MIAMI

Black precinct to be museum

A former black police precinct will double as a museum and a learning center for students in Overtown.

BY GLADYS AMADOR

[email protected]

It was built 55 years ago, when segregation was a staple of the South. A ''black'' police precinct from where black officers patrolled the streets of ''Colored Town'' and a ''Negro'' judge heard cases on the second floor.

Closed in 1963 as the Miami police force integrated, the relic of Jim Crow hasn't been used since.

No more. This piece of the past will serve as a memorial to officers who saw segregation's demise -- and also as an educational tool for students in Overtown...

I'm sure that must be an error.

Apparently this revised figure is indeed correct, at least according to the e-mail I received from the city's planning department. A "Substantial Modification" was submitted by Met and the new height called for is now 786 feet. I'm waiting for information from the sales office to see if they are aware of this, or if there are plans to submit another modification.. It is entirely plausible that this is the height of the older revision and they have started advertising the new height before completing the required paperwork with the city. We'll see.

Bomb threat prompts building evacuations in downtown Miami

BY LUISA YANEZ

[email protected]

Hundreds of workers in downtown Miami have been evacuated from their office buildings and traffic rerouted due to a bomb threat called into Washington Mutual bank on Tuesday morning, Miami police said.

As many as five buildings adjacent to the bank at 100 SE Second St. have been emptied, as police are searching floor by floor for any suspicious packages.

The bank had received a call at 9:30 a.m. that a bomb would go off at 10 a.m. The Miami Police bomb squad was quickly sent to the bank to secure the area along Flagler Street and Second Avenue, said police Lt. Bill Schwartz

How about starting a thread about current or planned (possible) area renovations / studies such as the one below. I attended the followup CRA meeting and they discussed other studies some really urgent ones such as 14th street next to the PAC which must be completed (study and work) by PAC opening day.

Many areas are getting cleaned up. Interesting to focus on this separately and they tend to attract businesses and developments. On to the posting:

After receiving a complaint from a representative of a large Miami hotel-condo complex about the horrendous traffic at North Bayshore Drive, the Community Redevelopment Agency has opted to invest $19,000 to produce an independent study.

I think that's a great idea... It would be a great direction to take on the forum. It would also be an excellent way to archive and index all of these studies and proposals for easy retrieval.

Also, if you check the P&C Index and look under "Special Categories", you'll find that I've included the Omni presentation there as well.

Any ideas on a name for this thread?

It would be great to see more brands in the CBD.. If you count Brickell as "downtown", which the Downtown Development Authority does, we have a Four Seasons, a J.W. Marriott (Marriott's ultra luxury brand), Conrad (Hilton's ultra luxury brand, same as the Waldorf Astoria in New York), and a Mandarin Oriental. I also remember reading that Starwood Hotels and Resorts (Sheraton, Westin, St. Regis, etc.) wants to bring a "W" boutique hotel to somewhere in Miami.
