  1. I saw something in the N&O about Red, Hot & Blue being in trouble, but can't find the article now. I read somewhere that the tracks they are ripping out were unfortunately causing problems with what they were doing in that area, so they had to be removed, but the pieces are going to be placed in the city museum and possibly the NC Museum of History.
  2. GPS maker Garmin has announced that they will be opening an R&D center in the Triangle. Apparently from a statement Garmin made, they, like RIM has done, is moving in to take avantage of the pool of laid off engineers from Sony-Ericsson and others. The company is looking for space and wants to set up shop ASAP, so this will be a quick addition of about 40 jobs back to the tech pool here. They also hinted that more jobs could come as business increases again. Another vote of confidence from the tech sector for the Triangle! http://www.newsobser...ory/281473.html
  3. An executive chef from a German restaurant in NYC is opening a restaurant in DTR in the old Champa Thai Cafe space. The new restaurant will be called Capital Club 16 and feature such things as Bacon braised in Red Wine and rolled beef with pickles and onions: http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/275498.html
  4. RIM has officially confirmed that they are now opening a new facility in the Raleigh area. The office will be an R&D center, but other than that, they are not releasing any further details at this time: http://blogs.newsobserver.com/business/its-official-blackberry-coming-to-triangle
  5. It looks like RIM, the maker of the Blackberry Smartphone, has the area in its crosshair for opening a campus. They apparently were in the area recently interviewing and had a dot on the Triangle on their map of RIM locations. The article speculates that they could possibly be looking to snatch up skilled employees laid off by Sony-Ericsson, as they have apparently done in other places where Motorola and others have laid people off. That would really be a big boost to our tech sector here, after the large number of layoffs we have seen http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/232124.html
  6. Update to yesterday's story about Capital Bank...shareholders have approved the sale of $55 million in new stock, which could be used to make acquisitions in the areas stated yesterday. Looks like we could have a budding regional bank on our hands . http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/226286.html
  7. According to the N&O, Capital Bank has indicated in recent regulatory filings that they intend to expand into South Carolina, Virginia, Eastern Tennessee and the rest of North Carolina. Regulators consider Capital Bank well-capitalized and apparently they are going to raise cash through the sale of stock, which shareholders are going to vote on soon: http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/224595.html
  8. Here is a ranking to NOT be proud of....according to the N&O, Raleigh has ranked 6th in the nation for the most dangerous streets for pedestrians: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/traffic/story/183870.html
  9. Well considering that the Marlins started construction on a new stadium in Miami in July of this year and an estimated completion date of 2012, I think the notion that the Marlins may move is pretty much dead. They are also changing their name to the Miami Marlins upon moving into the new stadium.
