The Pearl looks pretty cool. I will have to go check it out. That building has housed various bars for more than 50 years, by the way, going back at least to the 1950s. So, it is great to see it maintain the same use now but with an upgraded look.

The Art Bar, by the way, was on King Street and not 5 Points, but was basically run off by the bank across the street.

This weekend we learned of an initiative to install "Historic Springfield" flags on the lightpoles of Main Street between 1st and 4th streets and along 8th Street. Here are more details on the project:

"SRG Homes & Neighborhoods and Chris Farley have investigated the cost to design and install Historic Springfield flags on the new architectural light poles from 1st-4th on Main and the west side of 8th St. Preliminary estimates range from $75-$100 per flag or a total cost of $7,500-$10,000. Craig Van Horn has been notified about this project and is on board. SRG Homes has hired a designer and has direct communication with the city official in charge of the sign process."

job corps debate rages on...

The City has not lived up to its promise to find River Region Human Services a suitable location for their business. So River Region is once again turning its attention to the Job Corps/Jewish Community Center building at the head of Klutho Park in Springfield. As of October 25th River Regions has not withdrawn their application for the building.

In response, SPAR Council is holding a rally in front of the Jewish Center/Job Corps building at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 27. All residents and concerned individuals are encouraged to attend. Letter writing and phone call campaigns are also planned.

River Region can and most likely will get the building, however it is not zoned for what they are proposing. Springfield can't really do anything to prevent them from getting the building from the Fed's, but they do need to keep pressuring Peyton and the city council to prevent River Region from changing the zoning. On a side note, I vaguely remember the representative of the GSA saying that organizations such as River Region get first chance at excess gov't property, which I found pretty odd. I would think that the taxpayers would rather have the highest bidder get the property since their money paid for the building and they would like to recoup some of their funds back. But what do I know.

Please come out and support Springfield tonight. Brings your friends and tell everyone you know to show up at Klutho Park at 7:00.

Contact SPAR for directions:

Here is a note from Brenda Boydston of the SPAR Council:

"The mayor, Zoning Dept, Historic Preservation Planner and Pat Lockett-Felder have been asked to address the community at the rally tonight on River Region Human Services' plans concerning their application to acquire the former Job Corps building.

River Region has not submitted a withdrawal letter to the government agency responsible for disposition of government property. Without that withdrawal letter, the government is required to continue in awarding River Region this property - which Springfield has been assured by city officials would not happen. Please come and bring your entire families to show our city the revitalized residential community we have and intend to maintain!"

On another note:

The 32206 zipcode (Springfield and surrounding area) has within it:

4 homeless shelters

10 halfway houses

3 HIV/AIDS facilities

7 drug abuse facilities

Springfield doesn't need another one.

Over one hundred Springfield residents gathered for a rally in front of the old Job Corps building last night. For many in attendance the goal was simple, squeeze the city for information regarding an alternate site for the River Regions (RR) treatment facility.

Since the neither the Mayor, nor any member of his staff, attended the rally last night Springfield is taking the rally to the City Hall today at noon.

renovations at 7th and main

All last week including the weekend we noticed demo work being done on the building at 1648 Main. Apparently a young couple bought the building and plan lease retail space once they have completed renovations. We hear that the buyers have not yet decided if they will convert the space into one large retail building or subdivide it into smaller units. We do not know of any potential reatilers at this time and work is expected to last about two months.

Battle over Job Corps building not over yet

It is looking more and more like River Region Human Services will get its hands on the old Job Corps building in Springfield. It also is apparent the City of Jacksonville is sticking to its guns in its refusal to ever allow River Region to use the building as an adult drug rehabilitation facility.

Here's the rest...

All of us in Springfield have been sick over this for the past seven months. There's a pretty good discussion going in the Historic Jewish Center forum at sparcouncil.org. This issue would be a non-issue if certain parties acted more responsibly. GrimlyFiendish's rant is fairly succinct in its presentation.

And, Lakelander, if you happen to hit the sparcouncil.org forums, will you check your PM?
