  1. Welll park-and-rides are free.

And after hearing Sessoms comment on Wavy and the fact that he's signing the papers to acquire the NS ROW on Thursday leads me to believe that LR is a GO in Virginia Beach. Once they've paid 45 or so million dollars (Circuit City,ROW), there's no turning back IMO.

Nothing is a done deal...they could turn it into a bike path for all we know

  2. Because McCain and Palin would be doing so much better with the economy? But seriously, when there is a down economy like this, you have to first wait for government projects to get rolling before you can expect private projects to get back on track. So for the near future, road projects and rail projects are the things to be looking for, everything else you can expect about a year delay.

The biggest issue with these delays will be the change in ideas...the town center will get built out, as will new urban developments in the VB downtown, but what we are currently hoping to see might not actually happen...when the town center was breaking ground, the idea was to have a twin tower center, but as we all know only one tower was built and the plans for the area changed. Which also including Virginia's new tallest building, something that no one saw happening when the town center started.

I have gotten to the point that it doesn't matter which side of the isle they are on that they are no longer for the American people. Everything is a power grab and trying to change the constitution to allow them more control over us. Just be glad that we aren't loosing jobs as bad as other metros

  3. The truth of the matter is that banks are not loaning any money right now, the economy will be paralyzed until they start to lend again, even slam dunk investments like Westin Norfolk or Aloft are not getting loans.

Damn it banks, we didnt give you bailouts so you could stuff it under your mattress!

Are you really surprised by this? Bailouts were BS to begin with. Its going to get worse down the line with the current administration

  4. Gordon Beirsch is in Town Center, its pretty decent. There also used to be one out on Laskin Road, can't remember the name right now.

That was Hilltop Brewery. They use to have live bands there and had really good beer!

  5. I am not too sure about the Warehouse, looks crummy right now....

However, does anyone get a Richmond vibe from this project, that is a good thing ^_^

(Which reminds me, we need a capital Ale house!)

No, we need our own micro brewery...I'm of German descent and have always dreamed of opening a loc brewery/restaurant....we need things that are region can be proud of that are not from other metros.

  6. Sacramento averaged, 12,571. Memphis, 12,745. Indiana, 14,182.Minnesota, 14,505. Charlotte, 14,526. Get the point?

Your telling me Virginia Beach/Norfolk couldn't blow those kind of numbers out of the water? I'd bet a million $$ that we would be in the top 10 in the first couple years at least.

You are missing the points they are trying to make. Look at those metros and the jobs they have. Guarantee they more high paying jobs and major corporate backing....Fans are only a minor part of bringing in a team...Population is a small part of it...its also the cable franchise.

  7. Nowhere in the SPQ documents does it mention a pro arena/stadium.. They are too worried about Tidewater Gardens residents to think big and outside of the box. Plus it's like four blocks from the rail station, and it would probably take up 1/2 of the quadrant. LOL. I want the arena/stadium directly on the rail line.. Either next to Harbor Park (we could have our little version of Philly's sports complex), in Pembroke SGA, or Fort Norfolk

Look in the pdf that was for the 2010 plans for DT and you will see two possible locations! I imagine vdogg and guy know what i'm talking about

  8. I don't think its going to have under ridership like u think everyone thinks. I don't see the huge ridership like u are projecting. This line is going to used majority by those who already ride the bus...People around here are not just going to park and ride unless traffic downtown is so horrendous that they can't make it in reasonable time.

also depends if they are going to charge you for parking and riding

  9. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't have close to the amount of pepole heading into downtown as Charlotte. CLT has 70,000 employees in the vicinity of the CBD. We have 42,000 in the vicinity of the CBD, 20,000 at the medical center, 7,000 at a university.. So it's pretty similar numbers. Also a higher # of commuters in HR use mass transit than CLT.

With people heading to ODU, EVMS, Norfolk General, Downtown, Norfolk State, Sentara Leigh, Military Circle/ Military Hwy Corridor, Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall,Harbor Park etc.. We will exceed ridership estimates

yes there is that many people there but where are these people coming from? Vabeach and Chesapeake mostly. So you have train that runs 5 or so miles from this area. You think people are going to park their cars just 5-8 miles from DT. I don't think those people will ride that until it comes close to their front door. You also have a larger group of urban minded in the Charlotte area

  10. If it only did 5K you would see Norfolk on the cover of every anti- LR article in the United States.. Just like they are prasing cities like Charlotte and Phoenix for being over population estimates, they would be damning Norfolk's system..

