I'm a grammarian. I'm also old-ish. The (writing) style books of yore--MLA, Chicago, etc.--didn't allow for such an omission (i.e., of "THE") at the beginning of a sentence when directly preceding a definite article. It's likely optional these days, as grammar standards have been reduced to the lowest common denominator.   

As for your rather breathless objection, I don't know which is worse:  your pedantry or mine. 

I think I'll go with yours.
