Richmond International Airport

Eric, I don't want to belabor the point, but doesn't it look to you like the walkways and stairs from the parking garages open right onto the upper level roadway making it necessary for pedestrians to cross against traffic?

Burt... I don't think it will cause to much trouble. At Dulles, one must cross the lower level roadway from the parking lots to get into the airport and vice versa. It's pretty much a non-issue there. And Richmond doesn't have nearly the level of hussle and bustle.

Yeah, I'm sorrry Burt, I must have misunderstood your question. People who park in the parking garages will have to cross traffic, but that's pretty standard. I thought you were talking about having to...well, I didn't know exactly what you were asking at the time, but I hope your answer is clear now. I appologize again.

A glitch in one of the Security X-Ray gizmos caused delays at RIC on one of the busiest travel days of the year. One of the machines at Concourse B went down some time Wednesday and repair personnel and necessary equipment had to be flown in. The job took longer than anticipated and was finally in working order by Thanksgiving morning. For a while, some travelers headed for the 4 airlines on Concourse B were sheparded thru the Concourse A security lines then escorted back to their flights on B.

Despite the problem, the longest delay was 27 minutes. More than 6000 fliers were slightly inconvenienced Wednesday, and about half that number on Thanksgiving Day before repairs were completed.

The airport has increased in traffic so much this year, that it is asking the TSA for an increase in screeners....

Airport Seeking Screeners Due to Growth

"The head of Richmond International Airport is seeking more federal security screeners amid worries that recent record-breaking growth could create passenger logjams......

The airport chief wants the TSA to approve 130 screeners to inspect baggage and passengers before JetBlue Airways starts service to New York in late March and to Boston in early April.

The six new round-trip flights are expected to further swell passenger numbers, which increased 17 percent to 262,567 in October over the same month last year. The airport has experienced a nearly 23 percent rise in passenger traffic since July 1 compared with the same period in 2004........."

Our friend Chip at RTD reports today about the need for additional Security checkers at RIC - especially in anticipation of Jet Blue's 6 daily roundtrips beginning in late March.

Chip says that 263,000 passengers used the terminal in October - up about 21% over the previous October.

is there somewhere where we can find the passenger counts for each month this year? every month has seen double digit growth. We'll be close to 3,000,000 passengers a year this year! With JetBlue coming to town, I bet we finally surpass it!

whoopps! Found it!

Good! then post it! But I'll have to read it later as it's almost time for me to be somewhere else.

I think ORF is considerably over the 3Million mark, so we have a lot of catching up to do.

wow! since Airtran entered the market, passenger counts have soared...I expect it to only increase more with JetBlue's arrival!

By October of this year, we already met last year's total passenger count.

So let's say we take the average passenger increase since Airtrans arrival (23%) and combine that increase with last year's Nov. and Dec. numbers....

November 2005 (est.)= 268,000+

December 2005 (est.)= 268,000+

so this year, we could be looking at over 2.9 million passengers in 05 compared to over 2.4 million in 2004!

Good to hear and ORF should hopefully be getting Jetblue too! Too bad HR doesn't have just one airport

Ahh well I'm happy yall might get JetBlue. I'm also soooo proud of you that you have 2 airports! Back in Richmond though, people are focused on how much fares have dropped recently, as well as the double-digit, record breaking growth the airport is experiencing. Now to mention the fantastic airport expansion which will really put RIC on another level...

  • 2 weeks later...

good Q&A article about RIC in the paper...

Fare Game at Richmond International Airport

After more than a decade of recruiting, the airport, backed by the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Richmond Partnership, finally landed a low-fare airline in AirTran Airways. Even before AirTran started flying here in June, prices started plummeting.

The fare relief was followed by more good news: Another discount carrier, JetBlue Airways, announced plans to fly between here and New York and Boston this spring.

How did the airport and its backers do it? What's it going to take to continue the momentum? And what should air travelers expect in 2006?

Thanks for pointing out that article Coupe! That was a good read. Looks like we can expect Southwest Airlines to land in Richmond only after they go to Charlotte first according to Jon Mathison. I don't particularly like that idea, but he may be right. He did allude to the fact that bigger and better things will come next year if Richmond is successful in supporting JetBlue! He wouldn't say what those things are, but I'm very excited about the airport right now. Things are really looking up and I hope this is nothing more but a launch pad for even better things to come. Luring in JetBlue and AirTran were two great additions onto the airport...now if we can get a runway or two expanded and some real international flights as well as some west coast destinations, I think Richmond International will be sitting pretty!

There's another interesting story by our friend Chip in today's RTD about maintenaince of the runways in winter weather. The last time anybody can remember the airport being closed down due to weather was about six years ago. He points out that the longest runway is 9100 feet and there are a couple of others exceeding 6000 feet. All the runways have 1000 foot clearances at each end. I believe a 747 would require a 10,000+ foot runway, wouldn't it, Eric?
