  1. Against contraception. You can be a good Catholic and "control birth" all you want, as long as you're not interfering with the act itself and its natural outcome. But there are likely not a few bishops who don't have a problem with contraception.
  2. So I suppose we can expect some significant landscaping--more like cliffscaping--between the hotel and the river once the exterior work is done.
  3. Slightly off-topic: Do we have a handy inventory of mill redevelopments? And are all the old mills, minus Poe (RIP), vacant, under development, or repurposed? I'm thinking one of them is still used for some non-textily purpose(?)
  4. Yes---pretty sure it's now Brooklyn Pizza. Red Barn was there from the mid-to-late 70's until, I would say, at least the mid-80's. Maybe longer, but I moved away and by the time I moved back, it was gone. It was very popular throughout my HS days.
  5. The Better'n'sex post spurred me to search for a Greenville restaurant whose name I had forgotten, and up popped this Journal article from 3 years ago. Talk about nostalgia! https://greenvillejournal.com/eat-drink/remembering-one-time-stars-greenville-culinary-scene/ I can't believe they'd mention the Red Baron without actually including it in the list. Off the top of my head, I would also include the Plaza Pharmacy, which had a great diner; and the Red Barn, whose bldg still exists on E. North, a little east of Pleasantburg/291, just before it turns all residential. Red Barn was a sub-sandwich place (similar to Sub Station II, but much better) that also made a really good pizza.
  6. Clearly the name hasn't been a deal-killer in these other places. How'd Greenville get on this list, ahead of so many other, to me more obvious, cities? And Savannah, for that matter.
  7. My wife worked in the jewelry business years ago in Georgia, and of course her employer asked where her engagement ring came from. When she said Hale's, she instantly had a certain credibility. What that said to me is that Hale's isn't any ordinary jeweler. They were then a destination, and I assume they are still today. I suspect they neither need nor want to be in a high-traffic area. Random browsers probably detract from the aesthetic they are trying to create. Or so it would seem to me. It's been years (and years...) since I've been there, but wasn't there a interior door between Jack Runnion and Hales at their Haywood rock-building location? That would have served them well, given Jack Runnion's clientele. Looks like the location of Smith & James is the same strategy updated.
  8. This would be a good time to try to work out a redesign of that awful intersection with Church St.
  9. Is the Wyche site an improvement over the corner of Church & E. North? Obviously, whatever UCB wants is what matters in this case; but the lot behind their current building is over 250' deep, and a little over 150' wide (from Church St.). Lotta room there. You could wedge in a Bowater-style garage with a building with a decent footprint, and own North & Coffee St. Corners.
  10. Following up my Blue Bloods comment. I'm watching "Last Ship," which has long been recommended to me, but never got around to watching until now. Early on in the pilot episode, there's a transitional aerial shot of the Navy base at Norfolk, complete with pretty obviously desert mountains decorating the background! I guess they'll use whatever footage is on hand to get from one scene to the next.
  11. When I graduated from college, it was SCN, Banker's Trust, C&S and Greenville's own Southern Bank. All now long-digested by Wells-Fargo, BoA, & Suntrust/Truist. Then there were also the S&L's--Greenville had the state's two largest, First Federal and Fidelity/American Federal. First Federal went to BBT/Truist, but I can't remember what happened to Am Fed. SCN was largest, though, but still had not cracked 1 billion in assets. NCNB was only couple or 3 billion. Pre-dereg., of course. How times (and prices!) have changed.
  12. Wyche clearly doesn't require AA office space, given where they are now. And their old building seemed to be kind of a mish-mash of parts. But they do seem to like being the sole occupant of whatever building they occupy. And they seem to like being in that part of town. I've got no predictions, but it makes me wonder: any possibility they'd begin the transformation of the area between old Bowater and the Church St. Bridge with a new building of their own? Is any of that old Post office facility available or otherwise ready to be redeveloped?
  13. My wife and I were watching Blue Bloods this evening, specifically Season 10, Episode 11 "Careful What You Wish For." About halfway through, there was a 3-5 second shot of the Old Chamber of Commerce Building, tilting up from street level to the top of the building. It was definitely that building, because you can see Soby's building over to the right. For all I know, the shot could be stock footage from Leatherheads or Bstrd Out of Carolina, but, whatever the case, I find it interesting that a show that's set and filmed in Manhattan saw fit to use Greenville footage as a scene transition. Does Greenville still serve as a filming location on occasion (ergo "fresh" footage), or was this likely just really old footage?
  14. Yeah, I was a little off (to say the least). There was a Community Bank at that building at E. North and Broadus. The building was actually built for them. And I'm almost positive it was an attempt by a Laurens bank to make headway into Greenville. I seem to remember that an acquaintance's father was recruited to run their Greenville incursion. BUT, it all happened in the mid-70's. I found an advertisement for Community Bank in the News archives from May 30, 1976.
  15. Are you thinking of Community Bank--out of Laurens, I think--that opened up an office downtown across the street from the green tile buiiding at the tip of the Gateway site? I'm guessing that was late 80's, but my memory's a bit dim on those details.
  16. You're becoming unhinged. But, in a (probably vain) attempt to reassure you, I'm not a Trumpist and, like SMSRedux, I was addressing the judicial process. Maybe think before you type.
  17. While I think the current location of the zoo has lots of plusses, I haven't been there since before my AARP card came in the mail a few years ago. I wonder if being on that hillside makes it too difficult for lots of older folks to walk.
  18. It'd be nice if eventually this parking lot were replaced with a line of architecturally complementary storefronts/lofts to balance the small-town main-street-ness of this area.
  19. I have to confess that I love the kind of artwork used in this video. A similarly-decorated dust jacket on an old book is an almost guaranteed sale when I'm browsing used bookstores.
  20. So, would you advocate the death penalty? It's in play for treason, you know. And good luck getting a treason conviction on what, 18 states now? Sorry, not going to take that bait. Been down that road too many times to think you don't know exactly what I'm talking about.
  21. How is submitting oneself to the judgment of the courts seditious? If it's truly frivolous, it'll be tossed out. The courts know how to deal with frivolity. And seriously, treason and/or sedition? As they say, what's good for the goose is good for the gander: how is this substantively different than the variously creative and unremitting attempts to overturn the 2016 election?
  22. Look. You know full well--or if you don't, you should know--that (while you're correct that these people don't like the result) they are pursuing a specifically constitutional claim. I get it that you don't think it has any merit. No, more than that, you undoubtedly think it's insane. So does one of my sons. But, insane or not, they're following court procedure. So how is your reasoning any different from what you accuse of them: you're advocating for treason because you don't like the way they're using the Courts. And anyway, it what way is your rep. making war on the U.S. or giving aid and comfort to the U.S.'s enemies? A bit difficult to take you seriously on this point.
  23. Looks like they've reduced the height by two floors, based on the renderings a few posts earlier on this thread.
  24. Looks to me like they want to remove it altogether. Maybe something big involving Canal and the old Capri's site. They couldn't align anything with Wade Hampton without destroying part of the neighborhood behind Canal, too, unless they make a double dog-leg, which is unlikely.
