I got the opportunity to take a tour of the Sandler Center yesterday, and I must say, it is very impressive from the inside. It looks essentially exact to the renderings on CMSS's site, http://www.cmssarchitects.com/sandler_center.php. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take any photos.

But, I can describe some of the things I saw...

The side walls of the theatre were like nothing I'd ever seen before, as you can see in the renderings, they are a network of wooden spindles, rather then just a sheathing of acoustical panels. They contain a screen behind them, that can be adjusted to change how the sound from the stage resonates through the theatre, depending on the type of performance at hand. They seem to have worked around the purple color scheme for carpeting. Also, a sheethe of velvet-similar material wraps each peice of metal railing, rather than the cheaper alternative of simple painting. Another thing that was pretty neat was that the seating area sits atop an open air plenum, so conditioned air rises through a grill under each seat, and is exhausted through the roof, thereby circulating upward past each individual in attendance. Should be noone overheating during a show. The VIP room was pretty amazing also, as it had a balcony and faces what will soon be Tower 2.

There's actually a good possibility that I'll be volunteering as a tour guide myself at the Sandler Center starting Nov. 5.

Hopefully I'll be able to get some pictures up for those who won't be able to make it to a show soon... assuming they let me, of course

Va. Beach gets new performing arts center

All of Hampton Roads can see what the fuss is about when the city's new performing arts center opens next week. Festivities begin with a ribbon-cutting on Thursday morning followed by public tours Thursday and Friday and a gala concert by violinist Itzhak Perlman on Saturday night.

New arts center will bring people and artists to beach

When Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Obendorf heard two local orchestras testing the acoustics in the new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, there were tears welling up in her eyes.

"I felt as excited as I did on the days that my children were born or headed off to college," says Oberndorf. "My husband asked me, 'Why are you crying?'

"I told him they were tears of joy."

I am so tired of these unnecessary negative comments about every single little thing that goes on in the city. These people are seriously against everything. My annoyance, however, was tempered by the fact that this is a great picture. :)

well with photos and the right angles you can really make this new downtown look high class and look like a true downtown for the city. I can't wait till the infrastructure of the area steps it up and also when they drain that little swamp pit to put in a nice lake.

"Town Center is the new downtown developed from scratch in a city that has mostly consisted of suburbs, farms and a resort strip."

this has to be one of the first time's I have heard Town Center and downtown and be talking about the same place ever mentioned in the same article. Looks like VB finally has a downtown, guess the NIMBYs are gonna have to get use to that. I am actually surprised VB hasn't been trying to change the name of their downtown to Uptown. It would fit in with VB's ego to say Norfolk is downtown and VB is uptown.

Thanks for all the coverage of the Sandler Center. It is a neat facility and I've enjoyed every story about it.

If parking is free in VBTC, why do you suppose it can't be free in downtown Norfolk and Richmond? That would be a perfect way to get people back on the streets of old city centers.

Wow, those pictures are amazing! I wish I could see it in person!

As for parking not being free in older cities, it is simply economics. Whatever is in high demand is worth plenty of money. VBTC parking, while free, has some limits. Street parking is now limited to 2 hours in most sections for example...
