  1. That's great! I noticed the spot south of Stellas is going to be a restaurant. No further deets, will probably be on the next PC agenda
  2. If not solar for the dump they should do a multi field development. I know this was suggested a long time ago. There is a lot of money in traveling leagues and would be awesome with it's proximity to downtown. I would think the EPA would poo poo it, I thought I heard the cap was five feet thick?
  3. If you're referring to the land between Wealthy/Butterworth and the river, that's a capped landfill that will probably never get developed, unfortunately. Fulton/Market or on the southern part of the amphitheater site would be good, looks like this would be 1/8th the size of the Shedd
  4. Seven to ten years down the line? That makes me very doubtful it will happen. Why do they keep wanting to put it in Muskegon? That's a DeVos thing right? I'm not hating on skee-town, but GR would be able to support this much better (hotels, restaurants, etc). Yeah, aquariums are cool (better than zoos) but are people really going to come to W. MI just to go to the aquarium? I feel like when people do touristy trips to Chicago it's the museums, downtown, navy pier AND the Shedd. It would certainly add to our list of things to do. If anywhere, put it on the river and make a portion of it so you can see into the river. And downtown too, NOT millennium park, it would cost a couple hundred million just to update all the infrastructure leading out there because it's in horrible shape. I would also hate to see the meadows paved over with asphalt.
  5. I think the opioid epidemic and covid have also contributed quite a bit as well. A lot of people turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with covid and the overdose numbers were already insane. I personally know several people that got hooked on opiates, lost everything and became homeless. Most are clean now thank god, but if someone doesn't want to or can't get sober, there's not really anyone that change that
  6. I get the feeling that GR may be the next Columbus, Nashville, Raleigh, etc. There are still a lot of people moving here from across the country and word is starting to catch on. It wouldn't be the best as far as housing prices go unless we see some boom in new development, but it would be great for the growth of the metro and city
  7. I feel like Houston is the epitome of a car centric city. I believe it started booming in the 60's, so that makes sense. What do they have... four or five interstate rings around the city? Gross. Detroit is very car centric, but started booming much earlier in the 1910s and 1920s
  8. I would rather not have that place there at all, but I read in some minutes awhile back that current little park there is public and they were going to try to make it more open for people. Maybe that's changed? Has anyone heard any updates on the Rockford building at the old Circuit West site or the buildings at the old funeral home? I think Rockford and WODA will get them done, but it just feels like it's been awhile. Maybe it's difficult to find subs at the moment?
  9. Judging by the cars, I would say this is the 70s? It looks like the businesses on the W side of Monroe just kinda had their butt pointed to the river. It was heavily industrial and I think most of the cool buildings were preserved, but it would have been cool to see the entirety of 840 was preserved, I never realized there was that massive of a manufacturing building in GR The archives are looking to digitize as much as they can, but there's just waaaay too much stuff and too few staff
  10. The archives posted this photo, not sure when it was taken, but wow North Monroe has come a long way! It will be cool to see how this continues to grow especially with (hopefully) a tower (or two) Did The Boardwalk building used to go all the way from Monroe to Division?
  11. I was thinking we'll need someone to get an updated skyline shot at some point. The new spectrum building on Michigan and the new ramp will probably be visible too
  12. I really wish they would, that and the parcels just south of them. That whole stretch between the river and Plainfield is pretty depressing. Hopefully this will help continue the growth north. Parks and residential all the way up to riverside would be awesome Super random question, does anyone know if that Marine Corps building has been used since COVID? It sure doesn't seem like it is, they don't even bother to cut the grass
  13. That garage looks almost full, that's great for downtown. I wonder how many spaces will be reserved for residents? I would think all the ramps around there are pretty near capacity at times. The city could build a ramp and sell the air rights or partner with a developer like the last two ramps. Hopefully higher than 22 stories though, the area's starting to fill up
  14. That is really sad. I think Ottawa Impact saying these are "grooming events" only makes certain people feel more emboldened. It's pretty bad when you have a group of church leaders publicly coming out against your stances. I honestly don't think the majority of Ottawa county agree with OI. The Holland Sentinal has been really good at calling them out on their BS (Mods, please delete if too political, I don't wanna be that guy, but facts are facts)
  15. Yeah I always thought higher end bowling alley would do great outside of central downtown. Wangers and The Clique are great, but pretty dive-y. I haven't tried the one at Amway, but that seems a little more like a novelty. This looks like Revel and Roll and with that many activities may be more well suited for the burbs.
  16. That's what I was thinking/hoping. Maybe something similar to those small infill projects on W. Fulton? It doesn't seem to be the same person though
  17. I think that may have been the garage to this property, if you look on GIS it has frontage on First too
  18. The house at 513 Stocking was torn down, anyone have any details? The demo permit says redevelopment. It doesn't look like any of the surrounding properties were sold, although some seem in poor shape and ready to be razed
  19. Another conceptual image... there's those buildings on the DeVos site again. If I had to guess I would say a hotel, residential and a new tower for a growing GR company. I thought maybe they had thought of moving the hotel at DeVos Place, but I think the whole point of that was to have it AT DeVos The property south of the RR tracks and Wealthy is owned by the city and not currently for sale, but I think it would be soon after the amphitheater gets built. I did hear of a possible project at the surface lot at Market & Wealthy, but I think that may be dead. I also heard the city is looking to acquire the Gelock property on the river. I would assume they would make a connection to the Oxford Trail and Millennium Park
  20. This is great! I hope this is the first of many projects for Mark!
  21. Yes, there is, hence the un-natural looking shape to it. I always though Mt. Mercy would be a good spot. There's plenty of room. It's owned by the housing commission so probably won't change hands ever. I never really see anyone at Sweet St. park, but IIRC selling city park (or golf course) land now requires ballot approval and that would probably be a hard sell
  22. Great shot! The area 2 & 3 surface lots are just itching to be redeveloped
  23. Yup, and the geography and Heritage Hill help with that. We kind of have a long North/South DT with nodes starting to stretch E/W like Michigan, Fulton, Bridge, etc. I consider Leonard to the DT market actual "downtown" and it continues to grow N/S. I'm curious if this will spur any development across the river. GV won't do anything, but there's a lot of opportunities over there. (Can Padnos just move already or are they afraid of all the contamination that's surely there?)
  24. Drunk and aggressive bros who are looking for a fight are probably the biggest threat downtown. Seriously. That and intoxicated drivers. There have been plenty of people killed by those two groups of people
  25. Exactly, murders happen everywhere. Kentwood has been in the headlines almost just as much as GR lately
