Tickets for DISNEY'S THE LION KING at The Landmark Theatre have not yet gone on sale, The huge musical opens February 15th and will play its final Richmond performance on Sunday, March 11th.

Richmond's Landmark, with 3,600 seats, is one of the largest theatres on the show's itinerary.

WICKED (which is returning to Richmond for a 2-week run in October) raked in over $5,000,000 during its 3-week engagement at the Landmark in March of 2010. It's likely THE LION KING will gross about $6,000.000 during its 4-week visit to Richmond.

Bernadette Peters has a committment that will prevent her participation in Richmond CenterStage's celebration of its 2nd birthday. Her replacement, to the pleasure of many, will be Patti LaBelle.

The gala event on Saturday night, September 10th at 7PM will include the concert with Ms LaBelle and The Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and for an extra fee, dinner, drinks and dancing will follow in a large tent on Broad between 6th and 7th Streets.

Tickets, for the concert only, range from $48 to $125. A package, including the post-show dinner and dancing under the adjacent big top, are selling for $250 per person.

All tickets previously sold for Bernadette Peters will be honored, although it is not possible to inform all purchasers. For instance, I have friends who walked up to the box office weeks ago and used credit cards to pay for the Peters aappearance. They don't read the local press, and there is no way the box office can advise them of the change.

They were not displeased to learn of the headliner switch. :)

This is a music review of The Richmond Symphony, but I'm posting it because of the extraordinary photograph of the proscenium arch at The Carpenter Theatre where the symphony, ballet and opera perform.

Before massive renovations, the theatre was a Loew's movie palace designed by theatre architect John Eberson.

Click the picture to enlarge.

Richmond Center Stage is putting The Gottwald Playhouse to an exciting new use -- 1st class cabaret such as you might see and hear at The Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel and similar venues across the country.

KT SULLIVAN will bring her repertoire of novelty and show songs to the intimate Gottwald Playhouse on the second level of the old Thalhimer building adjacent to The Carpenter Theatre for four performances on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (matinee) October 13, 14, 15 and 16.

The lady lives in my building here in NYCity and we frequently chat when meeting on the elevator.

The room will be set up with tables and I assume drinks will be sold.

She's a great entertainer, folks. Catch her if you can. :good:

Another cabaret will appear in November. More on that later.

Last year when WICKED played a three-week run at Richmond's Landmark Theatre it filled almost all of the theatre's 3,600 seats and grossed just short of $5 million during its 24-performance run.

It's back for another two weeks and once again is packing the Landmark, Richmond CenterStage's largest theatre.

Liz Jewett who, in my opinion, is one of the top reviewers in the city's press corp, tries her best to find fault with the production and ultimately gives in to lavish praise.

Some friends of mine saw yesterday's matinee and whiled away some time on a Monroe Park bench before entering the theatre. They speak of a mother with three young girls in tow and all of them were shod in bright red slippers, ready to click their heels.

A reminder:

Richmond CenterStage begins its Cabaret Series next week with KT Sullivan. She will be appearing in The Gottwald Playhouse which will be set up in a club-like style.

KT's performances will be at 7PM Thursday, Friday & Saturday (October 13, 14 & 15) and at 3PM on Sunday October 16th.

I've seen Sullivan entertain several times here in New York, and she is terrific. What a wonderful way to cap off a day at The Richmond Folk Festival or after a matinee of WICKED at The Landmark Theatre.

Other cabaret performers will be appearing later in the season at Rhythm Hall, directly under The Gottwald.

There's lots going on downtown this weekend: The Richmond Folk Festival; WICKED still playing at The Landmark; The Richmond Symphony in the Carpenter Theatre; The Richmond Ballet in association with the Folk Festival offers free admission to performances at their theatre at 5th and Canal Streets, and KT SULLIVAN's cabaret act in The Gottwald Theatre at Richmond CenterStage.

KT lives in my building up here in NYCity and I've seen her perform in The Oak Room at The Algonquin Hotel several times.

She opened last night in Richmond and has three more performances between today and Sunday. (7PM Friday and Saturday and 3PM Sunday.)

Don't miss her. She's great. And definately not the kind of sophisticated entertainment one sees regularly in Richmond.

The Carpenter Theatre had three sell-outs this week. Comedian Louis C.K. played to 1,800+ Thursday night and Virginia Opera's AIDA sold out its 2-performance run.

Meanwhile, last Sunday, WICKED closed out its 2nd week at The Landmark Theatre and grossed $1,379,422. The take for both weeks at The Landmark totaled $2,797,985.

Richmond CenterStage has announced its Broadway shows for the 2012-2013 season. The five shows, all musicals, are:

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS

BILLY ELLIOT

MARY POPPINS

LES MISERABLES

THE WEST SIDE STORY

Unlike this season, none of them will be in town for more than one week. And while venues for each show have not been announced, it's likely they will all play at The Landmark Theatre.
