CARMAX COMING TO COLUMBUS!!!!!! Carmax will be opening up a new Columbus location by next spring along North Veterens Parkway across from Hughston hospital next to Advanced Auto parts. This will be the chains first Columbus location. The old lowes building will be torn down next to the property and hopefully other developments can go there no date for construction to begin yet, but should begin soon if opening date is in the spring.

BURLINGTON COAT FACTORY TO OPEN IN BRITT DAVID It became official yesterday that the former hobby lobby site will become a new burlington coat factory. The store confirmed it saying the store will be a 70,000 square foot location opening on Novemeber 4th, It will feature the companies brand new prototype design. A job fair will be held sometime next month and the store should employ around 75 people. Officials say that the company had been trying to expand into Columbus for five years and at one point was suppose to go into cross country plaza at the location that was occupied by steve and barrys. They have now been waiting for a location large enough to open up and when Hobby Lobby opened it was the perfect fit. Dr. Agarwal applied for the permit on the building because he is an executive with palm estate realty which owns the Britt david shopping center. This is truly a great addition to Columbus. Hopefully more national retailers are in the works.

Yea I to have heard rumors about the land near chik fila I have heard that arbys and dunkin donuts have been seeking a site in that area. On a seperate note ihop is adding another location ons gateway drive in front of walmart

The following article ran on WTVM on March 25th. Towards the end of the article you will see where they say that it will be a 2 story publix store I don't know how they will play it with 2 floors, but I have seen a 2 story Walmart store before not in this region of the country though.

Well looks like Freedom Furniture and Electronics will be replacing Books a Million at cross country plaza. The store only has one other Georgia location and it is in Hinesville. On their website it shows 12 stores ranging from California to Virginia mostly in large military communities. I guess anything is better than having a large vacant store front. A similar store US Discounters opened on Gentian Blvd several years ago and they have done very well in the city. Also in the cross country development I think it will be unique to have a two story publix store there

Bad news today the Books a million store in cross country plaza will be closing on APril 15th for good. The developer says a new store will be coming to the location but is not releasing any details yet as to which one

A few of them are up already I doubt they aer yet functional being that construction is not complete yet I've counted a total of 7 so far between St. Marys and Victory Drive. I expect when functional they will be on Georgia navigator.com

A little good news Columbus' unemployment rate dropped to 9.1% in the month of September. Still high but down from where it has been. Hopefully we are on the road to recovery finally.

Well I guess someone in Atlanta has finally taken note that Traffic congestion does exist in places besides metro Atlanta. Columbus is finally getting freeway cameras added to Interstate 185. As of right now the only installed cameras are between Victory Drive and St. Marys Road. I would imagine that soon they will be added even further up the interstate being that in my opionion the worst traffic is between Macon Road and Airport Thruway. Hopefully soon these will be avalialble on the Georgia navigator site. Also does anyone know how wide the highway will be between St marys and Victory it looks like its going to be wider than 6 lanes like the rest of the highway.

Well here's a little good news business wise for Columbus. Aarons rent to own is opening is 4th local store on Veterans Parkway in Columbus in the old Farmers Furniture Store. I saw the signs last night up on the building. Farmers moved to a larger showroom on Macon Road in the old Toy's R us store. Also some great news for Columbus-South A new Hampton Inn will be built along South Lumpkin Road near the National Infantry museum. Groundbreaking should be soon, but no details yet on how many rooms or floors will be in the new hotel.

Sad thing I first moved to columbus in '96 at that time the olympic softball was here and they were discussing demolitioning BTW then and I have heard it so many times since then. I seriously doubt that anything will happen to BTW within the next 10-15 years. Right now I believe its just talk in the wind.

Economic Experts say Columbus to Rebound Much faster from Recession This quote is from Sundays Columbus Ledger Enquirer. Veteran Economist Jeff Humphreys is quoted as saying the following: "Start with 17,000 direct and indirect jobs created by Fort Bennings expansion. Add another 13,700 generated by Kia Motors and its Suppliers in nearby West Point, GA. Then mix in another 2,400 from NCR Corp, Prosperity America, Exide Technologies, and Nash Finch Co. Firms that have landed in the city or are expanding. It all adds up an economic slam dunk for Columbus and the surrounding area, said Humprphreys, director of the University of Georgia's Selig Center for Economic Growth. Thats 33,000 jobs coming into this area within the next 3 to 5 years. And you only lost 4,800 jobs in the great recession. So its really pretty simple math as to why I'm so bullish on the Columbus MSA. There's no other place in the state that has such a good econmic outlook. You got hit much less by the recession and you have so much in that economic pipeline"

Compared to cities it's size I say Columbus does do pretty good in nightlife. There is always that lack of colleges here, but the city makes up for that with a young military population at one of the largest installations in the world. And Large colleges don't always make a cities nightlife either. Look at Auburn. Very large institution, but the nightlife of Auburn bites. I had moved away from Columbus last summer and just moved back the city that I moved to was roughly about the size Columbus about 10,000 people difference, but I must say Columbus had alot more to do. Columbus' nightlife reputations suffers because it is so spread out that no one actually knows really where all the clubs and party spots are located here. You have the centralized party district near broadway that most people are familar with because it is so centralized, but there are other party spots throughout the city. The concerts that the city gets are very nice some large and small artist. I really enjoy the older Concerts that the rivercenter gets. Communication is a problem here also. I meet people all the time who have live in the city of Columbus that was unfamilar with the local teams. The nightlife is here. In no way does it compare with Mobile or Birmingham, but Columbus' nightlife is faster than Montgomery's which has several colleges and at last census count had passed Mobile in 2000 and was about 16,000 people larger than Columbus.
