There's a block party on Westminster between Eddy and Union tonight (the same block as Tazzo and the new wine store). I just walked by, and they are setting up a barbeque and a drinks stand. I don't remember all the details, but I did see that they're gonna have mohitos.

As an addition to the Red Bull Soapbox mention earlier in the thread, I've decided to add some pics. I love speed and racing and even if I don't get to drive one of these contraptions, this thing looks like a lot of fun as a spectator :)

28070013gg2.jpg

Haybales were actually used as a primitive form of spectator protection in the pre-WWII era (and some post-war as well). We're back to basics for that it looks like.

28070030qe0.jpg

Probably similar to something I'd build

Now the fun starts!

William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. Concours d'Elegance Weekend - July 27-29, 2007

Scenic and historic Newport hosts a first of its kind (at least to my knowledge) Concours this July.

Borrowed from a press release in the interest of space:

"The weekend celebration of all things automotive will include legendary drivers, competition cars, and grand classics from all eras. The festivities will take place at the Newport Mansions and will be hosted by The Preservation Society of Newport County, one of the nation's largest private custodians of National Historic Landmarks, including The Breakers (1895), Marble House (1892) and Chateau-sur-Mer (1852), which will host the various Concours events.

Gurney and Sir Stirling Moss, whose attendance was announced earlier, will each receive the first annual William K Vanderbilt, Jr. Awards for Lifetime Achievement at a Racing Legends Dinner on Friday, July 27 at The Breakers. The awards will recognize annually an American and an International auto industry figure. The awards celebrate "Willie K" Vanderbilt's contributions to American motor sport as a World Land Speed Record holder, his 1904 creation of the Vanderbilt Trophy, and his conferring the sanctioning authority for the trophy on AAA. "

Before yall criticize this "racing redneck" for bringing this into local happenings :scared: , this is a fundraising project for the Preservation Society of Newport County.

Honorary Chair of the event is Debi Rahal. She has been involved in charity work for two decades. She is known in the racing community; she is the ex-wife of 1986 Indy 500 winner and 3-time CART Champion Bobby Rahal and the mother of Champ Car Rookie of the Year contender Graham Rahal.

William K Vanderbilt, Jr. Awards for Lifetime Achievement: Dan Gurney and Sir Stirling Moss.

Among the famous racing personalities in attendance include:

  • Richard Atwood - 1970 winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans

  • Bob Bondurant - F1 driver w/ Eagle & Ferrari; Motorsports Hall of Fame of America inductee; well-known driving school owner

  • Nick Craw - Won the most races in America in a BMW; 1977 IMSA GTU champion; Chairman of Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)

  • David Piper - British F1 driver for Lotus 1959-60

  • Janet Guthrie - 1st woman to compete in Daytona 500 & Indy 500

  • David Hobbs - TV commentator, former driver in F1 and Trans-Am Series champion in 1983

  • Johnny Rutherford - 3-time Indy 500 winner; competitor in NASCAR Cup racing and Int'l Race of Champions series; Hall of Famer

  • Peter Windsor - Editor of F1 Racing magazine; noted racing journalist and former F1 team member with Williams and Ferrari

  • George Wintersteen - Driver in F5000 Lotus and successful Corvette Grand Sport car owner in the 1960s

  • Others TBA

From Urban Greens:

This Thursday 5/31 brings one more installment of Urban Greens Food Coop's Movies About Food Series! They're at White Electric at 7 PM.

As with past installments, we'll be watching movies (about food), we'll have information about how you can get involved with Urban Greens Food Coop, and we'll have some snacks. We've got some VERY exciting movies this week. Our Daily Bread in particular is really stunningly beautiful and deeply unsettling, a rare feat for a documentary of its nature. I can't recommend it any more highly, and it's pretty hard to see, so don't miss this opportunity!

Our Daily Bread - Director: Nikolaus Geyrhalter

Welcome to the world of industrial food production and high-tech farming! To the rhythm of conveyor belts and immense machines, the film looks without commenting into the places where food is produced in Europe: monumental spaces, surreal landscapes and bizarre sounds - a cool, industrial environment which leaves little space for individualism. People, animals, crops and machines play a supporting role in the logistics of this system which provides our society's standard of living. "Our Daily Bread" is a wide-screen tableau of a feast which isn't always easy to digest - and in which we all take part. A pure, meticulous and high-end film experience that enables the audience to form their own ideas.

and from the NY Times "In his superb documentary "Our Daily Bread" the Austrian filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter does exactly what [Michael] Pollan proposes: he looks. Much like "The Omnivore's Dilemma," and much like Eric Schlosser's book and Richard Linklater's film of "Fast Food Nation," this documentary is an unblinking, often disturbing look at industrial food production from field to factory. Mr. Geyrhalter has said that he is fascinated by "zones and areas people normally don't see." His fascination is our gain. "Our Daily Bread" can be extremely difficult to watch, but the film's formal elegance, moral underpinning and intellectually stimulating point of view also make it essential. You are what you eat; as it happens, you are also what you dare to watch."

and before it, a short documetary

Vanishing Orchards - Director: Rocco Michaluk

A documentary about the important history and current state of apple farming in Rhode Island.

From rifuture.org (thanks, David!). I don't know anything about this show, but I have seen some cool stuff at Firehouse 13.

The Library Show

June3-30

Schedule

http://www.notaboutthebuildings.com/

There are events Tuesdays thru Fridays.

Check Schedule for more information

Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Friday 2-9 PM

(or later, if there's events)

Saturday: 10 AM - 7 PM

(all events start at 7 PM unless otherwise noted.)

2006 was a big year for libraries in Providence. In January 2006, the Washington Park Branch of the Providence Public Library closed with almost no notice, and five other branches came dangerously close to closing, too. Then in September, RISD opened a brand new library downtown. Libraries are vital centers of information and community.

The Library Show is here to celebrate their importance and demonstrate why they are still necessary. We'll be doing that with live music, writing workshops, book clubs, and movies. And we're also trying to raise money and awareness to keep the branches of the Providence Public Library open (and re-open Washington Park!)

Many types of artists find inspiration at the library, whether it's through research or through the idea of books themselves. The Library Show features art by library-minded artists like William Allen, Mark Binder, Tanisha Mendes, Gunnar Norquist, Andrew Sloan, Mickey Smith, Russell Wolfgang-Smith, Neal Walsh, and The Artist X.

June 7- Opening reception for The Library Show, featuring a performance by storyteller Mark Binder and music by the DJs of BSR.

Architectural Illustration Roundtable Discussion and Exhibit

Thursday June 21st

6:30-8:00 PM

AIA Rhode Island, 158 Washington St., Providence

Providence is home to several internationally renowned architectural illustrators. Come to the new AIA space at 158 Washington Street to see their work, get a behind the scenes look at their unique processes, and hear their perspective (no pun intended) on the role of the image in design today.

Jonathan Kletzien of Studio AMD, Michael O'Beirne, and Bob Bernier will present their work and join in a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Derek Bradford.

Their collective work includes dazzling images you may recognize such as the RISD Chace Center, the Masonic Temple Rennaisance Marriott, the World War II Memorial in Washington DC, and the new green-luxury residences at 40 Mercer in NY.

A multi-media exhibit will follow.

Free and open to the public. Architects will earn 1.5 learning units.

Accessible from the Gallery Night bus departing from Citizen's Plaza (closest stop is the URI Feinstein Center ).