5000 is only 2500 people riding daily, assuming everybody rides twice. If only 2500 people out of the 100,000+ that live and/ or work along the line are willing to take the train, Norfolk doesn't deserve it.. Im still sticking to my guestimate of 10,000. If you look at the EIS, the estimate of 6150 was very, very conservative and the station by station breakdown was unrealistic.

They are only expecting 400 boardings at Newtown. I'm sure that will be over 1000.

Charlotte was saying, "Maybe 5K-6K," in the months before their line opened. Little did they know, 15,000 would ride. It will catch on when people are travelling to work in the morning, in bumper to bumper traffic heading into Norfolk from the Beach and they see the train fly past them..

Also, Tides and Admirals games will add probably 2,000 boardings on any given night..

we have no way the cbd that Charlotte has...they actually have more people going downtown than that of Norfolks. I love your optimisitc views but until it goes into other cities it will not look as productive as it could be....You need a line to NOB, little creek and the Airport! Also we need links between the pennisula and the southside...that will happen in due time...A lot of this depends on if the leaders of this area go through with this joint task force and push one major project to the state...This is something we should have been doing for a long time. The third tunnel is critical for the connection of the LR from Norfolk and to Newport News....It is very important for the navy since the ship yard is right there and soon to be Navy housing. I think Sessoms is a big push beyond the typical Vabeach thinking as well!

  11. Cool guys..

I'll be riding to Harbor Park when I see the tides, Medical Center when I see ODU (shuttle bus to the campus), Monticello Station when I see the Admirals, my mother works half a mile from the Newtown Station, if it went to the Oceanfront I'd probably be on it every day, but if they create a shuttle bus to go from Newtown Station to TC then I'll ride it there..

They need to start advertising more so people know where it's going and how much it costs, they need to show off the benefits to riding the train.. Gotta get ridership up to displease the naysayers. Shooting for 10,000/day

I only see it doing around 5-6K . That said, it will be more once it actually goes to other destinations or leave from highly populated areas like Vabeach.

  12. Virgina Beach could be the best bet.. They are the only ones with a plan for an arena in the future. Norfolk hasn't shown any interest since they lost the Expos.

actually you are wrong, Norfolk has a couple spots that they want to build a arena at in the SPQuad.

they had to put it off to put the money aside for the new courthouse dt

  13. Having a "world where no one made more or less than anyone else and we all had the same things available to us all" is not fair at all, because not everyone puts forth the same effort, yet they all make the same. That is the major drawback of socialism - it rewards laziness and penalizes initiative.

Exactly! I'm in a union and see lazy worthless people making way too much money for what they put in!

  14. And then you have this.. Norfolk Southern reports estimates for Petersburg to Norfolk HSR at $75 million. The State had estimated it at $262 million. This is total crap, it's no way the State could screw up the price that much. It's almost like they don't want us to succeed.

    http://hamptonroads.com/2009/09/passenger-...t-millions-less

You are just getting that! Its been like this for a long time. Look at the money for the roads

  15. Well, what I would suggest before approving the current SPQ plan is to re-establish the street grid (I think that's what you guys say) or rather create city blocks. Build in districts to support the standard draw such as, entertainment, art, fine dinning maybe. Make these buildings anywhere from 2 to 5 stories that are multi use and unique. If it were me, i would make it all brick, steele, and glass. Have the city some how make the developers offer it reasonable prices for businesses to relocate (maybe create a creative lease). Contact national chain like hardrock cafe and ask them to be an anchor for this new set of development. Build out an entertainment stage or gathering point of some type. Leave an area for scrapers and so forth, then build out the spq plan on the east side of all that.

I totally agree with this. DT has to a unique draw for this region...they need to do something to bring people from other areas in!

the problem is that i see is that we try to copy cat! I don't like this at all! We need to be original

  16. B B But....National Security!!!!!!!!1111!! Nevermind they built the thing in 1995 when the oceanfront was already heavily developed. And yet they are shocked, shocked I say, at the idea that there are highrises where there were....already highrises before. This whole thing is ludicrous and a complete waste of time and is indicative of the many "nontroversies" we have to put up with nowadays. I say move the thing and stop crying about it. Btw, whoever thought it was a good idea to put that in the middle of a heavily developed city in the first place probably needs to find other work.

They just found another use for Ft Monroe now!

  17. But the Beach extension has so many at grade crossings that will need to be embedded, way more than norfolk..The Beach has to remove the old tracks still in the ground.. && Norfolk's line is not embedded but for a few seconds going past harbor park then it stops until it gets downtown.. The Beach will probably have five or six more stations than Norfolk, and don't forget once the train gets near the convention center the ROW ends, and the train will work on city streets again.

just a little FYI, Urbanfan is a engineer.
