Charlotte Photo of the Day

@JacksonHLook at my comments under Learning from other Places (page 9)  about San Antonio and I am talking about current growth.  The amount of construction intown within a 3 mile radius of Trade and Tryon is much greater than most cities including that of San Antonio.  Maybe not Austin but certainly most of our peer cities.  Our intown development right now is phenomenal and is captured by me and many others on this site in photos daily.  The corridors of Stonewall St, South Tryon into SouthEnd, South Blvd,  N Brevard, Central Ave in P-M etc are just full of construction as  you know.   When the new Frost Tower opens in SA next year it will be the first office tower built in downtown SA since 1989 compare that to Charlotte where a office tower opens almost every year or two.  That being said I love San Antonio but I love Charlotte more.

My bad.  I was very sleep deprived yesterday; probably should refrain from posting when I feel that way because my brain doesn't function properly.  So glad it's sleep-in Saturday -- TGIS.    I do really appreciate the photos you post here.

San Antonio does have a very established feel to it, and lots of character from being established as a major city longer. That city has done a great job with it’s identity. With that being said, there is def more development in central Charlotte- but that could never take away from what San Antonio already has. Charlotte has definetely improved on building towards an identity.

After being on the rail trail today I’ve realized it’s no River Walk but many people enjoy it and many from UNCC take the Light Rail to it.

Sorry to double post but a view pictures from around Noon today, First Ward park is pretty popular on a day like today, Suprised to see so many people this far from center city. Shows you how urbanized the rest of Uptown is compared to Levine Land.

Big Pinky. I remember when the Arlington was in the planning stages. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t this building supposed to be clad with blue glass? I don’t know why that sticks out in my memory.

Beautiful picture but I absolutely hate the Ballpark Angle. We need more development on this side of town.

That's correct and the original plan also called for the building to be 42 stories, but Dilworth NIMBYs fought hard against it.

I agree but I do like the layered affect you get from this angle.  Those parking lots are such an eyesore. Gateway can't come soon enough.

There are cities around the country that would love to have Wachovia, I know Wells Fargo, campus buildings as  the centerpiece's of their skylines.

Yes the Riverwalk is nice and has been replicated in OKC.  I was in OKC a few weeks ago and strolled around Bricktown I must admit it is well done although i don't like the riverwalk rip off.  I wish Charlotte could solidify some kind of stroll district and incoporate it with history.  I know the "Gold District" is around but is there anyway to safely open a mineshaft for tours.  Or build an "Old Mecklanburg square" complete with a replica of the tavern GW visited along with other pioneer buildings near the First Ward park or something.  I mean OKC ripped off SA riverwalk so I see no reason why Charlotte can't facilitate purpose built attractions uptown.   Also instead of a ferris wheel how about a huge old world carousel with german style buildings around it.  Yes I have thought about this many many times.  I travel a lot and I see the investment in the tourist/entertainment  industry in peer and next tier cities.  NC cities need to take heed and do some planning.  Charlotte can do whateer it wants because there is so much real estate available in uptown. IMO, Charlotte should be touting itself as the city of the future since a lot of the history was lost or neglected.

^regarding a "stroll district"....I think Charlotte has a few in various stages of development and maturation....the rail trail in South End, and Sugar Creek in Midtown.

Random shots of the city today and I thought of a new slogan :  Charlotte the Most Wired City!   That uptown stunner the Ascent is really growing on me.

I really wish they would put panels on the garage where the concrete is unpainted and where there are no plants.  It looks unfinished.  Otherwise, I agree with you...it turned out better than I anticipated.

^^^ I was just looking at the Catalyst and the Element apartment towers and this Ascent tower is so much better looking than those.  Like you  those plants need to get growing to soften the garage bottom third of the building.

I think Ascent looks better now, but I think the other two will age better - assuming they're not incredibly cheaply made.

I prefer the look of Element, the ground level of Catalyst and the height & parking deck of ascent. Catalyst has by far the best retail imo. Mellow mushroom and especially 7-11 are needed and refreshing beyond the Ink & Ivy’s and Chima’s Of uptown

I like those laid back, everyday places, too. I've had lots of nice conversations with employees of Mellow Mushroom & 7-11 while hanging out in the park.

I love "going out", but don't have the opportunity as much as I do to just hang out enjoy a nice chill afternoon.
