  1. Unfortunately the way the Affordable Care Act and other healthcare initiatives have been structured the only way to survive long term is to acquire assets and get big. Small hospital systems are gonna be extinct.
  2. I work at a large local hospital, the operating rooms skip from 12 to 14.
  3. So, uh gman don't ever vote for that Dorothy Dowe lady. (mission accomplished)
  4. OK, I get that affordable housing is important...gentrification and all that. What I'm wondering (as a member of the 99%) if they make the project 10 % "affordable housing", how do I get in on that action? I can't afford to live Downtown, but maybe with "affordable housing" I have a shot. I probably make too much to qualify for "affordable housing" but not REMOTELY enough for the high end housing. What if I quit my current job and take a minimum wage job? Problem is even if I qualify, won't there be a huge demand relative to supply? How do you get picked? I would LOVE to live Downtown, but I'm afraid if I downscale and don't get picked for one of the prime Downtown locations, I'll be stuck in section 8 housing in Easley or something. I'm kinda kidding but the people who get affordable housing downtown seems like they hit the lottery. Not saying it's wrong but unfortunately there won't be enough to accommodate everyone who wants to move DT.
  5. Great idea! Here are their emails: https://www.greenvillecounty.org/Council/ContactInfo.aspx I think these are the county members and my computer is blocking me from the city council site....hmm gman, please correct
  6. If that design is ultimately built this will be the biggest "miss" in a city with SO many "hits". They need to keep the helix design and bump it up closer to 200 feet. I know there isn't money for that but it would be worth waiting for a sponsor, a huge private donation (from GvilleSC), or even a gofundme page. The Liberty Bridge was expensive but was worth the cost because it's immediately associated with Greenville. The observation tower could be something special that visually connects it with Greenville (think Space Needle, Transamerica Pyramid). This is such an amazing opportunity, it would be a shame if our leaders squander it.
  7. This is a rare opportunity to take something from "cool" to " iconic".
  8. Sounds like someone has "crane envy"!
  9. OK, so I rode it this weekend (as well as several times before it was officially opened). The Orange Line to Hampton Station takes you to Washington Street (just south of Swamp Rabbit Cafe), you ride about 2 blocks on Washington Street then take the newly paved and wide segment to Hampton Avenue then about one more block to BFS. It's not a lot shorter than just getting on Hampton Ave past the Swamp Rabbit Bike Shop but not as sketchy. All in all it's an improvement and the crowds at Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Birds Fly South this weekend were HUGE, I need to come up with a business model for that area...any ideas?
  10. Whoa, just heard that President Elect Donald Trump was headed into Greenville as part of his victory tour. Apparently he was totally disgusted by the "downscale" Dunkin Donuts at our Third World airport (he said it compares unfavorably to Juba International Airport, South Sudan which has NO Starbucks at all). He was also very disappointed to find no Trump signs at the entrance to our fair city (what were we thinking?). President Elect Trump was also appalled to see a Cabela's as he approached Greenville but he understood that Joe Dirt and the rest of his inbred family needed a place to call home and so at least they have Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop or Bubba's Sushi and Bait Shop or whatever....hell, them Greenville rednecks need a place to call home....some of us fools thought we were making progress but apparently Dunkin Donuts, Cabela's and/or Bass Pro are relegating us to a second or third class city. If only we could have a Saks or House of Bijan on Whitehorse at the entrance to Greenville that would give a great first impression of our town... Edit: BTW, have spent a lot of time in Boston...it sucks
  11. While I'm not a Trump supporter, I have some good news for you mallguy...the election is over tonight so the signs will be coming down and your "tolerant" friends can stop judging you because they saw a sign from a candidate they oppose on their way into our fair city. Maybe we could persuade visitors that Bass Pro Shops is a prestigious guitar store...wake up man, you're in South Carolina, people hunt and fish, more than half of them will probably vote for Trump, and Dunkin Donuts isn't default southern redneck...have you ever been to Boston???
  12. Maybe we could get a mini Cheesecake Factory, that would class us up!
  13. Oops, I left it there. Guess I "took nothing but pictures and left nothing but footprints...." Found this horseshoe in the construction area for the Swamp Rabbit Trail River Street underpass. Wonder if it goes back to horse and buggy days...

    The West End

Finally pulling the plug on Reedy Point... http://upstatebusinessjournal.com/news/downtown-tourism-center-reedy-point-project-canceled/
  16. So has anyone been to the The Playwright? The atmosphere and interior design are excellent but I have been disappointed with the food every time. They need to get it together soon! Also does their main sign bother anyone else? The Y and W in PLAYWRIGHT were installed backwards... the weighted side of the font is to the right and it should be to the left. If you're a font-nerd or graphic designer this will drive you crazy every time you drive past it.
  17. I would say the Arts District is "emerging", not "struggling". Guess it's a glass half full thing...
  18. There are probably other reasons for the selection but is Verdae space cheaper per square foot?
  19. Couldn't agree more...the classic Sticks and Jaundiced Chair Vibe. Hopefully people base their votes on what they know...
  20. Just posting here to see if my comment is legible in the new format, because the comments above are jacked...

    The Rumor Mill

Got nothing to say, just wanted to be the first to comment on the new format. FIRST!!!
  22. Well spoken, hopefully the city fathers/mothers listen...
  23. A SIGN THAT THE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US: Wish Boutique next to the Verizon Store has "Store Closing" signs in the windows. No doubt this will add to the dearth of pink and green boutiques in DT... Seriously though, I've always heard that boutiques are critical to the retail success of a downtown (and apparently shoe stores). Not too worried though, I'm sure it will be replaced by a similar retailer.
  24. Hopefully this is the start of the Poinsett Renaissance.
