  1. An Article will appear in tommrows Ledger that will announce Starbucks will open its 4th columbus location at the old Scholtzkys deli on Bradley Park Drive. The company is investing $214,000 into renovation of the deli and it is set to open by the end of March. Arbys on Veterans downtown will be relcating to a 5,200 square foot retail center being constructed at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and 15th street. That same center will have a dunkin' donuts/ Baskin Robbins combination. opening is set for about 10 months on that
  2. The other one opened up about 3 months ago on Victory Drive. It's next to the Sonic
  3. Checkers Hamburgers has broke ground on it's 3rd Columbus resturant in less than a year. The newest one is going in the midtown area along Macon/Wynnton road at the intersection of Hilton Avenue. Directly in front of the old olympic health spa building.
  4. I thought this was an intresting enough question to research and this is what i found. *Columbus-Muscogee County was the 1st Consolidation in the state of Georgia which happened in the 1970's prior to Consolidating the 1970 census reported Columbus(city limits only) population as 154,168 people then following consolidation the 1980 population jumped to 169,441. This shows the developed area of Columbus was always the majority population factor for that city. Communities like Upitaoi and Fortson really do not effect the population of Muscogee county because they are so rural. Columbus would still rate in the top cities for population even if not consolidated because the cities pop in 1970 was passed that of what Macon & Savannah are at now. 1970 population of largest US cities Columbus is #90 1980 Population for Columbus after consolidation Columbus is 88 Then we have Augusta-Richmond County the city and county consolidated in the mid-late 90's therefore to see where it stands we have to take a look at the population from the 1990 census then compare it to the 2000 census. In 1990 Augustas population within it's city limits was 44,639 people according to the census website(LINK BELOW) Then after consolidation with Richmond county the cities population soared to 195,182 people. Despite what the numbers say in the mid 90's Augusta really did not feel or appear to be a city of 44,639 people it felt much larger Augustas population in 1990 scroll down to Georgia and AUG will be listed Augustas population as of 2000 after consolidation Consolidation helped both cities grow in numbers and this is just a brief view to answer your question about how they would compare with supporting census facts
  5. Well that explains what all the land moving on moon road is. It seems like such a large area being cleared for just 25 employees and I guess the majority of that $22million investment will be for technoligical connections. If anyone can find a sketch of how the new building is going to look please post it.
  6. I have no idea what it is. I've called nearly every contact I have and no one knows anything. I drive by there everyday so hopefully soon something will pop up saying what it is. A new shopping center of some sort would be a nice addition to that area.
  7. Great News, Georgia is the fastest growing state in the southeast population wise for 2007 with the state adding more than 200,000 new residents this year. We are ranked 5th nationally and highest for states east of the Mississippi River Article from WTVM about fastest growing states in the U.S.
  8. I would totally agree that Columbus and Opelika-Auburn are part of the same metro now. Just look at the amount of interaction taking place. Local tv stations WTVM(abc affiliate) & WRBL(cbs affiliate) have setup offices in Opelika to cover news for that area while the main office remain in Columbus also the CW station WSWS has offices in both locations. Many Columbus based business have setup offices in A-O and vice versa with A-O businesses setting up operations in Columbus. Then Smith Stations, Alabama a town of over 20,000 people located in southern Lee County actually touches the city limits of Columbus. From the City limits of Smiths Station to the City limits of Opelika there is only a mere 11 miles between them. The citys have grown alot closer even though Columbus remains the larger and regional center. Also when bad enough incidents occur Columbus still remains the regional tramua center for Opelika-Auburn & Lee County. Due to so much interation occuring between the two in the past few years I can see how the Census may include Lee County into Columbus MSA. I'm not really sure about how Macon & Warner Robbins interact. Usually in that part of the state i'm just in Macon.
  9. Ok thanks for the info I was just curious about where all the migration was going. I do see consolidation as a possiblity as was the case with other GA cities.
