he was not going to kill me. When you speak in generalities you always miss the mark. Part of most towns is educated and part is not. Part of Nashville is educated; we have a number of good universities. The only place I ever felt relatively safe walking around at night was Venice, Italy.
  8. Another big loss similar to the one we had where the Virgin is being built. The town needs the texture provided by stylish old houses and mature trees in order to remain visually interesting.
  9. I like looking at trains. Is the stone retaining wall going to be put back?
  10. Der Fuhrer was extremely rude. In my art studio I have an old photo of a German soldier and a French collaborater admiring the Eiffel Tower during the Occupation. Wonder what happened to her?
  11. Ever go to the Luxembourg Gardens? Beautiful park. I would give 3 months of my life to have spent 3 months in Paris. Notre Dame, the Louvre, Montmartre, a side trip to Monet's house. C'est la vie! And with regard to the famous French rudeness, the only time I was treated rudely there was by a German.
  12. No matter how much a community gives to attract a business, if it ends up getting more than it gave, it has gained from the deal. I don't hate successful corporations or individuals. They create jobs and make everyone better off.
  13. Belmont is one of America's most beautiful campuses (voted 6th most beautiful urban campus a short time ago).
  14. I once saw a defecating drunk clear out the park behind Notre Dame. By the way, when walking around Paris, watch your step. Dogs have often been there before you. But I love Paris anyhow.
  15. The space between the Omni and the convention center plus Walk of Fame Park is one of my favorite downtown spots. It is impressive looking with great views, has lots to do and is great for people watching. The Omni also has a very nice lobby with some good restaurants, and the much-maligned Westin is actually quite enjoyable inside and features a fine rooftop lounge.
  16. Tall buildings are best seen from a distance and give an assessment of the size and wealth of that city. European mid-rises are often older buildings and come with architectural niceties not seen in our newer mid-rises.
