1. I was down visiting recently and decided to drive around the Boeing campus and the airport. It happened to be around 5:00PM and the traffic was backed-up pretty good leaving the airport's exit road (International Blvd?) out to Dorchester Rd.. This road badly needs to be widened to 4 lanes.
2. Thanks! This is so ridulous that is borders on being insane. I think the "townies" are getting desparate to form some type of town. I believe the townies' intention is to carve out an area they feel will pass the legal muster; successfuly incorporate; then try to annex the sections of JI that was previously part of the town. I wonder how the former town residents from the last version of the town feel about being left out of the incorporation this 4th time around(?). Which should in itself cause less support and enthusiam for incorporating. And the townies are being a bit presumptuous that they will be able to annex all or most of the areas from the previous town limits that are not being included in the initial new incorporated area. I think at the end of the day the townies will end up on the loosing end. It will be interesting to know who many properties the city will annex at the next City Council meeting on Aug 16.
3. I'm unable to open these links. Can you provide the source for these links? I'm most interested in seeing the proposed town boundaries.
4. As reported in the P&C today, James Island has lost it's appeal to the state Supreme Court and the town is officially dissolved. The mud slinging is already well underway. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2011/jul/23/high-court-rejects-james-islands-appeal/
5. The Post & Courier must have been looking to fill space in their edition yesterday since this really isn't 'new' news. This will be the 2nd or 3rd BAR review of this project. The project will be a nice addition to this part of town, but I'm alittle concerned about the developer - Dolphin. From what I can learn about Dolphin is they have no commercial development experience, just residential single home building. And do they have the financial backing to do a project like this(?).
6. CHS had another record breaking month in May - 252,543 passengers which is a 31.8% increase over May 2010 and also beats the previous record set in April 2011. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2011/jun/23/charleston-airport-sets-new-passenger-record/
7. If I were Riley, I might consider starting a petition to bring all the unincorporated area of James Island into the city. There's a better chance of success than ever before plus it would throw the pro-town incorporation folks a curve ball. Otherwise, the city needs to go after strategic annexations to try to split the unincorporated areas into smaller areas. The city doesn't have time to waste and I hope that Riley already a game plan in place in anticipation of winning the recent legal challenge.
8. Great news. I have been wondering when the SC Supreme Court would be making a ruling. I will be curious to see how many former town residents petition to join the city in the coming weeks. I'm sure there will be a 4th incorporation attempt coming down the line.
9. CHS had a record breaking monthly passenger count of 239,531 in April, up 29% over April 2010. The increase was, as no surprise, mostly attributed to the "Southwest effect". http://www.postandcourier.com/news/business/
10. CARTA? No. CARTA did cut back or eliminated some routes over the past few months but also added/expanded some routes.
11. BAR gave conceptual approval in March to convert the old Rivers Federal Bldg into a 120 room hotel. Last night, the developer went back to the BAR seeking approval for 41 additional rooms for a total of 161 rooms. Also, and I don't know the specifics, but the developer is requesting a height variance. I'm not sure if this is related to the 41 rooms and/or a rooftop lounge area. The developer is Dewberry Capital based in Atlanta. The firm's prinicipal executive and owner, John Dewberry, owns a second home in downtown Charleston. I do not know if the BAR approved the 41 rooms and height variance or not last evening.
12. Actually, I believe this is going to be an office building.
13. ^^ Interesting pic of the old truck with the tree that grew into the truck bumper!
14.

Correct. It is immediately east of Crossroads.
15. Some work has started this week. I believe work has started on relocating utilities and perhaps other pre-construction site work. Any one have any other updates? My bad. Im referring to the vacant block on Semmes Ave next to UPS Freight HQ's.
16. There must be a potential investor that requested the height change. Perhaps for an apartment building. I would have been okay with allowing 120' - 140' in this area.
17. Does anyone have an update on Buzz and Neds proposed West End expansion to the old Fuddrucker's location? There' hasn't been any construction activity there for several months now and I'm wondering if they've abandoned expanding to this site.
18. Found out this morning that Borders on W Broad will be closing. They have a clearance sale that starting today. Hate to see that store go away.
19. This could be a good addition to the downtown entertainment scene, and these guys appear to know what they're doing. Here's a link to The Alley in Raleigh: http://www.bowlthealley.com/
20. Not sure on the timeframe. Could take be a few days or a few months. Not sure if there's any typical timeframe for these rulings. Personally, I think the Court will rule in the town's favor. That's not based on any legal understanding I have of the case, just my gut feeiing. Now, if I recall correctly, if the city loses the case, the city could sue the James Island PSD over the issue that the PSD is not chartered to provide services to a municipality. This could force the town to create its own trash collection and fire departments. I doubt the city would bring suit, and at the end of the day it doesn't accomplish anything.
21. That's the latest news I heard also. I wish for now they would tear the old library down since it could take months to resolve in court and for construction to get underway. The old library is a terrible eyesore in a high profile area of the city.
22. Maybe some progress for the old Rivers Federal Bldg. on Calhoun. BAR will review conceptual approval at this week's meeting to convert the building to a hotel. Just about any use would be better than a big empty building but I would prefer to see the building converted into an office building. Also being reviewed at the BAR meeting this week s a proposed 6-floor condo project at 411 Meeting St.. aka Midtown. Link in today's P&C biz section: http://www.postandco.../news/business/ Now, when is something going to happen with the old King St. county library demo and replacement hotel project??
23. Here's just a few that come to mind - - White Point Garden (aka The Battery) - Middleton Place (where mine was taken years ago), Drayton Hall and any of the other plantations - Any of the beaches - Folly, Sullivans, IOP - Angel Oak (on Johns Island) - Hampton Park (downtown) - Cannon Park (downtown) - Waterfront Park (downtown) - Charles Towne Landing (West Ashley) Waterfront Park and White Point Garden are easy walking distance of each other so you could take pics at both sites. I know I'm missing some others!
24. Will be happy when this gets settled once and for all. Gut feeling is SC Supreme Court will rule in town's favor. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2011/jan/05/james-island-incorporation-fight-heads-sc-supreme-/
25. At the Oct 13 BAR meeting, plans will be reviewed for a new 4-story Hilton Hotel at 33-35 Lockwood Blvd. This would be next door to the Courtyard Marriott. Here's the BAR meeting agenda for the 10/13 - scroll down to the bottom for the Hilton site and rough building designs. http://www.charlestoncity.info/shared/docs/0/10.13.10%20image%20overview%20pdf.pdf