  10. I'm a little bit curious about Macon's population. Since the 1990's the auctual city of Macon has been declining in population, but throughout the forums it indicates that people are leaving the city and moving to the county. Primarily which counties around Macon are they migrating to is it just Bibb or what and how many of those counties are contained in Macons MSA as of now? That could be a big idea as to which counties are going to be added to Macons MSA.
  11. The new coffee house on second avenue is near the intersection of 44th street on the same side of the street as the shell gas station in what was that vacant lot next to the gas station. I know the one your talking about I believe it's a Fountain City Coffee. There is also another coffee shop further up at the intersection of Whittlesley Rd & Whitesville Road it's inbetween the staybridge hotel & that new liquor store. I forgot the name though.
  12. I was mistaken the new coffehouse going up on second avenue is called "Back on the Grind Coffee" The building is up and construction crews are finishing up the parking and drive-thru areas. Where is the Bradley Park Starbucks suppose to be located? --Also retailer city gear moved into Columbus with two locations. The midtown location in cross country opened this past week and theres a second store on South Lumpkin road in the riverplace shopping center behind Bank of America.
  13. In addition to the projects you listed for Muscogee county there is also a strong possiblity that Interstate 185 is about to be linked from Columbus to near Tallahasse, Flordia at I-10. The state is doing all the studies now and many south Georgia counties & cities like Albany are pushing for it. This is probaly a real possiblity
  14. You are also correct I did not notice the date i figured it was a more recent article when it showed up as one of the top article in my google search. My mistake i'll attempt to find more current numbers
  15. It appears you are correct yerocal. I did the research and its true that Macon Mall is the states second largest below is a link I found from the Augusta Chronicle that shows the states 10 largest indoor shopping malls and Macon mall does fall second Augusta Mall is 9th the good thing is these are the only two malls in the state outside of Metro Atlanta that make that list that is something to be proud of either way: Georgia's 10 largest malls from Augusta Chronicle
  16. In no way did I say Augusta did not get new development in the central city. By central city i meant the actual city limits of the Augusta. On my trips to Augusta I saw alot of construction in the retail and residential sectors which is why I do not see why the numbers in population have declined so much by wikipiedas numbers. The city is certainly growing in developments therefore the only explination i could come up with was that people must be leaving the city limits of Augusta and moving to the surrounding communities, but continuing to work and shop in the city limits of Augusta. That is why developments continue to florish in the city. That is what my statement meant.
  17. This is very true i was shocked when i saw it on their also i know in the 2000 census Augustas population was just shy of 200,000 and i'm looking at the numbers on wikipiedia and its saying that in 6 years the city has lost over 10,000 residents. I just don't see that from my trips to Augusta the city is booming there is new retail and residential developments popping up everywhere. I guess it's really just people moving out of the central city and into the suburbs as is the case in Macon. Macon is also booming with growth in the development area, but declining in population numbers while surrounding communities are exploding with growth, but whats it matter anyway in 30 years Augusta, Columbus, Macon, and Chattanoga will all be part of Metro Atlanta.
