  1. New Photo of the Day for 12/5/08 A view up 12th Street downtown in fall
  2. That seems kind of wierd that they would take it that route. It looks like it follows Victory Drive (US Hwy 280) through Columbus. In my opinion it would be odd to bring a interstate that way since it is so developed. The previous routes I had seen showed it coming off I-85 in Auburn and following a route near US 80 to Phenix City then take JR Allen Parkway into Columbus turn south and link up with I-185 to Victory Drive US 280 and follow 280 south.
  3. Columbus to Regain Lost jobs Eventually Despite all the bad economic news as of lately in the Columbus area there is good news ahead the following article was published in the LE on Nov. 22, 2008
  4. PRATT AND WHITNEY CUTTING 350 JOBS/ ONLY SEVEN LOCALLY IN GEORGIA
  5. New Photo of the day for Dec. 4, 2008 A misty November Morning looking West on Wynnton Road
  6. New Daily Photos The Colors of Fall at the Back Entrace of Columbus State University
  7. Well Good news for residents of Southeast Columbus. Construction has begun on a extension of Antienam Drive. Residents had long wanted the street expansion because since Ft. Benning closed access points on St. Marys road there has only been one road out of the lower St. Marys road area of Columbus. which is largely residentail with numerous subdivisions and Apartments. The new extension will connect Bunker Hill Road to Old Cussetta Road near the Ft. Benning Access point at Old Cussetta. Below are a couple of photos I got of the progress.
  8. There currently are no plans for the site yet. Its still a little too soon. The ATF is still on site conducting an investigation into the blaze. I would imagine though that with the level of destruction at the mill the remainder will be tore down and something new will be placed on that prime riverfront property. It will probaly be about 6 months before they even make up their minds about what to do with the shell that remains
  9. Attached are some short videos of the actual fire its self that I was able to capture
  10. More Photos of the Bibb Mill Fire This photo is shortly after the fire first started A 100ft Ladder truck looks like dwarfs compared to the gaint infero Water looks useless compared to the towering inferno A gasline makes its presence known through a sidewall Flames dance high above the 4 story structure A sidewall just sits in wait for flames to arrive
  11. I have been hearing rumors that there were plans to develope the upper 3 floors into lofts similar to the Johnston Mill. On the first floor there was a flea market. I had heard that it was one of the largest also. WTVM reported that the mill was over a quarter mile long and 4 floors high. The fire was so intense although the Mill actually ended on 1st avenue the heat from the flames could be felt as far back as 2nd avenue and 38th street. It was quite a site to watch. The flames were reported to be over 130 feet high at some points in the fire. Burning Embers have been reported to be falling as far away at Macon Road in Midtown. I would guess thats more than 7 miles from the plant. Embers have ignitied fires blocks away from the mill. Most were small and quickly extingushed.
  12. The historic Bibb Mill caught fire around Midnight this morning. I was onsite for almost 4 hours taking photos from various angles. I'll be adding photos throughout the next few days I have more than 140 pictures. Here are a few. Fire Fighters look on as gas lines explode through the roof of the building Photos dance out of 4th floor windows of the mill By this point little could be done to save the building Fire races toward the front of the building Firefighters attempt to save nearby buildings I left the area around 4:15 this morning and the mill was completely engulfed in flames reports indicate that there are 30 units from the Columbus Fire Department on scene as well as units from Phenix City had to be dispatched to the fire. Debris and hot ember is raining down as far away as downtown Columbus and has sparked small brush fires and threatened quite a few homes in the Bibb City area. I'll add more photos later as well as video that I recorded. A TRAGIC LOSS FOR COLUMBUS & GEORGIA
  13. Actually you may be correct and I may be the one who is mistaken. I passed by the new structure before I posted the orginal article and I was assuming that it was going to be a new access point since so many residents had complained about Moye Road should be reopened. The structure closely resembles that off the access points on South Lumpkin Road and Fort Benning Road.
  14. Good news for residents that commute to Fort Benning looks like the base is opening a new access point off Schatulga Road near Green acres Cemetary. I passed by that area today and noticed the structure is already up and a new road is being built currently. This will be great for reducing traffic congestion at the I-185 access point especaillt when BRAC is completed moving almost 36,000 new people into the Columbus area by 2011.
  15. Yes it is a new student apartment complex called University crossing. College Woods apartments were previously at the site, but the complex only had one two story unit. The new complex will extend all the way back to Courtyard II apartments. The new apartments will be 3 and 4 story units specifically for students much like Cougar Village off Gentian. Rowe Realty has been managing the property since early 2008 and ever since they acquired it from David Realty company surveyers have been working to get the new units built good too see ground has finally been broken. I just hope Rowe can manage this property better than other properties they have managed around Columbus which have earned them the label as slum lords.
  16. Moon Road Will Be Widened The first Phase of the Moon Road Widening project is almost complete from J.R. Allen Parkway to slightly south of Whittlesley Blvd. Looks like Columbus council has approved the widening of some more of moon road now. Below is a article from the Ledger Enquier
  17. The new Rob Doll Nissan building is coming along nicely at the intersection of Whitesville Road & Whittlesley Rd. I have learned that not only will the site of the new dealership more than going to double the size of the inventory for the Nissan dealer, but also developers are looking to lure at least one new hotel and new retail to the area as well.
  18. New Daily Photos for 10/21/2008 Found these on Flickr great Aerial views. Aerial View of Downtown Columbus Aerial View of downtown Phenix City

  21. New Photo of the day for October 3, 2008 A Rainbow over the TSYS building near 14th Street
  22. Columbus Photo of the Day for October 1, 2008 A Job you have to love. Window washers on the Govt. Center
  23. Phenix City is a must. The majority of workers that come into Columbus from out of town come from Russell and Lee Counties. It would be nice to have a coffee shop on the way since everywhere else has avoid PC like Starbucks, Fountain City, ect... Also a midtown location would be good or a south Columbus location near the infantry musuem or Ft. Benning gate would be nice
  24. I have felt the greenpoint closing was coming anyway. I felt that for a while. On another note the truth about Synovus cuts came today the company will eliminate 230 jobs in the Columbus area those cuts will be mostly back office and support positions in back office, CB&T and CB&T of east Alabama. No cuts will take affect until January of next year.
  25. This is very bad news but the good news is that not all the jobs will be cut in Columbus. They are eliminating the positions over a two year period through branches of banks they own which are in 5 southeastern states. Overall what I hear CB&T the bank they own locally has been fairing pretty well through these tough economic times. So possibly not many of the cuts will come in Columbus. We'll just have to wait it out and see.
