  1. The availability of housing for sale (or lack there of) in Charlotte is just astounding to me. That 18 days of inventory is real. I have a few different examples of people I know but one is that I have a family member that relocated here not long ago and is temporarily living in an apartment until they are able to find a house to purchase. Been a lot harder to come by than she anticipated. And it's not just existing houses too where you have multiple bidders that are only outdone by someone that just comes in with cash -- seems to be norm from people coming from more expensive markets like northeast and California or Pacific northwest. New builds are equally as bad. There are waiting lists dozens deep for lots at new construction. Just can't build fast enough. I assume part of that is a labor availability issue. Good problem to have I suppose, just glad I'm not looking to buy a new place around here lol
  2. Surprised nobody mentioned this yet, but Resident Culture is putting a second location in the ever booming Gold District of South End next to Unknown Brewing with a taproom, coffee and restaurant component focusing on Mexican Street Tacos -- sounds awesome! Glad to see them going here because it's much easier for me to get to than the OG location. https://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/news/2021/03/05/resident-culture-expanding-to-south-end.html
  3. Delta has always flown to the hub cities (Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Detroit, La Guardia) from Charlotte for as long as I can remember. What ever happens at RDU won't impact those destinations other than maybe frequency. I think they had around 25 destinations (give or take) prior to the pandemic and many of those got cut like everyone else. Nashville has a pretty big operation for Southwest so perhaps that's why too. Would rather JetBlue or Southwest open up more destinations here to drive prices down once traffic gets more normalized come 2022 and beyond. On a more related CLT topic, has the new air traffic control tower fully opened yet? I thought it was suppose to last year, but assume the pandemic pushed it back.
  4. Ahh, yes one of our favorite debates on this forum Found this rather interesting article on The Athletic (subscription required) about MLB expansion markets. Using a variety of data points, it puts Charlotte in a very favorable spotlight compared to the most commonly mentioned cities: Portland, Nashville, Vegas, Montreal, Monterrey (MEX) and Orlando. Some favorable pieces of data: 1) Charlotte has the 2nd lowest median age at 33.9 and 3rd largest population growth of those cities and 2) Annual revenue by companies based in Charlotte exceeds $355 billion which would put in the middle of the pack of existing MLB markets and above ones such Miami, Cincinnati, Denver, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Kansas City, etc. Very important for corporate sponsorships and suite purchases. The main knock on Charlotte is of course its proximity to Atlanta and it's near the "50% market share" where territorial rights become an issue. That could also be use to Charlotte's advantage of course in building a rivalry over time. That's a lot of what MLS is banking on too. Anyways, some very interesting information to read if you subscribe ($7/month). The article definitely is slanted in both Charlotte and Portland's favor and you could still easily make arguments for Nashville, Orlando and even Montreal (I still think they have a solid chance of landing a team down the road). I just don't buy in to Monterrey as a viable option at this point. Link: https://theathletic.com/2330266/2021/01/25/mlb-expansion-cities-data/
  5. Covid-19 hasn't slowed down the $600M/366,000 sqft Terminal Lobby expansion at CLT Airport. Some good photos courtesy of the airport's FB page: https://www.facebook.com/260026724048476/posts/3905210062863439/?d=n Added bonus, a previous post on their FB page has a night time view of the Charlotte skyline.
  6. Curious about the hotel mentioned in the article. Anyone know of potential plans for that? I've long thought something on the scale of the Greenbrier hotel in WV or Ritz Carlton in Lake Oconee, GA would do well there -- not necessarily those brands per say but thinking something in the 5 star mold. It's isolated enough from center city that they could definitely make it a destination resort. The USNWC would obviously still remain a huge draw on its own. Heck, you could even stick a massive brewery there like the Sierra Nevada one outside of Asheville with quite the view over looking the center. Agreed with @InSouthPark I think they'd have to get really creative to have light rail run out that way. Especially with the parking revenue issue mentioned.
  7. I'm glad someone was able to capture those aerials yesterday from College Gameday's show. Pretty spectacular and agree with rancenc. Best shots we've seen of the Charlotte skyline in a long time. Way better than the canned shots from days or months prior you get from Panthers or Hornets broadcasts.
  8. Thanks for all the information about the hub and some of the history. Lots of cool stuff. Question on the B&C expansions. Just based on the sizing of the diagrams, how many more gates is that adding? About 20 total (assume 10 each concourse) which accounts for room for widebodies? I thought I recall seeing that somewhere but I'm too lazy to look it up beyond going back a few pages on the board and the construction link provided lol I flew into Pittsburgh back in February right before all the Covid chaos hit. And it looked like PIT hadn't changed or been updated much since it was built. It did feel very cavernous and oversized for the amount of traffic it gets. It's a shame because it felt like an easy airport to navigate otherwise with the way it's laid out.
