The only obstacle I see is that the area where the mobile stage would go is grass, so if it would kill that grass it would be a bad thing. Then again, I have no idea whether mobile stages kill grass.

I suspect the park will be ready by next week. If they had gone ahead and built the stage, I could see it getting incorporated into the Folk Festival, but that would be hard to do as currently constructed. Perhaps the symphony could erect their portable stage there and put on a show in the future.

Extensive irrigation has been installed, not only on the lawn but drip irrigation looks like it's circling just about every plant in the place.

Given the difference in air pollution now versus the 70's, I think we can make it to the 2090's.

What are your thoughts on the final color of the fountain? The rendering suggested the bottom would be blue, like the Fed, but for now everything they have painted is either dark gray or taupe.

Pics really don't do it justice. It is absolutely massive and will be a magnet for events given the ample parking all around it that is totally empty on weekends.

Saw a blurb in this month's Richmond magazine confirming that $3 million of the $6 million Kanawha project is being deferred. However, I walked around the unfinished park last night and was blown away by the scale of it. The amount of green space is tremendous and could really change the whole character of downtown.

Just learned this is not happening. The Junior League owns the Clothes Rack and isn't signed off on this.
-
Of course, that's the Junior League logo on the building.
-
So they're tearing down the Junior League's Clothes Rack building?
-
Judging from the topsoil that is being spread right now, the Kanawha Plaza stage area is going to have to wait until later...

I think there is an empty floor available in Gateway Plaza.

Wonder why they moved Tarrant's all the way to 3rd Street in that map.
-
I really wish they would shut down Staples Mill station and direct all the traffic here.
-
That is mind-blowing. We need a project like that down there to fill in the gap between Rocketts and Shockoe Bottom.

Having watched the progress, I would say they'll be done in a month if they're not building the stage area. All that is left is laying pavers in the big semi-circle, refinishing the concrete in the fountain, erecting two shelter-like structures, and plantings.

Crews started removing the steel panels from the parking deck yesterday and seemed to have made significant progress by this morning.

I agree and think that it would be very attractive to build a westward-stretching version of the Capital Trail all the way to Charlottesville. I've started a new topic to talk about this sort of thing here:
-
This is really off-topic, but there really needs to be a serious effort to make a bike lane to better connect Southside/North Chesterfield to the city. I live in the Bon Air area, and if I want to bike to work I can risk my life in one of three ways: (1) bike up the narrow shoulder-less Cary Street (past the ghost bike commemorating a dead cyclist); (2) bike over Chippenham via Forest Hill Avenue, which is scary enough in a car; or (3) press my luck on Jahnke, which is basically a country road with no shoulder between Buford Road and Chippenham Hospital.
-
I think there's virtually zero chance of that happening.

I know it's flipped, but I flipped it back in my head :). That wall you're showing is perfectly perpendicular to Canal Street. The stage in the drawing is catty corner to Canal. There is a short wall in that area according to the drawing, probably to accommodate the elevation drop there. Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right.
