Project Thread/New Construction/Photo du jour/Const. CAMs

It's quite savvy for Vanderbilt to construct this. As rents increase in Nashville, housing near the campus will become (has become) unaffordable for graduate students who have to survive on the funding they receive from their programs. If you want to draw the best graduate students, you need to be able to offer adequate funding for the area. Alternatively if you can provide housing at a reduced price, and at a walkable distance, there is less need to pay as high a stipend, as housing and transport costs are lower for the students. It is yet to be seen if they will charge market rents or not however. The temptation to yield maximum proft will be great. On another note, I'm so glad this area will finally be getting a grocery store beyond CVS and Virginia's market.

I think it is quite unlikely they will look like the collegiate gothic dorms Vandy has been building actually. They tend to design hypermodern buildings, including in their work on even very old universities such as Cambridge (https://www.fosterandpartners.com/projects/). The projects that do involve traditional styles are ones where they add something modern to an already existing old building. As someone else pointed out, that area of campus is not in a very traditional style, and is full of medical buildings and sports venues. Not the most attractive part of campus. They may think that a traditional style building might look out of place there (although I think they should go traditional personally, transform the area!). The firm have designed some very famous buildings, especially in London. The 'gherkin' is a prime example, but also stuff like the bridge leading to St. Pauls cathedral, and the modern aspects of the British Museum. They design some great modern buildings, however, for me, modern buildings are hit or miss, so it will be interesting to see if we get something stunning. Vanderbilt seems to be interested in building beautiful places recently, so let's hope they carry that ethos over to the modern buildings too.

Fantastic. It's hard to visualise all of these new projects in my head, this area of Nashville is going to be really cool!

This all looks really impressive. The last picture suggesting a change in rules so that alcohol can be served makes me wonder, what vibe should the city be aiming to create on 1st Avenue? It might be nice if 1st Ave was a little more sophisticated, or more family-oriented than Broadway. Although even if it were just more honky tonks it would be an improvement. I don't know what tools the city has available to shape that sort of thing. Either way, to activate that space in some manner would be fantastic, arguably the river is not made use of enough, and the idea of putting an area for programming right there is exciting.

GBT River North, 3 towers of up to 38 stories, 3.7 acres
Darwin replied to markhollin's topic in Nashville
I hope these new bridges will be attractively designed. Infrastructure projects across the river will have a major visual impact. I like the bridges we have now, so hopefully we can see something similarly eye-catching. I am glad to see that the bridge will be multi-modal, there is little reason a bridge should ever be just for cars, as it places an enormous burden on the pedestrian to have to walk further afield to find a crossing point.- 54 replies

Do you know if it is common for them not to take a vote, and what that usually signifies?

I would love it if First Avenue were activated in this way. Let's not waste that river view!

The developments along these train tracks makes me wish Union station was still a passenger station.

I'm glad that devlopment is happening, but the design is pretty unpleasant to me. It's not that it's boring, it's that it's actually visually disturbing, which is definitely not what you want on a building this tall!
