Roanoke Stores and Retail

Does anyone know what the delay is with The District at Valley View. It seems as if the area has come to a complete standstill. The new buildings look great, but when are they planning on announcing tenants and do they have an idea as to when these new retailers will open? I thought we would have heard stuff by now!

Well, it's safe to say that threr's not a lot going on with that section of the mall, nor will there be for a while. I guess they're still in the negotiation stage with the targeted retailers, which is a shame. I only know of one tenant upfit that's happening, and that (so far) is for a short-term tenant.

In other news, I just got word that FootActionUSA has closed at Tanglewood. There is officially no place to buy current season name brand sneakers on the south side of town other than Fleet Fleet, and that's a little crazy for a city the size of Roanoke.

I'm not sure what's going on with Valley View. Their most reliable customer base has now been excluded from the mall on prime shopping nights without an escort, and nobody else shows up outside the holiday season. I hope they figure out where to go from here, and soon.

A new grocer will be going in at an old retail center that has seen better days at Melrose and Peter's Creek. The article says it will be a discount grocer. Good news for that area of the city which is underserved. Hopefully it will help revive that retail center significantly.

I visited Ukrops and was quite impressed. The underground parking is a great asset. I realized how much I appreciated it when I left the store and emerged to the surface lot and into the pouring rain. The escalators are a great addition, although I didn't use a cart and didn't get to test out the cart escalater. The lighting is very attractive inside the store. Everything is well presented and just screams, 'Buy me, buy me!' The upstairs food court looked pretty cool and I was very impressed that it extended outside with a patio and 2nd floor deck with tables for dining. My mom also loves the store. I can't wait until the entire shopping center is complete.

I also checked out Wine Gourmet, which is a nice addition to the wine/beer retail scene. I feel that there could have been more Virginia Wines and the beer selection could be a little more extensive, but a nice variety is available nontheless.

Anyone who can make it should attend their grand opening celebration this Saturday the 8th. They will have free tastings from many Virginia Wineries as well as live music.

As of this date, whats with "The District at Valley View"? Where are all of the "upscale" Short Pump

type stores that Roanoke desperately needs to keep the women from leaving town? Granted, on a visit to Short Pump there are many stores there that seem redundant such as a Crate & Barrell and

Williams-Sonoma, etc but why can't Roanoke land a Nordstrom Rack? Other than Davidsons, I can't find a decent suit anywhere in this town! Its crazy so many women travel to shop, but currently I don't blame them! Thankfully, as a male shopping is not my major pursuit! What was that crazy poll the Roanoke Times did about what stores you would like to see come here? Are they serious?

It will be interesting to see how it turns out. I have always thought that Walmart was sort of misplaced there and that area has a lot of potential due to it's location. I wish something like a Williams-Sonoma could be put in there, but I have my doubts.

A subject nobody seems to have mentioned in a while is the District at Valley View. I was there today for the first time in a while and it seems so vacant! It looks like Fancy That has opened and they now have little outdoor speakers installed pumping out some music, but otherwise it doesn't look like there's any progress going on there. What has happened to it, are they still going to be putting in any good stores there?
