Lidl committed to downtown Greensboro grocery store

Lidl is coming to downtown Greensboro. Once Lidl opens, downtown Greensboro will have two grocery stores. The other is Deep Roots Market on the north end of downtown which resembles a mini Whole Foods with a deli, bakery, produce and organic food products. Deep Roots is higher priced. Lidl will provide affordable groceries to downtown residents. Construction on 150 apartments by the Lidl site could begin in September as the developer closes on the site for apartments and retail. The Lidl site directly borders the downtown greenway. This will become the first urban Lidl in the state.

Looks like the Lidl store is not coming.  Hopefully another grocer entertains a downtown store!

They said they would consider the site again but there would need to be a new timeline. Apparently they found more contamination in the ground. But for now the deal is off but not dead. Hopefully they'll redesign the layout of the store and the building itself to fit a more urban environment. Hopefully something mixed-use working with another developer.

The City should have been tested and cleared that land and other lots that had been emptied for decades before this setback in that Downtown Area! East Greensboro can't catch a break when it comes to the soil being toxic or something compared to West Greensboro.

I agree. They should have made it development ready before a developer came in.

Here is more news about the current Lidl contract being terminated bit the grocery store on the site is not dead.

this sounds like the city dropped the ball and did not communicate well with NC DHEQ on this brownfield.   It does sound like Lidl is still interested in this site but it may be awhile.
