I don't mean to be a bee in your bonnet, but the "movie and tv" studio at Universal is being phased out almost completely. However the park is MILES away from a 6 Flags, which is more of a local destination.

I never go to the theme parks, I really have no interest in them. However the impact on the Orlando community is high with Universal. Even if they pay people rediculously low compared to the living expenses in Orlando.

Those houses are pretty cool and cost a mint. I cannot see anyone really willing to pay $300,000+ for a nontraditional smaller office space. It works well for businesses like Dr. and Dentist offices, but they're put to better use as homes. Not to mention the residents of Thornton Park have tried to block such happenings for years. You won't be able to bulldoze them without a fight from historical societies either. They will be houses for a long, long time.

I agree with Tim, lets not get too off topic here. We were discussing Ivanhoe and I mentioned the neighborhood. Didn't mean for this to happen.

Your kidding right? In most cases it's the BANK that pulls the plug.

I'm not against building highrises, I like them a lot. However, where I have a problem is rampant building that it seems so many want. If you just go an building 10 of them your passing the demand and not looking back. You have to space yourself from building too much too fast to building the perfect amount at a pace this city needs. My family is native Orlandoans, my granfather moved here in '52 and has been here since. I don't think it's as much a small town mentality as it is too much growth too fast. When you start building that fast your going to cause prices to drop heavily and well most these projects will go bankrupt. For the long term success of Downtown Orlando you have to build at the pace the city will let you.

Yes, but many have lived there for years and pull to not let it happen. Most the areas around the lake are zoned as residential and government if you look at it. Several towers around lake Ivanhoe will not happen for a very very long time, if ever.

There will never be very many towers around Ivanhoe, maybe on the east side a few, but the houses and neighborhood of college park will not lead to it. Not to mention the land is a lil soft.
  9. The Devil Rays have already talked about moving to Orlando in the past. If we built a stadium, they would take the risk. Next season they have a chance to opt out of the Trop lease. There are a lot of northerners here that are fans of other teams and that is the reason why the Devil Rays (the record and locale doesn't help either) have had such a hard time building a fan base. I think that they would have similar attendance in Orlando and they would have great growth if (big IF in the AL East) they ever put together a consistent team. The difference between baseball and basketball is the event. Basketball games you go and watch. Baseball in most cases is outdoors (or should be IMO) and on summer nights when kids are out of school, etc. They have entertainment in between innings, more relaxed, etc. There has been talk of removing the lower area of the Citrus Bowl and making it a new "Japenese Super Arena" outdoor setting. That is a venue that can retract from football to baseball without looking like a cookie cutter stadium of the 70s. Will it happen, probably not. The funding should be focused on the PAC and Arena 1st. No doubt in my mind that the Devil Rays owners would consider Orlando if they tried to move or Orlando made it available. The market in St. Pete stinks and as long as Steinbrenner is the owner of the Yankees, his pull in Hillsborough is enough to keep them out of there. (sorry this is all over the place, gotta run to a lunch meeting)
  10. As nice as the plan sounds, the project will not cost $900M once it is run by the city/county further. I don't expect hotels on site, etc. The impact fees alone will scale this project down.
  11. I've heard all three are definites so long as the county passes it by a 5 of 7 vote.
  12. Exactly, Go to a D-Rays game when NY or Boston is in town its like Yankee Stadium/Fenway - South.
  13. Could baseball survive in Orlando? Maybe. If the team was good...Which in this market would be hard to generate revenue. The thing is we have 2 MIllion people, however, you must remember that a good percentage are in the service industry. Which leads to working nights and weekends. One other point almost every MLB ballpark has cheap tickets. I went to a Reds game a few weeks ago and got 17 dollars for 3rd base line tix about 15 rows up. Their outfield seats were 8 bucks. Outside Fenway, AT&T Park, and Wrigley most MLB parks arent selling out every night
  14. Tourt Tax plan revealed...with the backing of all hoteliers, themepark high ups, etc. ALl we need is 5 of 7 votes and all three venues will get funding! http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/...eadlines-orange ://http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news...nes-orange
  15. There will be a moderated debate 5pm Tuesday on 740AM with Mike Bianchi and Mike Thomas. Should be good listening...
  16. No problem Dale Praha, I will admit I may not be the biggest "arts" guy, but I do go to plays every now and then. Further, my brother is very active in the theater scene in the city. Bob Carr is a wee bit outdated and should be upgraded or rebuilt, lets not fool oursleves here. There is only one city in this country that people REALLy travel to to see a performance, and its NYC. Orlando will NEVER get that respect because Disney World/Universal casts the cartoonish look to the city. I am in no way against a PAC, I just feel that we need to address what we have already before we go jumping into what we don't have (IE - Arena, Citrus Bowl, PAC in that order)
  17. Riiiight, people would love to live downtown without entertainment options...The fact of the matter is there is an option now for entertainment for those who live downtown 41 nights a year. The condos might not be directly related to the Magic in anyway, but having a professional sports team avail gives people an exciting option and will ultimatley attract more people in the long run. Those condos just aren't going to sell themselves after awhile Further, I am all for a new performing arts center, but how is that more benficial to the city? Ask the average resident how many times they have been to the Orena for a Magic game, compared to Bob Carr for a play or music show? I guarentee it would be very disproportionate. Just my 2 cents...
  18. I'd like to keep the arena in the downtown corridor, making it easier for everyone to have access. But at this point, I'll put it anywhere...
  19. I have a website that I update when freszh news is out about a new arena. It is in support of raising the Orange county Tourist Tax. Check it out at www.Orlando-Arena.com. In no way is this an advertisment, I am making no money off of this, just trying to garner support.