  9. Wasn't really sure where to put this, so dropping it here. This particular news isn't directly related to Charlotte, but something to keep an eye on with the constant speculation of a Wells Fargo HQ move to the Queen City. HP Enterprise (the storage/networking/server arm of the old HP) is moving their HQ from Silicon Valley to Texas. This is the latest in a series of HQ exits from California's unfriendly business climate. This certainly won't be the last company to leave CA either. I worked for HP/HPE up until a few years ago and know how significant of a change this is for the company given their ties to Silicon Valley. Much like Wells Fargo, HP was deeply rooted in the Bay Area of San Francisco dating back to their founding in 1939. Obviously the pandemic has changed the way we work, and the need for super expensive real estate in states like California is being lessened. Especially if you can attract the same talent in a lower cost metro area such as CLT. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/hewlett-packard-enterprise-leave-silicon-020027107.html
  10. My wife and I stayed here last week for a night out (thanks mom for babysitting). I will concur that this place is #1. The decor was awesome and it just had the feel of a very grand hotel. One of our favorite hotels in the Carolinas for sure. Oh, also highly recommend the rooftop bar cocktails and views. Little pricey but fantastic. Great bourbon selection!
  11. Just now saw this thread. I'd argue that most of the long time posters here in UP from Charlotte don't carry this opinion that Raleigh is a lesser place than the QC. Both cities have positives and negatives when you line them up. Honestly, I'm jealous of many of the adaptive reuse projects that Raleigh has been able to pull off. Kane has done some awesome things for the city of Raleigh. The Dillon is one of the best projects in the southeast IMO. You also have UNC, NC State and Duke rated as some of top universities in the country. At the same time Charlotte has as bustling hub airport along with a number of Fortune 500 companies that call it home. Bottom line is that both regions are growing and are huge economic engines for the Carolinas that compliment each other. Outside of Texas, few states could be as fortunate for what our two regions provide economically. We all should appreciate what we have and just sit back and watch us all kick some ass! ;-)
  12. Charlotte will host the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Spectrum Center in 2024 per announcement from the NCAA. Good to see it return back to the QC. Always a great week when March Madness is in town. Also, Greensboro will have the same 1st and 2nd rounds in 2023, Raleigh in 2025 and Greenville, SC in 2026. Great to see the Carolinas involved year after year. Not easy to navigate but here's the source: https://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/article/2020-10-14/future-ncaa-host-site-selections-through-2026
  13. Similar to what others have suggested, but with a few twists: NoDa - Hop Drop n Roll Legion - Juicy Jay Wooden Robot - Good Morning Vietnam Triple C - Up All Night Porter OMB - Copper or Captain Jack Heist - Citraquencial BTW - JRNYP2C you're the first person I've ever seen recommend 'just about anything from' Legal Remedy. Lol. Their food is always awesome though. EDIT: If you're going to include Fort Mill/Rock Hill, definitely get something from Amor Artis. Fort Millsner, Cruisin Down the Street, Sospresso Coffee blonde are all good choices. They do good sours as well if your friend is into that.
  14. Without knowing all the details of what was proposed by NextEra, I have a hard time believing this deal would ever get regulatory approval. A deal this size would be a huge negative for customers imo -- for starters Duke has something like 7.5+ million customers in a half dozen or so states. The utility industry is also highly regulated. I wonder if NextEra was just testing the waters knowing they were aiming too high to see if someone else out there was ripe for acquisition once they caught wind of this news. Kind of like when you are negotiating a salary. You throw out something high to see what comes back.
  15. Terminal Lobby Expansion progress pics from CLT Airport Twitter
  16. Thank god. It should be a gold mine for State Troopers and CMPD. This and 77. The speeding and reckless driving has gotten completely out of control.
  17. Agreed. They hit it out the park from the outset. And do everything well. I'm not a big sour guy but they make a fantastic peach sour. York County BA Stout is great too.
  18. I'd take that poster's comment with a grain of salt. Especially if you look at his/her history. Plus, you want locals to support your team. Not dependent on an influx of out towners that only come to see their team play. Eventually, good players would never want to sign there. How many players are dying to play for the Marlins in South Beach? Not many. To the point the USA Today columnist, if you have a group with a viable plan for a stadium and team in place, then that would certainly move you to the top of the list in any expansion/relocation conversation. Last I checked, Charlotte doesn't have that yet we still get put into this MLB expansion conversation every time.
  19. Panthers and BofA Stadium weren't messing around when they said they wanted to model their Labor Day weekend CFB kickoff game after Atlanta's. They hauled in two big fish for 2021. Awesome!
  20. Rolling Stones are the latest concert announcement for Bank of America Stadium. Show is on July 1st. https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article240033968.html
  21. MLS isn't going to put a team in Raleigh at this point with Charlotte coming on board.
  22. If only I could downvote this post.. (ducks)
