Meh. This is a little underwhelming considering the historic homes that will be razed.

Yeah... though I'm happy to see the campus expand and add housing I was hoping for something better than this.  Looks like it fell out of the burbs.

Yeah, too bad they have to tear down some perfectly good houses.  Would have been nice if they could have used the empty land behind the pumping station instead.

Some good news on this project — UofM is changing plans "significantly:" https://dailymemphian.com/section/business/article/17859/u-of-m-change-deloach-housing-the-central-plan

I'm all for improving and growing the campus and the greater University District, but this plan just ain't it...

An update on the Deloach apartment complex pushback:

U of M plans less-dense housing on Deloach, apartments at Park campus

https://dailymemphian.com/section/metroeducation/article/18416/university-of-memphis-plans-to-build-housing-on-deloach

Quote

The University of Memphis got the message that dense-apartment development is not welcome on Deloach Street on the north end of campus.

Its plan now is to demolish the nearly dozen homes it owns on the street and build a much lower density mix of single-, two- and three-bedroom units for graduate students.

My issue wasn't so much the density as it was the architecture. The rendering looked like it could just as easily have been built in the suburbs. It will be interesting to see the revised plans for the stretch.

That's criminal for the university to do... even more than a private developer. They are neighbors to that area of the city which IMHO is an absolutely beautiful residential area.

National search underway for developer for Racquet Club site.

From the Daily Memphian (subscription)-   9.3 acres of the site to is what is to be redeveloped with (hopefully) the idea to tie in the office towers/Brookhaven Circle etc into one large district.   2 acres closer to the Lexington Condos are being sold to those developers for more condos.

https://dailymemphian.com/subscriber/section/neighborhoodseast-memphis/article/16680/racquet-club-east-memphis-sanderlin-superblock

"The owners of the old Racquet Club property have retained JLL real estate brokerage firm to launch a national search for the kind of developer that will build an “extremely high-quality project.”

The vision for a “superblock” has been discussed several years for the area bounded by Poplar, Mendenhall, Sanderlin and White Station. The potential, Wohrman said, could be “transformative” and “catalytic” not just for the district but for Memphis.

The superblock vision is built on the realization that the block surrounding the Racquet Club already has nearly all the ingredients for a dynamic district.

The adjacent Clark and iBank towers hold, for Memphis, a massive amount of office activity. Dozens of restaurants are inside or on the edge of the block. The block hosts two substantial grocery stores, a Kroger and Whole Foods. And Malco’s Paradiso multi-screen movie theater anchors the entertainment.

Just east of the tennis club property, at the southwest corner of Sanderlin and White Station, are the Lexington’s 54 condo units. Lexington developers George Bryan and Michael Turley recently exercised an option to buy 2.3 acres of what had been a nearly 12-acre tennis club property.

Hyde Foundation buys 15 acres on Walnut Grove for mixed-use development

Hyde Foundation buys 15 acres for mixed-use development by Derwin Sisnett and Nora Jendoubi - Memphis Business Journal (bizjournals.com)

"The Hyde Family Foundation recently purchased 15 acres near Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library to support a major commercial development.

Memphis-based Maslow Development Inc. is leading the project with Hyde's support. Maslow partners Derwin Sisnett and Nora Jendoubi said in a statement that they are working on a "school-centered, mixed-use development" for the 15 acres but are "very early in the design process."

The property, 3100 Walnut Grove Road, is currently vacant. Hyde spent $1.57 million on it to support "the continued civic revitalization of the Binghampton neighborhood — a neighborhood of focus for the Foundation," Hyde Family Foundation president Teresa Sloyan said."

Some of that vision can be seen on Maslow's website. The "Lighthouse Project" portion of the site describes a 15-acre, mixed-use development with a school, mixed-income housing, and workforce development opportunities. Hyde purchased the property under the entity Lighthouse Community Ecosystem LLC."

I like this design — it's modern but still retains some uniformity with the red brick found on most of the campus' buildings.

Filming studios in Memphis would be a game changer for the economy.  There are lots of films that depict memphis and are not filmed here we have so many buildings of character and this city deserves some movie production.

I really would like to see these apartments open to regular citizens instead of just student housing, there is a lack of descent housing in this area for regular citizens.  Its either country club, college, or the hood.  The university of memphis sits at a very interesting location in the city.

It is.  This isn't the University doing it.  The article says the apartments will be "geared towards students and young professionals."

Most of those apartments require you to be a student.  Maybe these will be different but the last 5 sets were not and they are not owned by the U of M.
