  1. I have no doubt this will move forward but is it going to take 8 to 10 years to build? Little sarcasm there but with exception to Project Slugger which went up pretty quickly, the construction process of every major downtown development in recent years in Greensboro has dragged and I can't place my finger on exactly why that's the case. Its so frustrating and it kills momentum when projects take an unusual amount of time to get off the ground and I'm talking about after the ground breaking. It took 3 to 4 years for construction of the Hampton Inn and Suites to be completed which is crazy for a small 6 story hotel. I mean what the hell? Projects go up quickly elsewhere in the city and even downtown projects in nearby peer cities tend to go up pretty quickly. There was excitement when it was announced about the Westin going up. But its been under construction for so long, when it finally does open, not many are going to be paying attention or even care. Someone brought up the greenway. They are finally beginning construction on the final leg but its taken about 2 decades to build. By the time something happens on the News and Record property, I'll probably be at retirement age by then.
  2. Three historic Triad hotels. Two of which had names linked to the confederate past in the south. The King Cotton Hotel - Greensboro Robert E Lee Hotel - Winston-Salem The original O'Henry Hotel - Greensboro
  3. For some reason it seems as though the city/westin parking deck is not quite complete as well.
  4. City leaders even today say the Westin will go up. I think the whole deal was complicated due to it being a city/private partnership. There were lawsuits and unforeseen things in regards to the property itself. Like almost everything downtown Greensboro construction is slow for some reason or another. People forget it took 4 plus years for the Hampton Inn to be completed after construction began and its only a 6 story hotel. They were digging around in the dirt for two years before steel at the Tanger Center began to rise.
  5. Saw this on Fox 8 News yesterday. The future AC Hotel looks really good at night. The folks building the Westin on the other side of downtown can learn from the architects who designed the AC Hotel. This is what a downtown hotel should look like.
  6. "The Quarter" New Orleans style cocktail bar opens tonight in downtown Greensboro's Southend on Lewis Street. Ironically around the corner from Fat Tuesday which is a New Orleans inspired destination chain of frozen cocktail bars usually located in tourist destinations. The Quarter is located next to Boxcar Barcade and across the street from SouthEnd Brewing. Btw this building along with a large portion of South Elm Street in downtown Greensboro was used as a filming location for the horror movie Hellraiser III which was filmed in the early 1990s featuring Pinhead. I still remember the scene of the police car exploding at the intersection of Elm and Market right at the corner of the Jefferson Standard building which was clearly visible in the movie. The picture on the bottom is a clip from the movie. Inside scenes were also shot.

  8. No that was a photo a found that I did some editing on that I took before the signage went up.
  9. The last leg will be the most expensive and most attractive section of the greenway and will include a boardwalk of sorts next to a natural creek running through downtown.
  10. They are suppose to erect the hotel in early 2024.

  12. Because of the success of the downtown trolley, the pilot program is being extended until June. I think the city will figure out a way to keep it permanent. https://greensboro.com/news/local/greensboro-hopper-trolley/article_06fd4510-9e8b-11ee-9dd1-df44e0dbe2d9.html#tracking-source=home-top-story

  15. Former Greensboro mayor Robbie Perkins has ideas in to how to attract more development and office space downtown. " Perkins sees health care, technology and the biosciences as areas of growth for downtown office space" https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2023/12/15/greensboro-jaiyeoba-marvin-price-robbie-perkins.html
  16. Greensboro city manager says the city is looking to build a large live music venue, a soccer stadium and or an arena downtown. He said since downtown doesn't have a convention center it needs more venues to attract people downtown. He didn't mention how they would be funded exactly but my guess is through hotel/motel tax eventually under the umbrella of who ever manages the coliseum and Tanger Center. "He envisions a future downtown entertainment district that includes the existing First National Bank Field where the Greensboro Grasshoppers play as well as a soccer stadium, a music hall or arena and a food hall." https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2023/12/14/tanger-center-coliseum-westin-soccer-tai-jaiyeoba.html

  20. Cocktail bar called Muddle is opening downtown.
  21. It has been said that Lithium, which is used in EV batteries, is the new oil. What is interesting is that North Carolina ranks as one of several states in having one of the largest deposits of lithium in the United States. Looking forward it will be interesting to see how that will affect North Carolina's economy decades to come. Look at what oil did for Texas. The lithium deposits are in part a reason why Toyota selected North Carolina for its North American battery plant.
