Somewhat deflecting all the bleak economic news of late, here's a bit of encouragement.

Chesterfield's Economic Delvelopment folks and Sabra Dipping Company are groundbreaking today at the Ruffin Mills Industrial Park off I-95 near the Walthall Interchange.

The Sabra company based in Israel produces International foods and will employ 260 by mid 2010.

Wasn't sure where to put this. "Richmond's Most Hideous Buildings" from Style.

I think something like green wall panels, which Burt mentioned as an idea for the First Freedom Center, would work nicely to cover the first few floors of parking of the Riverside on the James buildings.

The Mayor will appoint a task force to review surplus properties. Amont them is the old 6th Street Marketplace which includes Blues Amory on 6th at Marshall Streets.

Development plans for the armory were initiated by Mr. Wilder about a year ago but no progress has been reported.

I'm like Evan -- not sure where to place stories on Richmond's UP pages. Anyway, this has been discussed somewhere. The State will buy the property on south side of E. Franklin between 6th and 7th Streets to build a 1,000-space parking garage. Cost of the structure is estimated at $16M. Let us hope it is well designed with ground-level retail and other amenities.

Cicuit City will go into liquidation:

MSNBC Article:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28691963/

A lot of the local economic news is heart-breaking. Richmond, once a proud seat of big businesses, is suffering. Wellpoint (Anthem Health) is the latest to announce cuts of 1,500 across its system. MeadWestVaco, Genworth, Chesapeake Corp, Qmonda, LandAmerica...and the list goes on and on. Each day brings more bad news.

But the area will rise above it. Perhaps Greater Richmond will not be as "white collar" as in the past, but jobs in all sectors will be created.

Richmond is, and has been, more resilient than many similarly sized metropolitan areas.

I absolutely agree with you. We have pride in the Greater Richmond area which makes more resilient. If our economy can be strong in the past, our economy will be stronger in the future.

Harris Teeter expanding VA presence...

from today's Times-Dispatch

http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/business/...-064803/186584/

maybe this could mean expanding into Richmond?

It is a distribution facility being built in King George County, VA.

I would like to see a Harris Tetter in the Richmond area in the near future.

I would not be surprised if one ends up in the Short Pump area.

Purely speculative, but I wouldn't be surprised if one day Ukrop's was under the Harris Teeter umbrella in some form.

What?!!! Another Carolina take-over of a Richmond business? Should be the other way 'round -- for a change.

It's high time Ukrops abandoned its no-Sunday/no booze policy and faced the competition aggressively and head on.

Meanwhile, HT's distribution center in King George will offer some employment sunshine in Central Virginia.

Here's the unsettling news in today's R-TD:

The first story deals with Qimonda filing for bankruptcy.

Then there's the possibility of Wyeth being bought out by Pfizer:

And, finally, confirmation of job cuts at Mead WestVaco:

Stay tuned for the next posting of upbeat local news. :good:

Like I said, purely speculative and probably wrong.... I'm just thinking that if they ever sold out to someone, Harris Teeter sounds like a better fit than others. As a recent interview with Bizsense reiterates, the current management has no plan to change the Sunday and alcohol policies. I'm okay with the Sunday policy, but I know they could tastefully do a quality wine dept concept (see Wegman's).

Richmond is a major center of law offices, and most of them have plans to expand.

Williams Mullen will occupy 80 to 90% of space in its 15-story tower now rising at 10th and Canal Streets. If growth is anticipated doesn't it seem short-sighted to build a small tower that will be essentially full by the time it's complete?

Now that Richmond has a handsome new Federal Courthouse as well as a growing legal force, a developer might be wise to buy the lot on Broad between 6th and 7th and construct a building to accommodate attorneys and related businesses.
