  1. What is that "chimney" thing? That's my only comment.
  2. Eventually it is supposed to be the third and largest research building in the research park.
  3. The way I see it is there's basically the NFL and college football in America. The UFL is operating in purgatory. The state may not have its own professional football team, but it has a lot of college football with most large schools having a D-1 team. Are there enough people in the region that aren't already affiliated with a football team, or in other words, is there enough free money floating around to support a professional team in a league perpetually in limbo? IMO, you would have to really love some football to go see the Destroyers. I don't particularly like pro-football, so maybe I'm overly pessimistic. How about the coach they hired...? TD Ameritrade board meetings must have been a sight. "Profits, I want you to bring some strong D! IPO and M&A, get your a$$e$ to the endzone. GO! GO! GO!"
  4. Does anyone see this team or even this league becoming successful? And if you plan to go to Destroyer games, can you explain why?
  5. The tide will be around longer than the tea party. All aboard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  6. They copied the design brick for brick. I can't remember the guy's name that does these drawings, but he should be fired.
  7. The city needs to get someone who doesn't think Norfolk should be a giant history reenactment park. I know these are preliminary designs, but I think they set the mood for what will eventually be built. Everything doesn't have to match. Has anyone seen the design of the new San Francisco terminal? It's amazing. Norfolk couldn't come close to providing the funds for something like that, but that doesn't mean we have to stick with these rehashed buildings. I am underwhelmed by the vision.
  8. The idea of a little cheap carnival parked right there in downtown seems silly. Unless it came and went for festivals only, I don't think it'd be good for the city. In the end, it's not a long-term solution for that spot. If we could support a huge ferris wheel like the London Eye, I'd be all for it.
  9. I don't resent your comment, but it's all bunk. Welfare, as originally mentioned in this thread, was equated with military dollars. That's just not true. There seems to be a general confusion of terms in this place. Also, you cannot paint public sector jobs with such broad strokes. There are certainly performance-based mechanisms in place for the talented to rise vis-a-vis the "incompetent" or "lazy." In fact, some agencies have an "up or out" policy. In the same way, the private sector cannot be generalized as strictly performance-based or as a meritocracy. Anyone in the private sector can recount tales of incompetent bosses that just "get by" by being friendly with people at the top.
  10. I wish more were being done to ORF than additional parking. Hopefully, one of these days, someone will realize that brown is not a smart color choice for long tubular terminals. It's a real bummer taxiing up to those monstrosities when you're flying in from some place that was all glass and steel. Welcome to Norfolk, enjoy your stay!
  11. You have to wonder whether Vegas even wants a pro-sports team. It would kinda be a distraction from the main draw.
  12. I consider them the same thing.
  13. New Master Plan and Future Construction Awesomeness.
  14. There's going to be some kind of presentation about future ODU growth this Friday on campus at 3:00pm. Looks like they're going to show some pictures, and an updated Master Plan. Buildings Forum flyer.pdf
  15. You can get some band-aids and something off the dollar menu.
  16. Do you plan on being injured or sick? It's just a hospital expansion, and apartments/townhomes...
  17. The District @ ODU now has a sky-bridge between the two components. Also, found this development on the ODU homepage. Looks to be a small town house development along 43rd Street. Kinda odd looking in my opinion. It's like Victorian OBX cottage remix, confused suburban design as usual.
  18. I've seen the Superior Ink Condos before, unfortunately his website is giving me a seizure, the pictures flicker. It would definitely be nice to have someone like that here in Norfolk. If only Belmont or Harbor Heights had been designed by someone with this philosophy of design and planning.
  19. Your argument presents a false choice between the DT Norfolk of today and the historic vibrancy of the past. What building in DT Norfolk couldn't be moved to preserve the old density? Architecturally, which "high-rise" was worth the destruction? I'm not suggesting every building should have been preserved. I agree that suburbanization was probably the main contributor to Norfolk's decline, but urban renewal is a lot easier when there is something to actually renew. Looking at all those razed 2 and 3-storied buildings, we can only imagine how they could have been utilized as residences or retail-space, preferably both. Telmnstr's always coming on here telling us how the Rent Reich controls the DT apartment market. I wish we had numbers of how much space was lost. I also think there are a lot of intangibles that were lost to urban renewal(character), but also things were gained($$$) that are hard to factor into a determination of whether DT Norfolk is better or worse. It definitely changed the city, and I still lean toward it being changed for the worse.
  20. I couldn't disagree more with varider, Norfolk is so much less of a city than it could have been. New does not equal better. New equals big, cookie-cutter, and ubiquitous "urban design". The "demolition-happy" phase is a tragedy in the truest sense, in that we can recognize how destructive and foolhardy it was and do nothing to reverse it. Replacing bricks and stone with foam and particle board... This is all a little dramatic, but those pictures are powerful. I remember my folks talking about riding into Norfolk on the bus when it wasn't somehow shameful to ride a bus and Norfolk was the place to go. I guess I'm a bit nostalgic about something I never experienced.
  21. I love that they're so precise. What's next, "land previously used for the urination of animals"?
  22. No, those streets will remain, and the project doesn't go anywhere near 43rd street. The larger part of the project is located between 38th and 39th, with a smaller part located between 39th and 40th. This project is kinda isolated until the actual Village expands that way.
  23. Haha. There's a battle goin' on in the article's comments. Greenum/VBTA vs. Ryto and some other guy.
  24. Ooops. I didn't take varider's age into account, although I'm only 21. Read the book, and watch the movie varider. Don't watch the second one. Va Beach extension will happen first. The base extension will be next. The military is always looking for ways to get more money. Navy goes green...