  18. I thought this was a intresting piece of info. We always talk about how large GA cities are well i searched wikipiedia for the largest cities in the US and its pretty neat that out of nearly 18,000 incorporated places nationwide this is where our cities rank according to population. ACTUAL POPULATION NOT MSA or CSA: Atlanta- 34th largest city in the United States Population-486,411 Augusta-116th largest city in the United States Population-189,366 Columbus-117th largest city in the United States Popluation-188,660 Savannah- 186th largest city in the United States Population-127,889 Athens- 218th largest city in the United States Population- 111,580 There list only goes for cities with over 100,000 residents so these are the only GA cities that qualify. There are 258 cities on that list. Out of 18,000 incorporated places our states cities do have some real population power nationally. Its hard to belive that our states top 3 cities are larger than places like Fort Lauderdale, FLA; Salt Lake City, Utah; Little Rock, Arkasnsas; Jackson, Mississippi; Syracuse, Ny; Our states top 4 cities are more populated than places like Green Bay Wisconsn; Topeka, Kansas, Columbia, SC; Its just wierd anyone who wants to view the complete list can go to wikipiedia and search United States most populated cities for the complete list. The population figures are based on US Census estimates as of July 1, 2006 other notable population of GA Cities: Albany- 76,939 (2000 census) Macon- 97,606(2005 estimate) Rome- 31,980 (2000 census) Valdosta- 43,724 (2000 census) Warner Robbins-48,804 (2000 census)
  19. Oh not sure if anyone has heard about this but Phenix City officials have been working with a Fort Worth, Texas firm and trying to attract Bass Pro shops to the riverfront in downtown Phenix City. Nothing is in concrete yet, but it appears bass pro shops is coming to town one way or the other everyone has been thinking it was going near Columbus Park Crossing or north Columbus. I believe Phenix City does have a good chance at landing the store mainly because of the fact of the property there looking to use is near the river and lately Bass Pro shops has been placing there stores in the suburban cities not the central cities as was the case in a Montgomery, AL store that opened earlier this year rather than in montgomery a city slightly larger than Columbus they placed it in the suburb of Prattville a town smaller than Phenix City.
  20. I'm not sure about the bradley park starbucks store, but I know theres a new local coffee house being built at the intersection of 2nd Ave and 44th street. I believe its called java house or java time construction is nearly complete on the building. Also theres been alot of rumors circulating about a new midtown starbucks on Wynnton near the main Aflac campus. It may become a reality now with the city recieving that massive grant. Also have learned that White house coffee is looking at the midtown Columbus area. More growth in midtown is a new CVS and strip shopping center is being constructed at the intersection of Macon Road & Auburn Avenue everything on that block has been torn down this week: American Deli, Mr. Transmission, The old Central Park Hamburgers, Love jewlers, and the radio wholesale. A new store called city gear has put their signs up for a new store next to Publix in cross country plaza.
  21. Hi ATLman1, demoliton started earlier this month I got a few photos of whats going on so far the new structure is expected to open early in 2009 I'll try to get more photos as the demolition continues.
  22. I haven't noticed it on here yet, but i know its been in the wind for a while. But Steve and Barrys is opening a store in Cross Country plaza in the old service merchandise building. Its suppose to open up later this month and employ nearly a 100 people there was a article on Columbusareaonline about it about a week ago. Hopefully this could be a starting trigger to the revitalization of midtown Columbus
  23. THe building that is going up across from the old Amerisuites Hotel on Northlake Parkway is a Xtreme powersports Marine store. Its a massive building covering the whole lot. I drove by the other day and they were putting the frame of the building up. It appears to be a two story building. In the same area the construction has started on the Amerisuites hotel which will become a Hyatt Place. There not tearing the building down just gutting and redoing the inside and putting a new roof on it. Its expected to reopen sometime next year
  24. Columbus is possibly about to get its 6th area Walgreens store. The Paradise group and Atlanta/Flordia development company is requesting a rezone for land at the corner of River Road and Mobley Road. This is located about a mile north of Green Islands Hills. The Paradise group also is known for developing Publix supermarkets, starbucks coffee shops and other great national retail stores. I'll keep everyone updated as I learn more.
  25. Three starbucks in the metro thats great I was recently in a city about the size of Columbus and they started with 1 starbucks then a year later 6 opened. I can strongly see one going up downtown near broadway as well as when the condo construction is complete one in the downtown phenix city area. I've also found out that we are getting a new resturant I've never ate there but Indigo Joes which is a sports pub and resturant is coming into the city I'm not sure of the location yet, but I would think it would problay be the Landings or Columbus Park Crossing if you look on there website http://www.indigojoes.com under locations you will see opening soon Columbus, GA. This will only be the fourth location in Georgia 2 are located in the north Atlanta suburbs as well as one in Augusta. I'm curious though has anyone heard whats going on with the bonefish grill in CPC? I don't even see where room remains to build it except down near the BMW dealership or the Big 10 tires.
