Even though I've been a UP member for ahile, I'm curious as to what many of the acronyms used on UP forums and many other forums for that fact stand for. Answers would not only satisfy my curiousity. It would help any newbies learn the UP lingo.

Examples would be:

BTW

LOL

....and so forth.

i know i've seen a webpage with a list of them... but here goes.

LOL - laughing out loud

BTW - by the way

FWIW - for what it's worth

IANAL - i am not a lawyer

ROTFL - rolling on the floor laughing

STFU - shut the f*** up

OMG - oh my god

YMMV - your mileage may vary

IMO - in my opinion

IMHO - in my humble opinion

BRB - be right back

TTYL - talk to you later

that's all i can think of off the top of my head, but that should be a good start for you.

A few Professional Acronyms often seen on UP:

AICP - American Institute of Certified Planners

MPO - Metropolitan Planning Organization

TIP - Transportation Improvement Program

ITE - Institute of Transportation Engineers

DBOM - Design, Build, Operate, Maintain agreement

FFGA - Full-Funding Grant Agreement

LRT - Light Rail Transit

HRT - Heavy Rail Transit

BRT - Bus Rapid Transit

TOD - Transit-Oriented Development

DOT - Department of Transportation (often preceded with a state initial or US)

FHWA - Federal Highway Administration

FTA - Federal Transit Administration

AA - Alternatives Analysis (for Federal transit projects)

EIS - Environmental Impact Statement (preceded with D for draft or F for final)

ITS - Intelligent Transportation Systems

TDM - Transportation Demand Management

TSM - Transportation Systems Management

BPM - Best Practice Model (usually developed for an MPO)

GIS - Geographic Information System

DOI - Digital Orthophotographic Imagery

LULC - Land Use/Land Cover

LULU - Locally Unwanted Land Use
